Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries men speculated about the process of gastric digestion, but Iate in the eighteenth and early in the nineteenth centuries physiologists, both physicians and laymen, began to accumulate experimental evidence about its nature. At the same time, others discovered that the stomach is capable of secreting a strong mineral acid, and the questions of how that secretion is produced and how it is controlled became enduring problems. A Iittle later, the discovery that an acid extract of dead gastric mucosa is capable of digesting meat put the study of gastric secretion and digestion on a firm mechanistic foundation. From that time to the present, physi ologists have assiduously investigated gastric secretion and digestion, with the result that knowledge ofthose topics is as comprehensive and penetrating as isthat about other physiological processes. In addition, that knowledge is the basis of discrimi nating and effective clinical practice. I have described the experimental study of gastric secretion and digestion for two reasons. The firstisthat the successes and some ofthe failures ofphysiologists over two centuries are important parts of intellectual history that deserve to be recorded. The second is that some of those who use the accumulated knowledge every day are curious about its genesis. I assume that my readers have the technical knowledge to understand what I have written. If my account does not fully satisfy their curiosity, I have provided references that will open the path to further study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers one of the most comprehensive reviews in the field of gastrointestinal (GI) physiology, guiding readers on a journey through the complete digestive tract, while also highlighting related organs and glandular systems. It is not solely limited to organ system physiology, and related disciplines like anatomy and histology, but also examines the molecular and cellular processes that keep the digestive system running. As such, the book provides extensive information on the molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, and system levels of functions in the GI system. Chapters on the roles of the gut as an endocrine, exocrine and neural organ, as well as its microbiome functions, broaden readers’ understanding of the multi-organ networks in the human body. To help illustrate the interconnections between the physiological concepts, principles and clinical presentations, it outlines clinical examples such as pathologies that link basic science with clinical practice in special “clinical correlates” sections. Covering both traditional and contemporary topics, it is a valuable resource for biomedical students, as well as healthcare and scientific professionals.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemical Investigation of Gastric and Intestinal Diseases: By the Aid of Test Meals It is practically impossible to diagnose many of the functional diseases of the stomach from the symptoms alone, and the clini cian who does not call chemical tests to his aid is bound to mass together under one or another heading, various functional dis orders which ought to be kept entirely separate. Thanks to the introduction of the stomach-tube, one is now able to obtain the contents of the stomach, and find out what Chemical changes, if any, are present, thus enabling one to draw conclusions as to the sub-division of the various functional diseases of the stomach. In organic diseases of the stomach, chemical analysis is not nearly so important, since in these there are several signs and symptoms which point in one. Direction or the other. It must be understood that the results obtained from the chemi cal analysis of the gastric contents can never alone be sufficient for the formation of a definite diagnosis of the various forms Of gastric dyspepsia; each case has to be carefully considered in connection with the various symptoms and physical Signs present, and the stomach analysis is merely to be regarded as an aid in making a more careful and detailed diagnosis. The idea that any one chemical factor is pathognomonic of any Special condition must also be at once put aside; The diagnosis of carcinoma of the stomach from the absence of free hydrochloric acid in the gastric secretions has now to be regarded as non-conclusive, unless the history and physical Signs support the diagnosis. This is analogous to the fact that the presence of albumen in the urine is not pathognomonic of Bright's disease unless one has negatived its attribution to cardiac, digestive, or other causes, and has, in support of the Bright's disease theory, various other symptoms with possibly other chemical results, which point in that direction. The fact that albumen is not pathognomonic of Bright's disease does not, however, detract from the value of the urine analysis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experiments and Observations on the Gastric Juice, and the Physiology of Digestion The reasons which have induced me to reprint the present work from the American original, are, 1st, A strong sense of its inherent importance and of the numerous applications which may be made of the facts and principles developed in it to the prevention and cure of disease; 2dly, Its comparative inaccessibility to the European physiologist from the difficulty which still exists of procuring it on this side of the Atlantic; and, lastly, An earnest desire that the author should obtain that credit which is unquestionably due to his disinterested and indefatigable labours. The value of Dr Beaumont's experiments consists partly in the admirable opportunities for observation which he enjoyed, and partly in the candid and truth-seeking spirit in which all his inquiries seem to have been conducted.
