Book excerpt: Built in 1833, Edwards Place is Springfield's last surviving link to the days of its prairie beginnings. From 1843-1909 it was home to the Benjamin S. Edwards family. As social leaders in 19th century Springfield, the Edwards family hosted Abraham Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas, Ulysses S. Grant, and other political luminaries. In 1913, Edwards Place became the gallery of the Springfield Art Association, welcoming leading artistic lights such as Gutzon Borglum and Laredo Taft. And in 2014, it underwent a full-scale restoration of its first floor, during which discoveries were made, decades-old mysteries were solved, and the splendor of its antebellum heyday was revived. Magnificently illustrated with period and contemporary photographs, Edwards Place: a Springfield treasure chronicles the saga of the oldest surviving house in Springfield, the people who lived and loved and lost within its walls, and the labor of love that restored it to its original grandeur.

Book Synopsis Crime, Shame and Reintegration by : John Braithwaite
Download or read book Crime, Shame and Reintegration written by John Braithwaite and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-03-23 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime, Shame and Reintegration is a contribution to general criminological theory. Its approach is as relevant to professional burglary as to episodic delinquency or white collar crime. Braithwaite argues that some societies have higher crime rates than others because of their different processes of shaming wrongdoing. Shaming can be counterproductive, making crime problems worse. But when shaming is done within a cultural context of respect for the offender, it can be an extraordinarily powerful, efficient and just form of social control. Braithwaite identifies the social conditions for such successful shaming. If his theory is right, radically different criminal justice policies are needed - a shift away from punitive social control toward greater emphasis on moralizing social control. This book will be of interest not only to criminologists and sociologists, but to those in law, public administration and politics who are concerned with social policy and social issues.
Download or read book Duncan Phyfe written by Peter M. Kenny and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2011 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Duncan Phyfe (1770-1854), known during his lifetime as the "United States Rage," to this day remains America's best-known cabinetmaker. Establishing his reputation as a purveyor of luxury by designing high-quality furniture for New York's moneyed elite, Phyfe would come to count among his clients some of the nation's wealthiest and most storied families. This richly illustrated volume covers the full chronological sweep of the craftsman's distinguished career, from his earliest furniture-- which bears the influence of his 18th-century British predecessors Thomas Sheraton and Thomas Hope--to his late simplified designs in the Grecian Plain. More than sixty works by Phyfe and his workshop are highlighted, including rarely seen pieces from private collections and several newly discovered documented works. Additionally, essays by leading scholars bring to light new information on Phyfe's life, his workshop production, and his roster of illustrious patrons. What unfolds is the story of Phyfe's remarkable transformation from a young immigrant craftsman to an accomplished master cabinetmaker and an American icon."--Publisher's website.
