'he bar, painted with the royal colours, black and white, was raised. N 0 one appeared either to exact dues, or to question the passer-by as to his whereabout; but the coachman stopped at the door, and took in my passport. In a minute or two he returned and we resumed our journey, and I found that I had passed through one of the entrance or exit gates of Prussia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey to St. Petersburg and Moscow Through Courland and Livonia The desert became still more desolate, and the wind began to moan with that strange unearthly sound which it has in lonely places, over tracts of snow or sand. To the left, the wilderness was bound in by the distant Baltic as with a girdle, only distinguishable from the sky, with which it mingled, by its deeper blue. Every where else fields of sand and morass extended to the verge of the horizon. This apparently was a neutral ground between the two countries and it was with no small degree of curiosity that I awaited my introduction into Russia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia and the Russians: Or, a Journey to St. Petersburg and Moscow, Through Courland and Livonia; With Characteristic Sketches of the People When the author undertook to travel in Russia, - a country about which so many conflicting opinions have been published, - he thought he would best consult the advantage of the public by making his book a work entirely of information, and allowing whatever amusement it might contain to depend upon the nature of the facts communicated. It was with this idea he set out upon the journey, and he soon found reason to congratulate himself upon his decision. He has not indulged either in theory or controversy. He has given a plain account of what he saw with his own eyes, and heard with his own ears; and however much the narrative may in some parts be condemned by former travellers and their admirers, he is conscious that it will one day receive credit for its truth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Summer Tour in Russia There is no deficiency of good books on Russia. There is an excellent one by Mr. Mackenzie Wallace, which was valued by the late Emperor Alexander II. As the best that ever was or ever could be written. And I confess that, had I read Mr. Wallace's two volumes before I set out on my last year's tour, I might have felt tempted to give up the task as uncalled for and unprofitable, and should not now come before the public with what may be deemed a new work on an old subject. But in reality, though books may grow Old, subjects are ever fresh. Mr. Wallace's Russia is the Russia of ten years since. Within ten years, nay, within the last twelvemonth, the great Northern Empire has gone through a crisis of which it would then have been as difficult to foresee the causes as it is now to calculate the consequences. Mr. Wallace has nobly toiled six years to illustrate the recent history of a nation's life. My object was not to write Mr. Wallace's narrative over again, but only to add one page to it. Book excerpt: Journeys to a Graveyard examines the descriptions provided by eight Russian writers of journeys made to western European countries between 1697 and 1880. The descriptions reveal the mentality and preoccupations of the Russian social and intellectual elites during this period. The travellers' perceptions of western European countries are treated here as an ambivalent response to a civilization with which Russia was belatedly coming into close contact as a result of the imperial ambition of the Russian state and the westernization of the Russian elites. The travellers perceived the most advanced European countries as superior to Russia in terms of material achievement and the maturity and refinement of their cultures, but they also promoted a view of Russia as in other respects superior to the western nations. Heavily influenced from the late eighteenth century by Romanticism and by the rise of nationalism in the west, they tended to depict European civilization as moribund. By this means they managed to define their own emergent nation in a contrastive way as having youth and promising futurity.
