Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Chikaranga Language: With Grammar, Exercises, Useful Conversational Sentences and Vocabulary (English-Chikaranga and Chikaranga-English) In the following pages an attempt has been made to provide for the European student a gradual introduction to the grammar of this important branch of the group of African Native languages, known as the Bantu family. As the sentence in the Bantu language is built upon the noun as foundation, the different noun-classes are treated first, and the student is advised to become thoroughly acquainted with the classes before proceeding further. From the Noun we pass on to the Grammatical Concord, which is an underlying principle of all Bantu languages. According to this principle all the words in the sentence that stand in connection with the noun are thrown into concord with it by the same, or a similar prefix or particle. From this point the student is gradually led on from simpler construction to the more difficult and complex forms.
