Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of England in the Lives of Englishmen, Vol. 1 The whole of the southern coast of England, from Kent to the Land's End, appears to have been peopled in this way before either the more northern or the midland districts Of the island had been pene trated. As the descendants of the original settlers, however, increased in number, and new bands of emigrants successively arrived from the mother-country, the back woods were gradually cleared, til], at last, the whole island had become inhabited. There is abundant evidence that this result had taken place long before the commencement of the Christian era. During this interval, also, a great part of Ireland had been taken possession Of, and peopled, no doubt, from the neighbour ing coasts of the west of England. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Richard Green was an English historian. He was the author of seven books although History of the English People was arguably one of his finest. Although Green began his career as a clergyman, he was always an enthusiastic student of history. Ultimately he decided to change his chosen profession, quit the clergy and became the librarian at Lembeth. Writing history was always part of his plan and he began straightaway to bringing those plans to fruition. When he undertook the project that resulted in this book, he began with the thought in mind that there were not enough published and reputable materials about the history of England. "For the conquest of Britain by the English our authorities are scant and imperfect." Therefore, he took it upon himself to complete a comprehensive and well sourced document about English history. While completed later in his life, this book (along with his last of his books), were written during a period of ill health. Due to this, his wife, Alice Stopford, helped complete his writing when he was too ill to continue. That means that some of this book is written by her hand as well which makes it an interesting exploration of England and perhaps the first one written by both a man and a woman (although she is not given author credit). Only the reader can determine if Green was truly successful in his quest to achieve a complete work (with verifiable and strong sources) about the life and history of the English People. His work stands the test of time as a monument to the life and dedication of one man, relentless in his quest to pursue his dreams and ultimately make the world a better place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the English People, Vol. 1 The Short History was the first book which distinguished the great part played in the history of the English people by the burghers of the towns, and it still remains the only history where the fight of those little scattered communities is pictured in its true significance and given its just place in the developement of the national life. Since, in Mr. Green's own words, the mill by the stream, the tolls in the market-place, the brasses of its burghers in the church, the names of its streets, the lingering memory of its guilds, the mace of its mayor, tell us more of the past of England than the spire of Sarum or the martyrdom of Canterbury (intr. Xviii), there will be found here the circuit of ancient walls and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of England, Vol. 1 of 2 Britain, and in wmch their political and social life took the form which it still retains. The centuries of administrative organization which stretch from Ecgberht to Edward the First, the age of full national development which extends from Edward's day to our own, only become intelligible to us when we have fully grasped this age of national formation. I cannot but feel, therefore, that it is no slight misfortune that such a period should remain comparatively unknown, and that its struggles, which were in reality the birth-throes of our national life, should be still to most English men, as they were to Milton, mere battles of kites and of crows. This book was released on 2002 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry of Huntingdon's narrative covers one of the most exciting and bloody periods in English history: the Norman Conquest and its aftermath. He tells of the decline of the Old English kingdom, the victory of the Normans at the Battle of Hastings, and the establishment of Norman rule. His accounts of the kings who reigned during his lifetime--William II, Henry I, and Stephen--contain unique descriptions of people and events. Henry tells how promiscuity, greed, treachery, and cruelty produced a series of disasters, rebellions, and wars. Interwoven with memorable and vivid battle-scenes are anecdotes of court life, the death and murder of nobles, and the first written record of Cnut and the waves and the death of Henry I from a surfeit of lampreys. Diana Greenway's translation of her definitive Latin text has been revised for this edition.
