Book Synopsis Black Reconstruction in America by : W. E. B. Du Bois
Download or read book Black Reconstruction in America written by W. E. B. Du Bois and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2013-05-06 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After four centuries of bondage, the nineteenth century marked the long-awaited release of millions of black slaves. Subsequently, these former slaves attempted to reconstruct the basis of American democracy. W. E. B. Du Bois, one of the greatest intellectual leaders in United States history, evaluates the twenty years of fateful history that followed the Civil War, with special reference to the efforts and experiences of African Americans. Du Bois’s words best indicate the broader parameters of his work: "the attitude of any person toward this book will be distinctly influenced by his theories of the Negro race. If he believes that the Negro in America and in general is an average and ordinary human being, who under given environment develops like other human beings, then he will read this story and judge it by the facts adduced." The plight of the white working class throughout the world is directly traceable to American slavery, on which modern commerce and industry was founded, Du Bois argues. Moreover, the resulting color caste was adopted, forwarded, and approved by white labor, and resulted in the subordination of colored labor throughout the world. As a result, the majority of the world’s laborers became part of a system of industry that destroyed democracy and led to World War I and the Great Depression. This book tells that story.

Book Synopsis Songs of the Reconstructing South by : Suzanne Disheroon-Green
Download or read book Songs of the Reconstructing South written by Suzanne Disheroon-Green and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2002-03-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South has a rich cultural legacy and that of Louisiana is especially strong and diverse. Despite its similarities with the rest of the South, Louisiana has a distinct cultural identity rooted in the colonial impulses of France and Spain, the evolution of gender roles, the importance of religion, and the dramatic shift in racial politics after the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Perhaps because of its diversity, it has inspired numerous writers, some of whom have contributed greatly to American literature. This book explores the influences at work on Louisiana writers and those writing about Louisiana from the end of the Civil War through World War II. These writers reflect the effects of Louisiana's culture, politics, and colonial heritage. Such writers as Alice Dunbar-Nelson, Lyle Saxon, and George Washington Cable characterize the racial caste system, pointing out the flaws in its construction and its effects on relationships. Ruth McEnery Stuart, Kate Chopin, and Sallie Rhett Roman depict the lives of women in Louisiana and their struggles when taking on nontraditional roles. And William Faulkner and Arna Bontemps draw upon narrative and folk traditions, which provide the foundations for their works. Chapters are grouped in sections devoted to three of the broadest influences on writers of the era: women, work, and culture during Reconstruction; the impact of Modernism; and issues of race and class.
Book Synopsis The Translation of Violence in Children’s Literature by : Marija Todorova
Download or read book The Translation of Violence in Children’s Literature written by Marija Todorova and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considering children’s literature as a powerful repository for creating and proliferating cultural and national identities, this monograph is the first academic study of children’s literature in translation from the Western Balkans. Marija Todorova looks at a broad range of children’s literature, from fiction to creative non-fiction and picture books, across five different countries in the Western Balkans, with each chapter including detailed textual and visual analysis through the predominant lens of violence. These chapters raise questions around who initiates and effectuates the selection of children’s literature from the Western Balkans for translation into English, and interrogate the role of different stakeholders, such as translators, publishers and cultural institutions in the representation and construction of these countries in translated children’s literature, both in text and visually. Given the combination of this study’s interdisciplinary nature and Todorova’s detailed analysis, this book will prove to be an essential resource for professional translators, researchers and students in courses in translation studies, children’s literature or area studies, especially that of countries in the Western Balkans. .

Book Synopsis Is That a Big Number? by : Andrew Elliott
Download or read book Is That a Big Number? written by Andrew Elliott and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impressive statistics are thrown at us every day - the cost of health care; the size of an earthquake; the distance to the nearest star; the number of giraffes in the world. We know all these numbers are important - some more than others - and it's vaguely unsettling when we don't really have a clear sense of how remarkable or how ordinary they are. How do we work out what these figures actually mean? Are they significant, should we be worried, or excited, or impressed? How big is big, how small is small? With this entertaining and engaging book, help is at hand. Andrew Elliott gives us the tips and tools to make sense of numbers, to get a sense of proportion, to decipher what matters. It is a celebration of a numerate way of understanding the world. It shows how number skills help us to understand the everyday world close at hand, and how the same skills can be stretched to demystify the bigger numbers that we find in the wider contexts of science, politics, and the universe. Entertaining, full of practical examples, and memorable concepts, Is That A Big Number? renews our relationship with figures. If numbers are the musical notes with which the symphony of the universe is written, and you're struggling to hear the tune, then this is the book to get you humming again.
Book Synopsis Choices and Challenges by : Alan G. Greer
Download or read book Choices and Challenges written by Alan G. Greer and published by Wordclay. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choices and Challenges is a fresh way of looking at humanity's relationships with God and each other. Based on the concept that while God loves us He does not exist to serve humanity but that we exist to serve God, Alan Greer confronts and debunks the atheistic notion that since our world and its multitude of religions are demonstrably imperfect with each and every one of us not being protected from all harm, God can not exist because if He did He would have prevented all such imperfections. Greer likewise challenges the other extreme that two to four thousand years ago God laid down a series of laws and rules that can not under any circumstances be changed or broken. Instead Greer shows how God has taught us how and when to break those rules in favor of new and better ones. Choices and Challenges demonstrates that God has an ongoing purpose for each of us and for humanity as a whole that stretches into the far distant future.

Download or read book Early Alabama written by Mike Bunn and published by University Alabama Press. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated guidebook documenting the history and sites of the state’s origins Alabama’s territorial and early statehood years represent a crucial formative period in its past, a time in which the state both literally and figuratively took shape. The story of the remarkable changes that occurred within Alabama as it transitioned from frontier territory to a vital part of the American union in less than a quarter century is one of the most compelling in the state’s past. This history is rich with stories of charismatic leaders, rugged frontiersmen, a dramatic and pivotal war that shaped the state’s trajectory, raging political intrigue, and pervasive sectional rivalry. Many of Alabama’s modern cities, counties, and religious, educational, and governmental institutions first took shape within this time period. It also gave way to the creation of sophisticated trade and communication networks, the first large-scale cultivation of cotton, and the advent of the steamboat. Contained within this story of growth and innovation is a parallel story, the dispossession of Native groups of their lands and the forced labor of slaves, which fueled much of Alabama’s early development. Early Alabama: An Illustrated Guide to the Formative Years, 1798–1826 serves as a traveler’s guidebook with a fast-paced narrative that traces Alabama’s developmental years. Despite the great significance of this era in the state’s overall growth, these years are perhaps the least understood in all of the state’s history and have received relatively scant attention from historians. Mike Bunn has created a detailed guide—appealing to historians and the general public—for touring historic sites and structures including selected homes, churches, businesses, government buildings, battlefields, cemeteries, and museums..
