Book excerpt: A Long Way to Go: Irregular Migration Patterns, Processes, Drivers and Decision-making presents the findings of a unique migration research program harnessing work of some of the leading international and Australian migration researchers on the challenging and complex topic of irregular maritime migration. The book brings together selected findings of the research program, and in doing so it contributes to the ongoing academic and policy discourses by providing findings from rigorous quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research to support a better understanding of the dynamics of irregular migration and their potential policy implications. Stemming from the 2012 Expert Panel on Asylum Seekers report, the Irregular Migration Research Program commissioned 26 international research projects involving 17 academic principal researchers, along with private sector specialist researchers, international organisations and policy think tanks. The centrepiece of the research program was a multi-year collaborative partnership between the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and The Australian National University’s Crawford School of Public Policy. Under this partnership, empirical research on international irregular migration was commissioned from migration researchers in Australia, Indonesia, Iran, the Netherlands, Sri Lanka and Switzerland.

Book excerpt: A Long Way to Go: Conversations about Race by African American Faculty and Graduate Students highlights the experiences and coping strategies of faculty members and graduate students pursuing Ph.D.s who have successfully navigated the academy despite hostile environments and hurdles that cause many to avoid or leave the academy. African American students and faculty often face problems such as isolation within a white environment, the misinterpretation of confidence as aggressiveness, and the need to work twice as hard as white peers in order to be taken seriously in their chosen careers. This book will assist both doctoral students and junior faculty in successfully completing the graduate school experience and transitioning into tenure-track positions, and will be of great interest to all higher education faculty and administrators who must address the complex issues of diversity in recruiting and retaining graduate students and faculty.

Book excerpt: Book Summary: Heaven Is A Long Way to Go This non-fiction book takes the reader into the hopes, hardships, and tragedies of four generations of ambitious individuals, connected by lineage and marriage. They emigrated to America from Norway, England and the Isle of Man, seeking freedom and free lands offered by the federal Homestead Act. Settling in Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, and Nebraska, they were challenged by economic humiliations, locust plagues, blizzards, prairie fires, accidents, and illness. There were good times too, like picnics, family bonding, and baseball! A source of hope for family members in difficult times was their belief in Seventh-day Adventism, a rapidly growing Christian denomination. They were sustained by their belief in an imminent Second Coming of Christ to earth, during which they would be taken to a safe and everlasting heaven. Author T. Joe Willey based his stories on research from old newspapers, letters, and other publications of the time, using historical methodology, not as a religious apologetic.

Book excerpt: In the early 1960s an eleven-year-old boy from an isolated bush village in the Congo forest climbs on a passenger train at a small station near Angola to sell fruit, but he fails to get off in time. Believing the train will reverse direction, hes carried across central Africa to Elisabethville. Armed soldiers force him off the train, and he enters a city where he knows no one or how to survive. Alone and knowing nothing about life in a rapidly growing, modern African city, the boys pleas for help go unanswered. Hes lost and alone until a street boy teaches him how to steal and beg. His attempts to slip aboard a train to return home remain blocked by armed soldiers. He learns to live by his wits and becomes adept at stealing purses, wallets, and unguarded parcels. He witnesses the death of a friend, is caught in the middle of a military battle for the city, and lives in fear of being killed by a local thief. Suspicious and distrustful of white people, hes reluctant to accept assistance from a foreigner who offers to send him to school. He becomes ill and almost dies until found by the one willing to help. He becomes part of this mans family and visits the site of his old home in the bush. He never loses his desire to locate his village family, but he discovers that home isnt a place but people who care for him.

Book excerpt: A Long Way Home is a dramatic and tension-filled fictional story that explores the relationship between the English and the Irish in the late nineteenth century. It provides a fascinating insight into the issues created when those looking for conciliation come into conflict with those relying on confrontation in the struggle for Irish independence. The book traces the experiences of Paul Doherty, an Irishman immigrant. In a story that raises important issues of race, class, religion, sex, violence, and secret societies, Doherty struggles to look for conciliation rather than confrontation, bringing him into conflict with his great friend and fellow Irishman, Will, who is a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. The theme of confrontation and conciliation continues through the relationships Doherty has with the English arch racist Maurice Whitehouse and the English philanthropist William Harding. The book also draws upon comparisons between life in rural Ireland and the dark streets of an English industrial town of the late nineteenth century as it builds to a powerful conclusion of romance and violence.
