Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about our early family life. But the story is much more. It is about life itself the life experiences that all of us share. "A Legacy for the Eight of Us" begins with a look back at some of our ancestors, next describes Daddy and Mama's early lives and continues with their marriage in 1925. It then focuses on the early life of their family my seven siblings and myself -- concentrating on our life during the 1930s and 40s. This life took place in another era on a farm in central Illinois. You will read vivid details of that life. You will share in our familys interactions, our heritage, our faith, our love of the land; but you also will share in our challenges and shortcomings. As I wrote this book, I kept in mind the admonition heard at a series of Barn Lectures at the Carson Valley Museum: "We cannot know where we are going as a people until we know where we have been." It can be beneficial for each of us to discover our own individual legacies. From the memories captured in these pages, I hope you discover more about our familys legacy.

Book excerpt: For centuries the Irish have been associated with a stick weapon called the Shillelagh. And for generations of Irishmen, the Shillelagh was a badge of honor - a symbol of their courage, their martial prowess and their willingness to fight for their rights and their honor. In modern popular culture, the Shillelagh has acquired a less appealing image, one that attempts to declaw the Irish through negative racial stereotypes of the Victorian era, which depict the Irish as harmless club-weilding Leprecauns or drunken, half-witted brawlers. John Hurley's illuminating study forever alters our view of this much maligned and misunderstood cultural icon by revealing the true martial arts culture of the Irish people, its history, evolution and decline and the resulting effects on the Shillelagh - the most powerful and controversial of Irish icons.

Book excerpt: In 1957, The Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company at 300 Broadway in Newark, NJ sold its granite-pillared headquarters to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark. That fall, Essex Catholic High School was born and opened its vast bronze doors to a first freshmen enrollment of 240 students. Within the next seven years, the school's enrollment was close to 3,000. An incoming freshman asked his uncle, a medical doctor, if he would share his fencing prowess by establishing and coaching a fencing club at the school. And so, in October 1960, five students tried out for fencing. Over the next 14 years, Dr. Samuel D'Ambola gave of his time and his heart, without pay, and created a dynasty at Essex Catholic, winning over 20 titles including 9 state championships and producing scores of athletes that would become collegiate All Americans, Olympic medalists, world class athletes, and prominent professional businessmen, most of whom went to college on athletic and academic scholarships. This is the chronicle of motivation, discipline, and understanding how to respect a sport with all that it brings - loss as well as victory, teammates raising each other up to greater heights, and passing the baton of excellence from one varsity team to the next, from the natural-born athlete to the less-gifted. This is, most of all, the chronicle of Coach Sam "Doc" D'Ambola who allowed hundreds of fencers to understand the key to lifetime achievement: agility of mind.

Book excerpt: “Like swordplay itself, By the Sword is elegant, accurate, romantic, and full of brio—the definitive study, hugely readable, of man’s most deadly art.”—Simon Winchester With a new Preface by the author Napoleon fenced. So did Shakespeare, Karl Marx, Grace Kelly, and President Truman, who as a schoolboy would practice fencing with Bess—his future wife— when the two of them returned home from school. Lincoln was a canny dueler. Ignatius Loyola challenged a man to a duel for denying Christ’s divinity (and won). Less successful, but no less enthusiastic, was Mussolini, who would tell his wife he was “off to get spaghetti,” their code to avoid alarming the children. By the Sword is an epic history of sword fighting—a science, an art, and, for many, a religion that began at the dawn of civilization in ancient Egypt and has been an obsession for mankind ever since. With wit and insight, Richard Cohen gives us an engrossing history of the world via the sword. Praise for By the Sword “Touché! While scrupulous and informed about its subject, Richard Cohen’s book is about more than swordplay. It reads at times like an alternative social history of the West.”—Sebastian Faulks “In writing By the Sword, [Cohen] has shown that he is as skilled with the pen as he is with the sword.”—The New York Times “Irresistible . . . extraordinary . . . vivid and hugely enjoyable.”—The Economist “A virtual encyclopedia on the subject of sword fighting.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Literate, learned, and, beg pardon, razor-sharp . . . a pleasure for practitioners, and a rewarding entertainment for the armchair swashbuckler.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conflict between increasing human population and biodiversity conservation is one of the IUCN’s key threatening processes. Conservation planning has received a great deal of coverage and research as a way of conserving biodiversity yet, while theoretically successful, it has never been tested. Simple lines on maps to illustrate conservation areas are unlikely to be successful in the light of human encroachment. It may be that some form of overt display is necessary to ensure the protection of reserves. This may be signage, presence of guards/rangers or physical fencing structures. The need for some form of barrier goes beyond restricting human access. The megafauna of Africa pose a genuine threat to human survival. In southern Africa, fences keep animals in and protect the abutting human population. Elsewhere, fencing is not considered important or viable. Where poverty is rife, it won’t take much to tip the balance from beneficial conservation areas to troublesome repositories of crop-raiders, diseases and killers. Conversely, in New Zealand fences are used to keep animals out. Introduced species have decimated New Zealand’s endemic birds, reptiles and invertebrates, and several sites have been entirely encapsulated in mouse-proof fencing to ensure their protection. Australia faces the same problems as New Zealand, however surrounds its national parks with cattle fences. Foxes and cats are free to enter and leave at will, resulting in rapid recolonisation following poisoning campaigns. How long will these poison campaigns work before tolerance, aversion or resistance evolves in the introduced predator populations?

Book excerpt: A Legacy of Learning examines the principal periods in the history of European and American education, beginning in ancient Greece and ending in twentieth-century America. It is a superior textbook for courses in the history of western education, tightly organized to cover the territory while developing a strong central theme addressing the continuities of western educational experience. Special attention is given to philosophies of knowledge, the content of instruction, cultural evolution, and educational policy. The history of education can be construed so broadly as to be unmanageable. Power's thoughtful organization and clear story-telling prose delineates and brings to life the watershed epochs in educational history.
