Book excerpt: Teen dating violence (TDV), the physical, sexual or psychological violence that occurs within the context of heterosexual or same-sex dating relationships, is a substantial public health problem in the United States. While the association of TDV victimization with adverse outcomes is documented in a number of cross-sectional studies, longitudinal work on this topic is limited. The present study examined the association of TDV with a broad range of adverse outcomes 5 years postvictimization, using the first three waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (n=5,681). Physical and psychological TDV victimization were assessed at Wave 2 when participants were in grades 8-12, and adverse outcomes were assessed approximately 5 years later (Wave 3), when participants were aged 18-27. Outcomes explored in this study included substance use (smoking, heavy episodic drinking, marijuana use and other drug use), sexual risk, depression, self-esteem, adult intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization, suicidal behaviors (attempts and ideation), antisocial behaviors and extreme weight control behaviors. Data were analyzed using multivariate linear and logistic regression models. Compared to participants reporting no TDV at Wave 2, participants reporting Wave 2 TDV victimization had increased rates of depression, other drug use, heavy episodic drinking, antisocial behaviors, suicidal ideation and IPV victimization at Wave 3, when controlling for race, age, socioeconomic status, child maltreatment, pubertal status and gender. We also considered results for the subset of victims experiencing psychological aggression only and for the subset of victims experiencing both physical and psychological aggression. In the psychological aggression subgroup, Wave 2 victimization was related to substance use, antisocial behaviors, suicidal ideation and IPV victimization at Wave 3, while in the subset of individuals experiencing both physical and psychological aggression at Wave 2, victimization was related to increased Wave 3 smoking, IPV victimization, suicidal ideation and depression. In gender-stratified analyses, we found that Wave 2 psychological victimization was related to Wave 3 marijuana use, antisocial behaviors, suicidal ideation and IPV victimization in males, while for females in this sub-group, Wave 2 victimization was only related to Wave 3 heavy episodic drinking and IPV victimization. For females experiencing both physical and psychological aggression at Wave 2, victimization was related to increased Wave 3 smoking, depression, suicidal ideation and IPV victimization; for males in this subgroup, Wave 2 victimization was only related to increased Wave 3 IPV victimization. The results from the present analyses suggest that TDV victimization during adolescence is related to adverse outcomes in both males and females 5 years after victimization. These findings also imply that certain outcomes may be more strongly related to certain sub-types of TDV, and that this relationship may differ by gender. Results are discussed in terms of directionality of adverse effects, and within the context of a stress and coping framework. Findings from this study can be used to improve secondary prevention programs offered to victims of TDV.

Stress and coping and social learning theories suggest that dating violence victimization may predict increased substance use and dating violence perpetration. However, few studies have assessed these relations over time, and existing studies have not assessed physical and psychological dating violence victimization separately nor focused on early adolescent populations. The current study addressed these gaps by examining longitudinal relations between physical and psychological dating violence victimization and substance use and physical and psychological dating violence perpetration among early adolescents. The extent to which gender and class norms for dating violence moderated these relations was also examined. Participants included two cohorts of sixth grade students who reported being involved in a dating relationship at Waves 1 and 2 (N = 2,022; 43% female; 52% African American, 21% Latino/a, 20% European American, and 7% other). Analyses utilized a multilevel approach whereby students were represented at Level 1 and classes (scores for students in the same cohort and school; n = 74) at Level 2. Models tested direct effects from Wave 1 psychological and physical victimization to Wave 2 outcomes and the extent to which gender moderated this effect. Models including psychological and physical perpetration also tested cross-level interactions between Level 1 dating violence victimization and Level 2 class norms for dating violence. Key findings indicated that gender moderated relations between physical and psychological victimization and psychological perpetration. High levels of psychological victimization predicted greater change in psychological perpetration for girls as compared to boys and high levels of physical victimization predicted greater change in psychological perpetration for boys as compared to girls. Additionally, physical and psychological victimization significantly predicted changes in substance use. High levels of physical victimization predicted greater change in substance use, whereas high levels of psychological victimization predicted less change in substance use. These findings highlight the need to address dating violence early in middle school, so as to prevent negative outcomes associated with victimization by a dating partner.

Book excerpt: Violence experienced in early and mid-adolescent romantic relationships (known as teen dating violence) is an important public health issue, and the three papers in this volume each address a different research question on this topic. Emerging research demonstrates that individuals who experience victimization in adolescence are more likely to be re-victimized in future relationships; however, past work on this topic is limited by potential confounding, and lack of assessment of potential mediators of this relationship. Thus, the first paper (Chapter Two) used data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to explore pathways to revictimization, adjusting for confounding using a high-dimension propensity score. Results indicated that dating violence experienced during adolescence was indirectly associated with intimate partner violence experienced 12 years later, through the experience of intimate partner violence at 5.5 year follow-up. These findings, as well as all empirical findings in the field, rest on the quality of measurement, and so the selection of a measure for a given research study is an important task. Currently, however, no comprehensive compendium exists that presents teen dating violence measures with evidence of reliability and validity and discusses strengths and limitations of these evidencebased measures. Thus, the second paper (Chapters Three and Four) presents a two-part comprehensive review of teen dating violence measures that have been the focus of psychometric testing. This review also summarizes empirical literature that uses identified measures. Due to the complex and nuanced nature of interpersonal interactions, psychological aggression is a particularly difficult construct to measure. Empirical data show that psychological aggression is common in teen dating relationships, but to more precisely answer questions about the impact of this aggression on healthy development, measures must be designed that capture psychological aggression that is purposeful, serious and perceived as harmful. The third and final paper in this volume (Chapter Five) reports on the initial adaptation of a measure of severe psychological aggression (the Measure of Psychologically Abusive Behaviors; Follingstad, 2011, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, 26(6)) for teen dating relationships. Together, these three papers advance understanding of teen dating violence and support its developmental and public health importance.

Results highlight the importance of victimization in predicting criminal behaviors in both adolescence and young adulthood. In addition, investigation into the moderating effects of demographic variables indicates that several of the relationships between victimization and criminal outcomes are contingent on gender, race and ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Additional analyses guided by General Strain Theory (GST) investigated the role of negative emotions which were expected to affect the relationship between victimization and criminal outcomes. Results demonstrate the negative impact of experiencing victimization by an adolescent romantic partner. Victimization was a significant predictor of all four outcomes in adolescence as well as in young adulthood. Although victimization was significant for males and females, several models indicate that dating victimization has a stronger effect for females, particularly during adolescence. Females had increased odds of involvement in criminal offending, heavy drinking, and illegal drug use in adolescence. For white respondents and those categorized in the high socioeconomic status, dating victimization had a strong effect on their increased odds of illegal drug use. Finally, negative emotions (anger, depression, and self-esteem) are found to play some role in the relationship between dating victimization and these criminal outcomes. However, future research should focus on more precise measurements to untangle how negative emotions impact these relationships.

Several studies have examined the association between TDV and health-related behaviors, and TDV and school outcomes separately. However, only one qualitative study explored the relationship among TDV victimization, health-related behaviors, and school outcomes. There is a need for more studies that examine TDV victimization, health-related behaviors, and school outcomes factors interrelate among high school youth. The purpose of this study is to explore risk factors of TDV, examine the moderating effect of gender or ethnicity on the relationship between TDV victimization and school outcomes, and explore the mediating effect of health-related behaviors on the relationship between TDV victimization and school outcomes. Data from the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) was used. The CDC collects data biennially on risk behaviors among high school youth across the U.S. using the YRBS. This study used multiple imputation to handle missing data. Bivariate analyses included correlations, T-tests, Chi-squares, and logistic regression in SPSS to explore the relationships between the variables. Process MACRO 3.3 was used to conduct moderation and mediation analyses. The sample was comprised of 14,765 high school students. Most participants were 16 to 18 years and older (61.9%). 51.4% of the sample were female; 91.4 % of participants reported that they engaged in at least one or more sexual risk behaviors. Seventy percent of the teens were -others (i.e., White, Multi-racial, Asian, Alaskan-Native, American Indian, and Hawaiian), 19.4% were Black/African-American, and 10.6 % were Hispanic. Thirty-seven percent of participants reported difficulty concentrating in school. Participants reported average grades of 3.39 with the majority of students reporting As (28.9%) and Bs (29.7%) and having substance use of 1.12 on a scale of zero (no substance use) to four (higher levels of substance use). Results indicated that being a younger, female, non-Hispanic, and involving in sexual risk behaviors were risk factors for TDV victimization. Second, neither gender nor ethnicity moderated the relationship between TDV victimization and school outcomes. Finally, physical activity and sleep were mediators of the relationship between TDV victimization and school outcomes. These findings indicate that health-related behaviors are at the center of TDV victimization and academic achievement. School-based TDV prevention programs should include content on the importance of physical activity and sleep in their curricula when addressing healthy relationships. This study calls for multidisciplinary collaborations to address this social problem.

Book excerpt: Intimate partner violence (IPV), defined as physical, sexual, emotional, and economic abuse and controlling behaviors inflicted within intimate partner relationships, is a global crisis that extends beyond national and sociocultural boundaries, affecting people of all ages, religions, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds. Though studies exist that seek to explain how people become trapped within violent relationships and what factors facilitate survival, escape and safety, this book provides fresh insights into this complex and multifaceted issue. People often ask of women in abusive relationships “why does she stay?” Critics suggest that this question carries implicit notions of victim blame and fails to hold to account the perpetrators of abuse. The studies described in this book, however, explore the question from the perspectives of survivors and represent a shift away from individual pathology to an approach based on the recognition of structural oppression, agency and resilience. Comprising eight chapters, new theoretical frameworks for the analysis of IPV are provided to guide practitioners and policy makers in improving services for vulnerable people in abusive relationships, and a range of studies into the experiences of a diverse range of survivors, including mothers in Portugal, women who experienced child marriage in Uganda, and refugees in the United States of America, generate findings which elucidate perspectives from marginalised and under-researched groups.

Book excerpt: Educational inequalities have strongly impacted disadvantaged and underservedpopulations such us indigenous, Roma, migrant children, students with disabilities,and those affected by poverty. A wide array of research has contributed toexplaining the mechanisms and effects of inequalities in the achievement patterns,dropout rates, disengagement in the school experiences of children and youthtraditionally excluded. Research also suggests the negative consequences for childdevelopment – including cognitive, language, and social–emotional functioning – ofpoverty and lack of quality education in the early years. Consequently, the currentunequal access to optimal learning environments for every single child to succeedin education and to have a better life perpetuates the exclusion and neglects theright to education for those minorities. This Research Topic aims at moving beyondcauses and shed light upon effective solutions by providing successful pathways forintegration and inclusion of the learners most heavily affected. Scholars worldwide are looking for successful actions with children, youth, andcommunities of learners historically underserved to overcome educational andsocial exclusion. These transformative approaches go beyond the deficit thinkingand are grounded in theories, empirical evidence, and multidisciplinary interventionsoriented towards achieving social impact, which refers to the extent to which thoseactions have contributed to improve a societal challenge. The international networkof “Schools as Learning Communities” is advancing knowledge on deepening andexpanding the impact of what has been defined as Successful Educational Actions(SEAs); that is, those interventions that improve students’ achievement and socialcohesion and inclusion in many diverse contexts, regardless the socioeconomic,national, and cultural environment of schools. Drawing on the evidence generated by this network of researchers to address the globalchallenge of inequality by studying educational actions oriented towards achievingsocial impact and potentially transferrable to other contexts, this Research Topic aimsat deepening on this approach. In short, our purpose is that the contributions includedin this Research Topic contribute to reduce educational and social inequalities andespecially benefit those populations most in need.
