Book excerpt: This book is great story telling by Major Ralph Stoney Bates Sr., USMC (Ret), an accomplished and respected Marine, instructor on military and naval subjects at Furman University's Life-Long Learning Program (OLLI), and a previously published contributing author and editor of "Short Rations For Marines." It is, in a word-lively! It's not at all boring or dull reading; rather it brings history alive. It immediately sparks your interest, and paints a vivid word picture describing the Marine Corps in a manner that most people have never been so accustomed. The reader will simply want more, and will get it. It tells the story of who the Marines are and how they became what they are today. It explains in unique and simple detail why and how John Archer Lejeune (pronounced luh jern), became "A Marine Called Gabe," charted the course for the Marine Corps to follow into the future, and once that course was set, literally fashioned the Marine Corps that fought across the vast Pacific in World War II, and in every following war and skirmish-right up to today. This is the Marine Corps that often deploys on massive humanitarian and rescue missions on a world-wide scale. This is the Marine Corps that possess the will, character, and capability to project military and naval power anywhere, at any time, and always accomplishes its mission. This is a Marine Corps envisioned by its architect John Archer Lejeune. At the conclusion of the book, "A Marine Called Gabe," there will be no doubt that John Archer Lejeune is "the greatest leatherneck of them all." During his life, especially his developing life leading toward the Naval Academy and active duty time as a Marine, John Archer Lejeune developed abilities and traits that allowed him to redirect his Marine Corps into the proud, professional, proficient organization that would possess the skill, ability and the mettle to strike adversaries from the land, sea and air. It is very likely that, had John Archer Lejeune not arrived at the helm of the Marine Corps at that particular critical time in our history, the War in the Pacific would have had a totally different outcome and the Marines would be vastly different today-if in existence at all. This book is an eye-opener. Up until this time, only two books have been written about Lieutenant General John Archer Lejeune, USMC (Ret): "Reminiscences of a Marine," by John Archer Lejeune, and "Lejeune: A Marine's Life," by Merrill L. Bartlett. Both excellent, informative, and factually oriented. This book is the third. It is a novel containing a myriad of facts, surrounded by studied opinions based on those facts, and (here's the good part) pure Marine Corps logic and conjecture. The author, Ralph Bates, a 26 year active duty Marine, along with his research assistant (wife) Lyn, have traveled to dozens of locations, interviewed dozens of people at each, read public and private documents, books, articles, letters and notes, to uncover a treasure trove of information about Lieutenant General John Archer Lejeune and those who knew him. Without question, he indeed, quietly, steadily and without fanfare, guided the United States Marine Corps to be what it is today. This novel should find its way toward the Marine Corps Reading List for all Marines, and Fleet Marine Force sailors, plus historians, military historians and cadets at Virginia Military Institute and midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy to enhance their knowledge and appreciation of "the greatest leatherneck of them all," Lieutenant General John Archer Lejeune, United States Marine Corps (Retired), "Mister Semper Fi."

Book excerpt: A bracing amalgamation of devastating humor and brilliant cultural observation, in which Gabe Hudson fearlessly explores the darker implications of American military power. "Weird, wonderful, and worrisome.” —The Washington Post Book World “Dear Mr. President is a war book like no other. It’s as if Salvador Dali had rewritten All Quiet on the Western Front.” —USA Today Everybody’s Gulf War Syndrome is a little bit different. Or so believes Larry, who returns home from Desert Storm to find his hair gone and his bones rapidly disintegrating. Then there’s Lance Corporal James Laverne of the US Marines, who grows a third ear in Kuwait. And in the audaciously comic novella “Notes from a Bunker Along Highway 8,” a Green Beret deserts his team after seeing a vision of George Washington, only to find a new calling—administering aid to wounded Iraqi civilians; he’s hindered only by the furtive nature of his mission and an unruly band of chimpanzees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book Marine Wife, Lyn is the simple, yet uniquely different story of one Marine wife, Linda “Lyn” Gale Bates, the wife of and lifelong partner to a United States Marine. During her lifetime, she loved and honored the Corps of Marines as much, if not more intently-focused than many Marines and Marine wives have in the past, present, and perhaps the future. Her husband, too, loved his Corps, but it was she who most often unnoticeably accomplished a myriad of tasks and initiated numerous actions simply because of her unique abilities, insight, and desire to focus on the Corps and those who served it. From the time she first set foot on a Marine Corps installation (Parris Island) until the day she died, her love and admiration for the Marine Corps and its spirit never faltered. In her life as a Marine wife, she never allowed what she did or why she initiated these various acts of kindness to draw attention to herself or to garner praise from others. About the Author This book was written by Major Ralph Stoney Bates, USMC (Ret) about his wife, Lyn, who died on 12 September 2022 after a long battle against cancer. They were married for sixty-three years while he served in the Marines as enlisted, warrant, and commissioned officer for twenty-six years, and after retiring from the Corps, was a deputy sheriff in two sheriff’s agencies. Bates recently became an author, only because of the assistance and encouragement from his Marine Wife. She assisted him in writing and publishing several books about the Marines, including two anthologies, a historical novel about John Archer Lejeune, and a book with a setting in Guam during and after World War II, several articles published in both Leatherneck, and Marine Corps Gazette, plus numerous local newspaper opinions over the span of the last forty or so years.

Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of Heroes Proved, a moving and inspirational chronicle of our national heroes’ sacrifices and triumphs in Iraq and Afghanistan, after their return to the homefront. Combat-decorated Marine Oliver North delivers a riveting firsthand account of the extraordinary young American volunteers—the best and bravest of their generation—who stepped forward to defend us from radical Islamic terror. For more than a dozen years North and his award-winning documentary team from FOX News Channel’s War Stories have traveled to the frontlines of the War on Terror to profile the dedicated men and women who serve our nation in harm’s way and chronicle what it truly means to be a hero. This time, he follows them from the battlefield to the homefront and finds extraordinary inspiration in their triumph over life-altering adversity. In this new volume of his New York Times bestselling American Heroes series, North describes in vivid detail the breathtaking courage, steadfast commitment, and resilient strength of those who serve—and those who love them. The term “selfless devotion” may be a cliché to many in our modern culture—but not to the men and women on the pages of this book. Their stories resound with bravery, a warrior ethos, and spiritual strength that ought to encourage us all. Heroes are people who knowingly place themselves at risk for the benefit of others. They give of themselves, literally and physically. Since the terror attack of 9-11- 01, more than 2 million young Americans have volunteered to serve in difficult and dangerous places. No military force in history has been asked to do more than those who have served and sacrificed in this long fight. They are American heroes. So too are their loved ones here at home. These are their stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Arthur Simon’s The Greatest of All Leathernecks is the first comprehensive biography of John Archer Lejeune (1867–1942), a Louisiana native and the most innovative and influential leader of the United States Marine Corps in the twentieth century. As commandant of the Marine Corps from 1920 to 1929, Lejeune reorganized, revitalized, and modernized the force by developing its new and permanent mission of amphibious assault. Before that transformation, the corps was a constabulary infantry force used mainly to protect American business interests in the Caribbean, a mission that did not place it as a significant contributor to the United States defense establishment. The son of a plantation owner from Pointe Coupee Parish, Lejeune enrolled at Louisiana State University in 1881, aged fourteen. Three years later, he entered the U.S. Naval Academy, afterward serving for two years at sea as a midshipman. In 1890, he transferred to the Marines, where he ascended quickly in rank. During the Spanish-American War, Lejeune commanded and landed Marines at San Juan, Puerto Rico, to rescue American sympathizers who had been attacked by Spanish troops. A few years later, he arrived with a battalion of Marines at the Isthmus of Panama—part of Colombia at the time—securing it for Panama and making possible the construction of the Panama Canal by the United States. He went on to lead Marine expeditions to Cuba and Veracruz, Mexico. During World War I, Lejeune was promoted to major general and given command of an entire U.S. Army division. After the war, Lejeune became commandant of the Marine Corps, a role he used to develop its new mission of amphibious assault, transforming the corps from an ancillary component of the U.S. military into a vibrant and essential branch. He also created the Marine Corps Reserve, oversaw the corps’s initial use of aviation, and founded the Marine Corps Schools, the intellectual planning center of the corps that currently exists as the Marine Corps University. As Simon masterfully illustrates, the mission and value of the corps today spring largely from the efforts and vision of Lejeune.

Book excerpt: Grant Newton, born 1984, is from Maumee, Ohio (just outside of Toledo) and a 2009 graduate from Ohio University with a B.A. in Creative Writing. During his final years there, he began to get serious about writing short stories and poems about his experiences in and around Athens. For instance, he saw the value in playing poker all night with the locals, driving and exploring the surrounding areas, and the element of frontier and lawlessness in the town. It was difficult to focus the attention he desired on his short stories (although hed compiled pages of ideas) and, after talking with a few distinguished English professors, decided instead to write a full-length novel. It was a challenge to balance it with the pursuit of a degree, but in October of 2009 he completed a fictional adventure book entitled In The Sights. With its release, he hoped to fund other projects such as an intricate short story collection (with the many references from his novel included) and multiple film projects. In February of 2011, he comprised these short works and poetry into one body: Once Abandoned. It can be read simultaneously with In The Sights or on its own, but is sure to captivate readers both young and old alike.

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Maybe He Just Likes You and Halfway Normal comes a “compassionate…touching” (Donna Gephart, award-winning author of The Paris Project) and powerful story of learning how to grow, change, and survive. When twelve-year-old Zinnia Manning’s older brother Gabriel is diagnosed with a mental illness, the family’s world is turned upside down. Mom and Dad want Zinny, her sixteen-year-old sister, Scarlett, and her eight-year-old brother, Aiden, to keep Gabriel’s condition “private”—and to Zinny that sounds the same as “secret.” Which means she can’t talk about it with her two best friends, who don’t understand why Zinny keeps pushing them away, turning everything into a joke. It also means she can’t talk about it during Lunch Club, a group run by the school guidance counselor. How did Zinny get stuck in this weird club, anyway? She certainly doesn’t have anything in common with these kids—and even if she did, she’d never betray her family’s secret. The only good thing about school is science class, where cool teacher Ms. Molina has them doing experiments on crayfish. And when Zinny has the chance to attend a dream marine biology camp for the summer, she doesn’t know what to do. How can Zinny move forward when Gabriel—and, really, her whole family—still needs her help?

Book excerpt: When Thea Wyndham and Mitchell Baker learn they've been named joint guardians for their late friends' three children, they're little more than acquaintances. Barely polite acquaintances, at that. Something about Mitch's forthright intensity has always left ad exec Thea feeling off-balance, while Mitch makes no secret of his disdain when Thea offers him financial assistance if he'll take sole guardianship. Thea is far from heartless. She's just plain terrified of her new parenting responsibilities. Both she and Mitch are romantically involved with other people. Yet the more time they spend together, the less certain she is of her loyalties. There are complications and missteps, tears and laughter--lots of it. And somehow, through it all, the dawning realization that the last place she thought she'd find herself could be just where she belongs. . . Praise for Jo Goodman's Marry Me "Fans of historical and western romance will appreciate Goodman's witty dialogue, first-rate narrative prose and clever plotting." –Publishers Weekly (starred review) "An insightful, gently sensual love story." –Library Journal
