Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liverwort and Hornwort Flora of Sikkim, presented in two volumes, is the first such comprehensive treatise for any Indian state. It presents detailed taxonomic account of 378 species and infraspecific taxa belonging to 96 genera and 51 families of phyla Marchantiophyta and Anthocerotophyta, which accounts for nearly 41 per cent of total Indian liverworts and hornworts documented so far in just 0.22 per cent of its total geographical area. It includes the description of four species of liverworts as new to science and one as new distributional record for the country, besides several range extensions to the Indian Himalayan region or Sikkim and a number of nomenclatural changes. The study is supported by immaculately drawn 352 camera lucida illustrations, 150 coloured and black & white photographs showing ultrastructure of leaf surface, spores and elaters under SEM, the oil-bodies, field photographs of selected taxa, and critical taxonomic notes. It is hoped that the book would serve as identification manual of the Himalayan liverworts and the hornworts and hence useful to not only the students of bryology, but also the foresters, naturalists and the people at large.--Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The burgeoning demand on the world food supply, coupled with concern over the use of chemical fertilizers, has led to an accelerated interest in the practice of precision agriculture. This practice involves the careful control and monitoring of plant nutrition to maximize the rate of growth and yield of crops, as well as their nutritional value.
Book Synopsis Biodiversity of the Himalaya: Jammu and Kashmir State by : Ghulam Hassan Dar
Download or read book Biodiversity of the Himalaya: Jammu and Kashmir State written by Ghulam Hassan Dar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 1100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Himalaya, a global biodiversity hotspot, sustains about one-fifth of the humankind. Nestled within the north-western mountain ranges of the Himalaya, the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) State harbours more than half of the biodiversity found in the Indian Himalaya. The wide expanse of State, spread across the subtropical Jammu, through the temperate Kashmir valley, to the cold arid Ladakh, is typical representative of the extensive elevational and topographical diversity encountered in the entire Himalaya. This book, the most comprehensive and updated synthesis ever made available on biodiversity of the J&K State, is a valuable addition to the biodiversity literature with global and regional relevance. The book, arranged into 7 parts, comprises of 42 chapters contributed by 87 researchers, each of whom is an expert in his/her own field of research. The precious baseline data contained in the book would form the foundation for assessing current status of knowledge about the bioresources, identify the knowledge gaps, and help prioritization of conservation strategies to steer the sustainable use of biodiversity in this Himalayan region. Given the breadth of topics covered under the banner of biodiversity in this book, it can surely serve as a model for documentation of biodiversity in other regions of the world. The book will be of immense value to all those who, directly or indirectly, have to deal with biodiversity, including students, teachers, researchers, naturalists, environmentalists, resource managers, planners, government agencies, NGOs and the general public at large.

Book Synopsis Chemical Constituents of Bryophytes by : Yoshinori Asakawa
Download or read book Chemical Constituents of Bryophytes written by Yoshinori Asakawa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some 50 years, Professor Asakawa and his group have focused their research on the chemical constituents of bryophytes and have found that these plants contain large numbers of secondary metabolites, such as terpenoids, acetogenins, and aromatic compounds representative of many new skeletons, which exhibit interesting biological activities. Individual terpenoids, when found as constituents of both a bryophyte and a higher plant, tend to occur in different enantiomeric forms. Professor Asakawa has covered the literature on bryophytes in two earlier volumes of Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Products, namely, Volumes 42 (1982) and 65 (1995). Since the publication of the latter volume, a great deal of new information has appeared on bryophytes. One example is that known sex pheromones of algae have been discovered in two liverworts, indicating that some members of the latter taxonomic group might originate from brown algae. From information provided in this volume, it is suggested that two orders of the Marchantiophyta should be combined.
Book Synopsis Biotechnology of Anti-diabetic Medicinal Plants by : Saikat Gantait
Download or read book Biotechnology of Anti-diabetic Medicinal Plants written by Saikat Gantait and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-13 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a unique overview of insights on the genetic basis of anti-diabetic activity, chemistry, physiology, biotechnology, mode-of-action, as well as cellular mechanisms of anti-diabetic secondary metabolites from medicinal plants. The World Health Organization estimated that 80% of the populations of developing countries rely on traditional medicines, mostly plant drugs, for their primary health care needs. There is an increasing demand for medicinal plants having anti-diabetic potential in both developing and developed countries. The expanding trade in medicinal plants has serious implications on the survival of several plant species, with many under threat to become extinct. This book describes various approaches to conserve these genetic resources. It discusses the whole spectrum of biotechnological tools from micro-propagation for large-scale multiplication, cell-culture techniques to the biosynthesis and enhancement of pharmaceutical compounds in the plants. It also discusses the genetic transformation as well as short- to long-term conservation of plant genetic resources via synthetic seed production and cryopreservation, respectively. The book is enriched with expert contributions from across the globe. This reference book is useful for researchers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries, medicinal chemists, biochemists, botanists, molecular biologists, academicians, students as well as diabetic patients, traditional medicine practitioners, scientists in medicinal and aromatic plants, Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and other traditional medical practitioners.
