Book excerpt: The historic county of Yorkshire lasted for about 1,000 years. Its administrative structure was swept away in 1974, but its distinctive identity is still clearly recognised by its own people and by outsiders. Yorkshire was the largest English county. The three Ridings of Yorkshire covered about an eighth of the whole of the country, stretching from the river Tees in the north to the Humber in the south, and from the North Sea to the highest points of the Pennines. In such a large area there was a huge diversity of experience and history. Life on the Pennines or the North York Moors, for example, has always been very different from life in low-lying agricultural districts such as Holderness or the Humberhead Levels. And the fisherfolk of Staithes or Whitby might not readily recognise the accents, ways or customs of the cutlery makers of Hallamshire, still less perhaps of the farmers of Wensleydale or Craven. In some ways, this diversity makes Yorkshire the most interesting of England's historic counties, a microcosm of the country as a whole. Its variety and beauty also help to explain why Yorkshire is now such a popular tourist desination. Until quite recently people felt that they belonged to their own local area or 'country'. Few people travelled very far, and it was not until the late nineteenth century that the success of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club seems to have forged the idea of Yorkshire as a singular identity, and which gave its people a sense of their superiority. This single volume describes the broad sweep of Yorkshire's history from the end of the last Ice Age up to the present day. To do so Professor Hey has had to tell the story of each particular region and of each town. He talks about farming and mining, trade and industry, fishing and ways of life in all parts of the county. Having lived, worked, researched, taught and walked in the county for many years, he has amassed an enormously detailed knowledge and understanding of Yorkshire. The fruits of his work are presented here in what has been described as 'a bravura performance' by one of the Yorkshire's finest historians". With a particular emphasis on the richness of landscape, places and former ways of life, this important book is a readable, informative and fascinating overview of Yorkshire's past and its people.

Book excerpt: This revised edition of the story of the wonderful town of Filey on the Yorkshire Coast includes additional stories including 'who put Filey Brigg up for sale' and the story of Filey's Dragon-together with the endearing story of Bonzo Filey's Pet Seal. Filey 'The Unspoilt Hidden Gem of The Yorkshire Coast' with its glorious wide golden beach, elegant Victorian houses and well-kept gardens, but what were Filey's origins? Unlike the neighbouring town of Scarborough, Filey was mentioned in the Domesday Book 'as a very small village occupied by less than fifty people, and that Filey was worth a reasonable income, with access to good quality timber which was ideal for construction.' So, were these people Filey's oldest residents? Filey a History of The Town and its People traces the history of the town from Roman times through time. It tells the history of the town's churches and the influence that the Methodist had on the community. The book also warns of the dangers of the sea, and its treacherous tides, and recalls stories of many people who have lost their lives to the sea over the years. It also recalls the story of The Bonhomme Richard and its notorious Captain John Paul Jones. The book is illustrated with over one hundred photographs.

Book excerpt: The Parisi were a tribe located somewhere within the present day East Riding of Yorkshire, UK, known from a brief reference by Ptolemy They were originally immigrants from Gaul and share their name with the tribe that occupied modern day France. Fairly obvious from their name, they gave the French capital its name. The investigation of the Parisi began in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, following the trend for antiquarian exploration elsewhere in Britain. Before that the remains of Roman buildings encountered in medieval East Yorkshire were treated with little respect and used as a resource. The Parisi tells this captivating story of the history of the archaeology of The Parisi, from the initial investigations in the sixteenth century right through to modern day investigations.

Book excerpt: A full English breakfast is a morning meal served at many British bed & breakfasts. This meal has all the trimmings: coffee, tea, orange juice, fruit, cereal, eggs, sausages, bacon, toast, tomatoes, mushrooms, and a host of other offerings including orange marmalade and brown sauce. A ramble might be a wandering narrative, but it can also be a leisurely excursion, taking in the pleasures of the land and the peoples of the region and enjoying every minute of it (well, almost). In this trek through London, Cardiff, York, and Thirsk, you’ll encounter — along with the author and his brother, Bill — historical tourist sites, the London Underground, and public houses. Nods are given to The Beatles, Monty Python, James Herriot, and also to an impatient train car attendant, short-legged field trippers, Americans attempting to find some real food in London, as well as many other lively characters and situations. Whether you’ve been considering a trip to Britain, you’ve already visited Britain, you live in Britain, or you are content to relax in an armchair reading about Britain, Todd Wisti provides a healthy dosage of wry humor and sometimes misshapen adventures in Full English Breakfast. Foreword by Bill Wisti
