Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Education in Missouri, the Essential Facts Concerning the History and Organization of Missouri's Schools This volume is presented with the hope that it may serve to bring about a better understanding and appreciation of Missouri Schools. It is also hoped that it will help in the solution of our educational problems. It is believed that teachers and school officers may read with some profit the vital facts concerning the history, growth and present organization of our schools. No effort has been made to exhaust the subject, because the author has been interested in setting out the essential facts in the history and organization of the schools of the State, consequently no effort has been made to give an elaborate or detailed treatment of the vast body of material available. The material has been selected with some care from many sources; the laws relating to schools, the Reports of the State Superintendents, the files of old School Journals, the published histories of the various institutions in the State, the catalogues of the important Normal Schools, Colleges, etc., the published reports of City systems and private letters. No detailed reference list has been offered largely because the books would not be available for the general reader, and the usual footnote has been purposely avoided. No statement of serious import has been made without some documentary authority for it, and the author has quoted from the various sources mentioned above with great freedom.
