Book excerpt: This pamphlet, written by English clergyman Thomas Brett in the early 18th century, examines the differences between the English Bible and the Septuagint, a Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible that was widely used in the early Christian church. Brett argues that the English Bible is in many ways superior to the Septuagint, which he claims contains numerous inaccuracies and corruptions. A Letter Shewing Why Our English Bibles Differ So Much from the Septuagint is a fascinating historical document that sheds light on the history of biblical translation in England. Book Synopsis The Septuagint and Homeric Scholarship in Alexandria by : Sylvie Honigman
Download or read book The Septuagint and Homeric Scholarship in Alexandria written by Sylvie Honigman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-05-05 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Letter of Aristeas tells the story of how Ptolemy Philadelphus of Egypt commissioned seventy scholars to translate the Hebrew Bible into Greek. Long accepted as a straightforward historical account of a cultural enterprise in Ptolemaic Alexandria, the Letter nevertheless poses serious interpretative problems. Sylvie Honigman argues that the Letter should not be regarded as history, but as a charter myth for diaspora Judaism. She expounds its generic affinities with other works on Jewish history from Ptolemaic Alexandria, and argues that the process of translation was simultaneously a process of establishing an authoritative text, comparable to the work on the text of Homer being carried out by contemporary Greek scholars. The Letter of Aristeas is among the most intriguing literary productions of Ptolemaic Alexandria, and this is the first book-length study to be devoted to it.

Book Synopsis Greek of the Septuagint by : Gary Alan Chamberlain
Download or read book Greek of the Septuagint written by Gary Alan Chamberlain and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For New Testament students and scholars who want to fully exegete the Septuagint (LXX), this lexicon will be a welcome addition to their libraries. Used in conjunction with the New Testament (NT) lexicon they already possess, The Greek of the Septuagint: A Supplemental Lexicon will bridge the gap with additional information that's needed to translate the Septuagint. While those who have learned the Greek of the New Testament possess the grammatical skills necessary to read Septuagint Greek, the vocabulary found in the Septuagint differs sufficiently from both NT and Classical Greek to such a degree that a specialized lexicon is essential. Designed to supplement the BDAG, Chamberlain's lexical expertise provided here, lists definitions and lexical information for more than 5,000 Septuagint words not found in the New Testament, detailed discussions of contextual word meanings, Hebrew equivalents, and mistranslations, variant words not found in standard lexicons, and much more.
Book Synopsis Messianic Aleph Tav Interlinear Scriptures Volume One the Torah, Paleo and Modern Hebrew-Phonetic Translation-English, Red Letter Edition Study Bible by : William H. Sanford
Download or read book Messianic Aleph Tav Interlinear Scriptures Volume One the Torah, Paleo and Modern Hebrew-Phonetic Translation-English, Red Letter Edition Study Bible written by William H. Sanford and published by . This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Messianic Aleph Tav Interlinear Scriptures" (MATIS) is the most unique Interlinear Study Bible of its kind in the world. MATIS is the first true Interlinear Study Bible to combine both the Paleo and the Babylonian Block Hebrew with a distinctive Hebrew translation for each word. The purpose of MATIS is to provide a Study Bible whereby each Hebrew word and its letters could be studied to obtain a deeper understanding of what the originators were trying to express. Charts are provided in the back of MATIS that break down both the potential meanings of the Hebrew letters and the Hebrew letter code used to translate the Hebrew. MATIS also incorporates the popular Strong's numbering system for each word in the interlinear section with a complete Strong's Hebrew Dictionary to provide for more in depth study. MATIS English translation began with the public domain version of the 1987 KJV and removed all the old English for easier reading. All English words originally used in the KJV for deities have also been replaced with their original Hebrew words. MATIS is also unique in regard to the Hebrew verses running in sequence from left to right with the English while the Hebrew individual words are written from right to left as originally written by the Sages for thousands of years. The word order the Hebrew verses are written is the exact order they were written originally except in reverse, which allows the verses to run parallel with the English. This combination is also unique and makes it easier for beginners to study the Hebrew language in comparison to both the Hebrew and English translations. The First Volume of MATIS is the TORAH with additional MATIS volumes being, volume two the WRITINGS, volume three the PROPHETS and volume four the B'rit Chadashah (New Testament). MATIS also furthers the journey of the study of the Aleph/Tav character symbol by revealing thousands of words that originally incorporate this symbol in Paleo Hebrew, and apparently for good reason! MATIS is truly the perfect gift for the believer who is interested in studying Hebrew and desires to analyze each Hebrew word and the meaning of each Hebrew letter in the original Hebrew text in order to obtain a deeper understanding of what the originators, as well as our creator was trying to express in the Hebrew language. MATIS comes in your choice of either Red Letter or Bold Black 8.5x11 editions. About the Author William H.
