Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Jewish Interpretation of the Book of Genesis The two publics which this book now seeks to reach are those of the professional Jewish religious school teacher, whose main concern is to learn as much of the subject as possible, in order to be able in turn to impart instruction with greater efficiency and authority, and the non-professional Jewish Bible student, whose thirst for knowledge and whose Jewish loyalty and interest impel him to seek greater knowl edge of Judaism for himself. I trust that this explanation of how this book came to serve these two publics may oh viate what might otherwise perplex and confuse, and that it may incline both publics to forbearance in their judgment of the book and patience in its use. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Genesis It is a common and lamented fact that most Jewish children in America are not taught to read the Bible with appreciation and pleasure. Conditions in this country are such that very few children ever become proficient enough in Hebrew for an understanding of the Bible in the original, and thus far, very little has been done to teach the Bible text in English. The Bible stories taught in Jewish Sun day Schools and homes cannot take the place of the Bible text. As stories, the Bible narratives have to compete with fairy tales, with Wild West thrillers, with tales of general history and adventure, and with the whole host of attractive stories ofiered to the modern Jewish child; and frequently the Bible narratives lose_in the competition. Only through the text itself can children'get a glimpse into the over powering genuineness, the enduring beauty of style, the primal simplicity of emphasis, the terse vigor, which make the Bible 3 supremely great literature. The American Jew who has not been taught the Bible text in childhood can rarely train himself to read the Bible in later life, because, even in its English translation, he finds the text strange, the diction quaint and unfamiliar, the phrase ology monotonous and the contents confusing. Clearly, if the Bible is to have real meaning to American Jews, it must be taught in childhood as text, if not in the original Hebrew, at least in the American Jewish translation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Jewish Interpretation of the Book of Genesis A word of explanation is due the readers of this book, to whom it may seem at first glance that it is intended to reach two altogether different publics. The book speaks constantly of Jewish children and their instruction, yet it contains much that is far beyond the comprehension of children, and that may seem technical even to the religious school teacher and trained Bible student. No one realizes this better than I, and no one appreciates more the difficulty, and even the danger, of writing for more than one body of readers. However, circumstances make this condition unavoidable. The preparation of this book was undertaken four years ago, at the request and under the supervision of the Board of Editors of the Department of Synagogue and School Extension of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. The intention of the Board of Editors was that this work should not be published, but should serve only as the basis for a series of lessons on the stories of Genesis, to be prepared by a Jewish religious school teacher, able and thoroughly experienced in just this particular field of instruction. These lessons were not to be given into the children's hands, but were to constitute a text-book for teachers, and were to indicate the actual material to be presented in the class-room, and the best method of presentation. This book was to be accompanied by a children's text-book or Bible reader, containing the stories of Genesis in the language of the Bible itself, but simplified so far as possible by the omission of all matter unessential to the main narrative or unsuitable for children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on the Book of Genesis For the right comprehension of the Prophetical Blessings of Jacob, a new rendering was therefore indispensable. Should the author thereby succeed in rectifying any popular errors springing from that Version, he shall consider that he has not labored in vain; but if otherwise, he shall feel happy to be convinced that none exist. The author intends to continue the Discourses to the end of the Pentateuch; but his doing so will of course depend on the encouragement this, the first volume, will receive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Babylonian and the Hebrew Genesis This change has naturally had a decisive effect also upon our conception of the biblical narrative. Once it was believed that in the early chapters of the Bible we possessed the record of a divine revelation concerning the origin of the world and of mankind, delivered to Moses and by him Written down. Now we know that these chapters are rather the introduction to a great historical compilation from sources of varied dates and very varied character, which did not attain its present form until after the Babylonian Exile. As was often the case in early times this com pilation was attached to the name of a famous hero of antiquity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genesis Printed in Colors: Showing the Original Sources From Which It Is Supposed to Have Been Compiled, With an Introduction The History of the People of Israel as presented by themselves, - this is the purpose of the present series. It will be understood that this is something different from the History of the People of Israel in another sense of the term: according to which their historical books are subjected to analysis, with a view to harmonising discrepancies, appraising authorities, filling up gaps from independent sources of information, and by a variety of means arriving at the actual facts and their connections. The latter is the function of the historical critic. But to appreciate the history of a great people as they themselves understood it is an interest of universal literature. It might seem that such a purpose as I have described is easy of attainment; the Bible, with historical books extending from Genesis to Chronicles is in the hands of all: they have but to read. To read is easy; but to read with full appreciation is made difficult by certain differences in the form in which books are presented to the eye in ancient and in modem literatures. The differences, it is true, involve no great mystery; they are such as an intelligent reader can correct for himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Companion to the Book of Genesis The author of the following work does not hesitate to acknowledge, that he offers it to the public with some solicitude. Apart from any per sonal considerations, which it would be affectation wholly to disclaim, there are others of a nature eu tirely different and vastly higher, which must make a strong impression on every writer who feels him self to be a moral and responsible agent. To com ment on the sacred Scriptures is to interpret what God formerly revealed and therefore, the attempt should be made with due seriousness of mind, and suitable intellectual preparation. The expositor should possess a competent acquaintance with the principles and laws of interpretation, and also with the various facts which bear, either directly or in directly, oh the points to be illustrated. He should exercise a proper care and judgment in selecting from the sources of information, and in applying his knowledge to the obscurities which are to be cleared up, and the difficulties which are to be removed. Whether these requisitions shall appear to be met. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Myths of Israel, the Ancient Book of Genesis: With Analysis and Explanation of Its Composition Modern critical research into the sources and character of the ancient scriptures of the Hebrews leaves no reasonable doubt that the Book of Gen esis, which was used as an introduction to the old Jewish law, is a composite production made up largely of myths and fragments of myths em bodying the conceptions of the earliest writers of Israel, regarding the relations of that people to their deity. Study of it in this aspect gives it a new interest and significance, while persist ence in the old View of its origin and meaning is in danger of sinking it from reverence to de rision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hebrew Ideals: A Study of Genesis From Chap; XI. To L This handbook is an attempt to give, not a criticism of documents, but a sympathetic interpretation of ideals, and it is written for the purpose of assisting those who desire first to prove all things, and then to hold fast that which is good. Much critical work has recently been done, and every analysis naturally leads to a fresh synthesis. It is sometimes said that 'vast tracts of Scripture, and especially of the Old Testament, which were luminous and very comfortable to our fathers, are bare desert to the younger generation of preachers.' If there are such tracts, I believe they can all be reclaimed. Genesis, at any rate, should not be allowed to become desert; and rightly cultivated it will always rejoice and blossom as the rose. My conviction is that when criticism has done its worst, or, as I for one prefer to say, its best, Luther's words will be as true as ever: Nihil pulchrius Genesi, nihil utilius. The main portion of Genesis was probably published in the ninth or the eighth century B.C. I assume that it mirrors the period to which it belongs. It is true to the highest moral sentiments of the age. It faithfully represents the supreme type of excellence to which the best minds were then tending. It is in harmony with their beliefs, feelings, and aspirations. It was meant to take possession of human life, to make certain great ideals current, to commend the highest principles of action and rules of conduct.
