Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Little Girl in Old San Francisco It was a long journey for a little girl, so long indeed that the old life had almost faded from her mind, and seemed like something done in another existence. When she was younger still she had once surprised her mother by saying, "Mother, where did I live before I came here?" The pale, care-worn woman had glanced at her in vague surprise and answered rather fretfully, "Why, nowhere, child." "Oh, but I remember things," said the little girl with a confident air, looking out of eyes that seemed to take an added shade from her present emotions. "Nonsense! You can't remember things that never happened. That's imagining them, and it isn't true. If you told them they would be falsehoods. There, go out and get me a basket of chips." She was afraid of telling falsehoods, most of those rigid people called them by their plain name, "lies," and whipped their children. So the little girl kept them to herself; she was a very good and upright child as a general thing and knew very little about her tricky father. But she went on imagining. Especially when she studied geography, which she was extravagantly fond of, yet she could never quite decide which country she had lived in. Especially when she studied geography, which she was extravagantly fond of, yet she could never quite decide which country she had lived in. Through those months of journeying in the big vessel over strange waters, for she had been born in an inland hamlet with a great woods of hemlock, spruce, and fir behind the little cottage, and two or three small creeks wandering about, she had many strange thoughts. Though at first she was quite ill, but Uncle Jason was the best nurse in the world, and presently she began to run about and get acquainted. There were only a few women passengers. One middle-aged, with a son sixteen, who was working his way; a few wives emigrating with their husbands, three women friends who were in the hope of finding an easier life and perhaps husbands, though they hardly admitted that to each other.

The little girl looked up into her father's face to see if he was making fun. He did some times. He was beginning to go down the hill of middle life, a rather stout personage with a fair, florid complexion, brown hair, rough and curly, and a border of beard shaved well away from his mouth. Both beard and hair were getting threads of white in them. His jolly blue eyes were mostly in a twinkle, and his good-natured mouth looked as if he might be laughing at you. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmund Spenser's vast epic poem The Faerie Queene is the most challenging masterpiece in early modern literature and is praised as the work most representative of the Elizabethan age. In it he fused traditions of medieval romance and classical epic, his religious and political allegory creating a Protestant alternative to the Catholic romances rejected by humanists and Puritans. The poem was later made over as children's literature, retold in lavish volumes and schoolbooks and appreciated in pedagogical studies and literary histories. Distinguished writers for children simplified the stories and noted artists illustrated them. Children were less encouraged to consider the allegory than to be inspired to the moral virtues. This book studies The Faerie Queene's many adaptations for a young audience in order to provide a richer understanding of both the original and adapted texts.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from McTeague a Story of San Francisco The suggestiveness Of these facts, even in so bare an outline of Norris's human experience, is too plain to be mistaken. That he drew largely upon his own observation and personal experience must be evident to every careful reader of his books. He takes us into the throbbing financial centres Of his native Chicago in The Pit, to Harvard in Vandover and the Brute, to San Francisco in such stories as Moran and the Lady Letty, Blix, and mcteague. But this is not all. It is not a light undertaking to tell the truth about life, and there were many things in Norris's experience which tended to concentrate his attention on certain aspects Of life, and led him to interpret the riddle of existence from a too exclusively modern point Of view. Life had been revealed to him as it was in two ultra-modern, intensely commercial, and highly prosperous Western cities, where there was much that was crude, blatant, and vulgar, unsoftened and unsteadied by the gracious influences of a long past. There was no background; no vague, mysterious distance. Like Nature herself, in that clear, restless, Western atmosphere, everything showed glittering and distinct, with sharp, hard out lines. And even if we add to this Norris's compara tively brief experiences in Paris and at Harvard, there is still something lacking; there is still that self-assured and pervading modemness, weak in spiritual appre hension, little fitted to nourish reverence, humility, and awe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What we know of the marked body in nineteenth-century American literature and culture often begins with The Scarlet Letter's Hester Prynne and ends with Moby Dick's Queequeg. This study looks at the presence of marked men and women in a more challenging array of canonical and lesser-known works, including exploration narratives, romances, and frontier novels. Jennifer Putzi shows how tattoos, scars, and brands can function both as stigma and as emblem of healing and survival, thus blurring the borderline between the biological and social, the corporeal and spiritual. Examining such texts as Typee, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Captivity of the Oatman Girls, The Morgesons, Iola Leroy, and Contending Forces, Putzi relates the representation of the marked body to significant events, beliefs, or cultural shifts, including tattooing and captivity, romantic love, the patriarchal family, and abolition and slavery. Her particular focus is on both men and women of color, as well as white women-in other words, bodies that did not signify personhood in the nineteenth century and thus by their very nature were grotesque. Complicating the discourse on agency, power, and identity, these texts reveal a surprisingly complex array of representations of and responses to the marked body--some that are a product of essentialist thinking about race and gender identities and some that complicate, critique, or even rebel against conventional thought.
