Book excerpt: Wapwallopen is a little village right along the serpentine Susquehanna River in the southwestern corner of Luzerne County, a few miles east of the Columbia County border. It is an enclave of Pennsylvania German ethnicity that sits outside of the more celebrated and well known culturally "Dutch" areas of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Presented here is a brief but relatively complete account of the area's history with an especial focus on this historical "Old River Church". Local urban legends documented within add spice and local color to this small rural village.

Book excerpt: Examining interactions between native Americans and whites in eighteenth-century Pennsylvania, Jane Merritt traces the emergence of race as the defining difference between these neighbors on the frontier. Before 1755, Indian and white communities in Pennsylvania shared a certain amount of interdependence. They traded skills and resources and found a common enemy in the colonial authorities, including the powerful Six Nations, who attempted to control them and the land they inhabited. Using innovative research in German Moravian records, among other sources, Merritt explores the cultural practices, social needs, gender dynamics, economic exigencies, and political forces that brought native Americans and Euramericans together in the first half of the eighteenth century. But as Merritt demonstrates, the tolerance and even cooperation that once marked relations between Indians and whites collapsed during the Seven Years' War. By the 1760s, as the white population increased, a stronger, nationalist identity emerged among both white and Indian populations, each calling for new territorial and political boundaries to separate their communities. Differences between Indians and whites--whether political, economic, social, religious, or ethnic--became increasingly characterized in racial terms, and the resulting animosity left an enduring legacy in Pennsylvania's colonial history.

Book excerpt: Located between the Penobscot, Wilkes-Barre, and Nescopeck Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania at the headwaters of the Wapwallopen Creek, Mountain Top consists of Wright, Fairview, Dorrance, Slocum, and Rice Townships as well as Nuangola Borough. Settlers entering its rugged forests in the 18th century established lumber camps, sawmills, and farms. Blacksmith shops and taverns opened near rural crossroads at Dorrance, Slocum, and Albert's Corners. During the 19th century, transportation networks moving anthracite from nearby mines to distant markets traversed the region. The neighborhoods of Solomon's Gap and Penobscot grew along with the Lehigh & Susquehanna, Lehigh Valley, and New Jersey Central Railroads, while resorts at Glen Summit and Lake Nuangola attracted seasonal visitors. Access to Mountain Top by motor vehicle improved throughout the 20th century. The construction of Route 309 and Interstates 80 and 81 paved the way for commercial and residential development, including the Crestwood Industrial Park. Today, Mountain Top is a growing suburban community of nearly 17,000 people who enjoy and support its parks, churches, businesses, and schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located at the confluence of the north and west branches of the Susquehanna River, Shamokin was a significant historical settlement in the region that became Pennsylvania. By the time the Moravians arrived to set up a mission in the 1740s, Shamokin had been a site of intertribal commerce and refuge for the Native peoples of Pennsylvania for several centuries. It served first as a Susquehannock, then a Shawnee, and then a primarily Lenape settlement and trading post, overseen by the Oneida leader and diplomat Shikellamy. Cultures at the Susquehanna Confluence is an annotated translation of the diaries documenting the Moravian mission to the area. Unlike other missions of the time, the Moravians at Shamokin integrated their work and daily life into the diverse cultures they encountered, demonstrating an unusual compromise between the Church’s missionary impetus and the needs of the Six Nations of the Iroquois. The diaries counter the dominant vision of the area around Shamokin as a sinister place, revealing instead a nexus of vibrant cultural exchange where women and men speaking Lenape, Mohican, English, and German collaborated in the business of survival at a pivotal time. The Shamokin diaries, which until now existed only in manuscript form in difficult-to-read German script in the Moravian Archives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, allow today’s readers to experience the Susquehanna confluence and the rich intercultural exchanges that took place there between Europeans and Native Americans.
