Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Booksellers, the Old and the New Istory has been aptly termed the essence of innumerable biographies; and this surely justifies us in the selection of our title but in inditing a volume to be issued in a cheap and popular form, it was manifestly impossible to trace the careers of all the eminent members ancient and, modern, of a Trade so widely extended had we, indeed, possessed all possible leisure for research, every available material, and a space thoroughly unlimited, it is most probable that the result would have been distinguished chiefly for its bulk, tediousness, and monotony. It was resolved, therefore, in the first planning of the volume, to primarily trace the origin and growth of the Book selling and Publishing Trades up to a comparatively modern period; and then to select, for fuller treat ment, the most typical English representatives of each one of the various branches into which a natural division of labour had subdivided the whole. And, by this plan, it is believed that, while some firms at present growing into eminence may have been omitted, or have received but scant acknowledgment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Booksellers' League: A History of Its Formation and Ten Years of Its Work Before The Booksellers' League was called into existence, in 1894, the booktrade held a unique position among the trades of the United States in that it lacked organization of any kind. While even its allied branches - the stationers, printers and bookbinders - had combined for defensive as well as offensive action, and to bring its individual members into closer fellowship, socially, the members of the booktrade, with a strange fatality, chose to remain separate individuals, every one for himself; indeed, it almost seemed as though each individual member of the booktrade strove to keep as far as possible apart from his associates. When on the occasion of the death of this or that leading member of the trade, some of his confreres, for once deferring to convention, stood about his coffin, it was frequently found that but few of them had ever looked upon his face before.
