Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Chemistry, Vol. 2 of 2: Containing the Principal Facts of the Science, Arranged in the Order in Which They Are Discussed And; Illustrated in the Lectures at the Royal Institution of Great Britain When the tartrate of manganese and potassa is intensely heated in a wind-furnace it furnishes globules of metallic man ganese; and as this salt is easily Obtained in a state of purity, its decomposition is perhaps the simplest process for obtaining the pure metal, care being taken to exclude foreign substances derivable from the fuel or from the crucible. Manganese is a hard gray metal, exhaling a peculiar odour when handled or breathed upon it is brittle, and has a gra mular fracture; its specific gravity is When pure, it does not affect the magnetic needle. It is best preserved in naphtha; for in the air it soon crumbles down into a black powder, and undergoes the same Change in water, with the evolution of hydrogen gas. It may also be conveniently kept in a small glass tube hermetically sealed. Manganese and Oxygen. -there are four compounds of manganese and oxygen, three of which are oxides, and one an acid. Protoxide of Manganese is obtained by passing a current of hydrogen over the pure deutoxide or peroxide contained in a porcelain or iron tube, exposed to a heat gradually raised to bright redness: water is formed, and a dingy green powder remains in the tube, which is the protoxide. It may also be procured by mixing the peroxide with half its weight of muriate of ammonia, and projecting the mixture in successive portions into a red-hot crucible; the product is lixiviated, and the solution of chloride of manganese, thus obtained, is decomposed by the addition of carbonate of po tassa; the precipitate is collected, washed, dried, and exposed, out of the contact of air, to an intense heat; or it may be heated in a tube, through which a current of hydrogen is passed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Chemistry, Descriptive and Theoretical, Vol. 1 This Manual purposes, not only to satisfy a want felt, it is believed, by many teachers of Chemistry, but also to show how the employment of unitary formulae facilitates the generalisation of chemical truths. The views, of which it is an exponent, are based on those originally promulgated by Laurent and Gerhardt in France. They are now adopted by a large section of English chemists, particularly by Professors Williamson, Brodie, and Hofmann, whose researches have contributed greatly to their development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friendly Chemistry is a truly unique approach to teaching introductory chemistry. Used by home schoolers and charter, public and private school students world-wide for over ten years, Friendly Chemistry presents what is often considered an intimidating subject as a genuinely fun, enjoyable experience. Whether you're a high-school aged student needing a lab science course or a "non-traditional" student looking for a refresher course to help you prepare for an upcoming entrance exam, Friendly Chemistry can help you accomplish your goal in a "painless" way! If you do have aspirations of a future in a science field, Friendly Chemistry can give you the solid foundation you need to succeed in subsequent courses. Friendly Chemistry was written using simple language and a host of analogies to make learning (and teaching!) chemistry easy. The chemistry concepts presented in Friendly Chemistry are NOT watered-down. The concepts are just explained in ways that are readily understood by most learners. Coupled with these explanations is a host of teaching aids, labs and games which makes the learning concrete and multi-sensory. Students find the course fun and painless. Parents often comment, "I wish I had had this when I was taking chemistry. Now it all makes so much sense!" Friendly Chemistry covers the same topics taught in traditional high school chemistry courses. The course begins with an introduction to atomic theory followed by discussion of why the elements are arranged the way they are in the periodic table. Quantum mechanics comes next using the acclaimed "Doo-wop" Board as a teaching aid. Next comes a discussion of how atoms become charged (ionization), followed by an explanation of how charged atoms make compounds. The mole is introduced next, followed by a discussion of chemical reactions. Stoichiometry (predicting amounts of product produced from a reaction) is treated next followed by a discussion of solutions (molarity). The course is wrapped up with a discussion of the ideal gas laws. Please note that this is Volume 1 of the Teacher's Edition. Volume 2 of the Teacher's Edition, the Student Edition and the Manipulative Set must be purchased separately to have all necessary materials to complete this course. More information regarding Friendly Chemistry including answers to many frequently asked questions may be found at www.friendlychemistry.com.
