The book En Province, which was serialized in The Atlantic Monthly from 1883 to 1884 under the title, describes a six-week trip James took to numerous provincial French cities, including Tours, Bourges, Nantes, Toulouse, Arles, and many others. In 1884, the first book was published. In 1900, a second, considerably updated version with pictures by Joseph Pennell was released. In the first line of the first chapter of the original magazine serial, James states: "Paris may be France, but Paris is not France." He intended the book to be a description of the provinces and perhaps even a tribute to them. Before deciding to settle in London in 1876, James had attempted to live in Paris. When he went back to France in 1882, he was able to see more of French rural life than he had before. Author Henry James visited France in 1882 and described his experiences in an easygoing, urbane, witty style. He was particularly interested in ancient cathedrals and castles, the less restored the better. There's little attempt at generalization or abstract theorizing; he is content to describe as accurately as possible.

Book excerpt: A Little Tour of France By Henry James, 1884 Often considered to be a classic literary guidebook, "A Little Tour in France" was first published in 1884 and is a first person narrative of Henry James's travels through and thoughts on this country. From Tours to Dijon, James tells of the towns and cities, the church and inns, the museums and palaces. "I am ashamed to begin with saying that Touraine is the garden of France; that remark has long ago lost its bloom. The town of Tours, however, has something sweet... Book excerpt: A Little Tour of France by Henry James The notes presented in this volume were gathered, as will easily be perceived, a number of years ago and on an expectation not at that time answered by the event, and were then published in the United States. The expectation had been that they should accompany a series of drawings, and they themselves were altogether governed by the pictorial spirit. They made, and they make in appearing now, after a considerable interval and for the first time, in England, no pretension to any other; they are impressions, immediate, easy, and consciously limited; if the written word may ever play the part of brush or pencil, they are sketches on "drawing-paper" and nothing more. From the moment the principle of selection and expression, with a tourist, is not the delight of the eyes and the play of fancy, it should be an energy in every way much larger; there is no happy mean, in other words, I hold, between the sense and the quest of the picture, and the surrender to it, and the sense and the quest of the constitution, the inner springs of the subject-springs and connections social, economic, historic. Book excerpt: We good Americans - I say it without presumption - are too apt to think that France is Paris, just as we are accused of being too apt to think that Paris is the celestial city. This is by no means the case, fortunately for those persons who take an interest in modern Gaul, and yet are still left vaguely unsatisfied by that epitome of civilization which stretches from the Arc de Triomphe to the Gymnase theatre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geoffrey Wheatcroft's hugely entertaining and well researched history of the Tour de France is already established as the definitive account of cycling's greatest event. Since the book was last published in 2007, much has changed. Bradley Wiggins' historic victory in 2012 - the first Briton ever to secure the yellow jersey - brought him a knighthood and garnered more interest in the race than ever before. Yet the months after were dominated by an even bigger story, as Tour legend and seven-time winner Lance Armstrong was stripped of his titles and confessed on Oprah to doping in each of his victories. Suddenly, everything that we thought we knew had happened was no longer true. In this new and comprehensively revised edition of the book, Wheatcroft not only brings his story of the Tour fully up to date to mark the race's 100th running in 2013, he also reflects on the changes brought about by the scandals that have rocked the sport to its core. Yet for all the controversies of modern times, he vividly captures the essential glory and romance of the heroes who battle to conquer one of sport's greatest challenges.
