Download or read book Maritime History at the Crossroads written by Frank Broeze and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume seeks to critically review the contemporary state of maritime historiography, as it stands at the volume’s publication date of 1995. The volume is comprised of thirteen essays, each focused on the recent research into the maritime concerns of a particular geographical location, listed as follows: Australia; Canada; China; Denmark; Germany; Greece; Ibero-America; India; the Netherlands; the Ottoman Empire; Spain; the United States; and a final chapter concerning historians and maritime labour in Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. One concern made evident by the collection is the lack of stable identity and cohesive aims within maritime history, the subject holds many conflicting definitions and concepts. The purpose of this volume is to explore the recent developments in maritime history, plus the growth of scholarly interest, to provide a ‘beacon and stimulus for future work’ and to clearly direct and define maritime historiography toward a solid position in the field of history.

Download or read book A Half Century of Maritime Technology written by Henry Benford and published by . This book was released on 1993-12 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A companion to the Society's rare & prized 1943 HISTORICAL TRANSACTIONS, this volume of over 600 pages continues the tradition, covering the developments in maritime technology over the previous half century. Enhanced with over 500 photos & illustrations & encompassing sixty-one chapters, topics range from "Aircraft Carriers" to "Yachts & Other Pleasure Craft." It requires little knowledge of international affairs to appreciate that A HALF CENTURY OF MARITIME TECHNOLOGY 1943-1993 covers some of the most dramatic events in the shipbuilding world, many of which were to affect not just the U.S. but also the United Kingdom, & indeed were to influence the history of the free world. The main aspects of ship & machinery design are covered, the new technologies of offshore work are described & then considerable emphasis is placed on the political will which led to the great shipbuilding programmes of the early 1940s which helped win the war & subsequently took the western world into the container area. The book also covers Canadian naval architecture, shipbuilding & marine engineering in considerable depth as well as devoting welcome space to the trade of the Great Lakes. This book is to be recommended to both the practicing naval architect & the historian & to any who regard our industry as important enough to be considered in a thoughtful & positive manner.

Book Synopsis Bridging the Seas by : Larrie D. Ferreiro
Download or read book Bridging the Seas written by Larrie D. Ferreiro and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the introduction of steam, iron, and steel required new rules and new ways of thinking for the design and building of ships. In the 1800s, shipbuilding moved from sail and wood to steam, iron, and steel. The competitive pressure to achieve more predictable ocean transportation drove the industrialization of shipbuilding, as shipowners demanded ships that enabled tighter scheduling, improved performance, and safe delivery of cargoes. In Bridging the Seas, naval historian Larrie Ferreiro describes this transformation of shipbuilding, portraying the rise of a professionalized naval architecture as an integral part of the Industrial Age. Picking up where his earlier book, Ships and Science, left off, Ferreiro explains that the introduction of steam, iron, and steel required new rules and new ways of thinking for designing and building ships. The characteristics of performance had to be first measured, then theorized. Ship theory led to the development of quantifiable standards that would ensure the safety and quality required by industry and governments, and this in turn led to the professionalization of naval architecture as an engineering discipline. Ferreiro describes, among other things, the technologies that allowed greater predictability in ship performance; theoretical developments in naval architecture regarding motion, speed and power, propellers, maneuvering, and structural design; the integration of theory into ship design and construction; and the emergence of a laboratory infrastructure for research.

Book Synopsis Reshaping Toronto's Waterfront by : Gene Desfor
Download or read book Reshaping Toronto's Waterfront written by Gene Desfor and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large-scale development is once again putting Toronto's waterfront at the leading edge of change. As in other cities around the world, policymakers, planners, and developers are envisioning the waterfront as a space of promise and a prime location for massive investments. Currently, the waterfront is being marketed as a crucial territorial wedge for economic ascendancy in globally competitive urban areas. Reshaping Toronto's Waterfront analyses how and why 'problem spaces' on the waterfront have become 'opportunity spaces' during the past hundred and fifty years. Contributors with diverse areas of expertise illuminate processes of development and provide fresh analyses of the intermingling of nature and society as they appear in both physical forms and institutional arrangements, which define and produce change. Reshaping Toronto's Waterfront is a fundamental resource for understanding the waterfront as a dynamic space that is neither fully tamed nor wholly uncontrolled.
