Book Synopsis Surgery: An Unfamiliar History by : Nigel Keith Maybury
Download or read book Surgery: An Unfamiliar History written by Nigel Keith Maybury and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a fascinating account of surgery that throws light on forgotten and unknown aspects of its practice from antiquity to the present. It illuminates the rare periods of progress and also explains why there were lengthy times when no original operations were undertaken. Maybury has achieved this by identifying the time and place when each operation was first undertaken. The first of these was the trephination of the skull in Peru twelve thousand years ago, presumably to exorcise evil spirits. This operation over several thousand years reached Europe where Hippocrates described and rationalised it to treat head injuries, it is still practiced today and is the forerunner of each subsequent original operation. The golden ages of surgery took place in Ancient Greece and India and 1,300 years later in Western Europe and the USA. Between these periods, no original operations took place. Maybury explains why this happened and reveals the Greek theory that dominated surgery for over 2,000 years. He describes the passage and translation of the Greek manuscripts and their acceptance in the Arabian Empires and how in turn the Arabic versions strongly influenced Italy and then Western Europe. He also tells of the Edict of Tours of 1163 that devastated surgery and took 700 years to rectify and also the extraordinary modern era when all the tissues of the body were finally operated upon and very much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book established itself in its first edition as the definitive 'one-stop-shop' revision aid; the only one available to encompass all elements of the MRCOG Part 2 examination in a single volume. Now incorporating practice EMQs as well as the standard question types, this second edition will ensure that it retains its place on the 'must-have' list for every candidate preparing for this exam. Concentrating on testing the candidate's theoretical and practical knowledge as recommended in the current MRCOG syllabus, the book tests the trainee with questions in obstetrics and gynaecology and those aspects of medicine, surgery and paediatrics relevant to the practice of both. The book is divided into four key parts, one for each style of question, each of which opens with an introductory section on how to approach the exam and, crucially, how to fail it. # Part 1 provides a series of short answer practice papers. Common mistakes are highlighted as well as a list of key points required to get full marks. A sample answer is given for each question # Part 2 contains a mock paper for the MCQ part of the exam, containing 225 questions with answers and helpful annotations # Part 3 introduces the EMQ, giving the reader 40 questions in the style of the examination, together with answers and explanatory notes # Part 4 is devoted to the OSCE, with descriptions of 20 sample stations assessing different aspects of clinical practice, advice on how to tackle these, and suggested marking schemes. Throughout, questions have been designed to test factual knowledge and understanding, problem-solving ability, and clinical and communication skills.
