Book excerpt: Historical and Descriptive Narrative of Twenty Years' Residence in South America in three volumes is a travel narrative by a British explorer William Bennet Stevenson who spent many years in Chile, Ecuador, Peru and Colombia, in early 19th century. About 1803 he landed on the coast of Chile, which at that time was inhabited only by indigenous people. His intention was to travel through the country, but he was detained a prisoner. He was conveyed to Peru, where he was permitted to reside in the town and to make excursions into the adjoining provinces. On the outbreak of the Ecuadorian War of Independence, Stevenson joined the insurgents, and he also served in the Chilean War of Independence, taking part in many naval operations. Upon his return he published the results of his American experiences. His goal in writing this book was to bring European readers closer to the distant continent which has undergone remarkable changes in its political and religious life. The book is of great value for the period of the Spanish American wars of independence, and he used his unique opportunities for observation to advantage.

This has given rise to multiple hybrid formations over time emerging in the clash of multiple cultures, languages and religions within and between great empires (Roman, Islamic, Hispano-Catholic), each with expansionist policies leading to wars, huge territorial gains and population movements. This long history makes Hispanophone culture itself a supranational, trans-imperial one long before we witness its various national cultures being refashioned as a result of the transnational processes associated with globalization today. Indeed, the Spanish language we recognise today was ‘transnational’ long before it was ever the foundation of a single nation state. In this ethnography of the globalization process, Lynn A. Meisch looks at how participation in the global economy has affected Otavalo identity and culture since the 1970s. Drawing on nearly thirty years of fieldwork, she covers many areas of Otavalo life, including the development of weaving and music as business enterprises, the increase in tourism to Otavalo, the diaspora of Otavalo merchants and musicians around the world, changing social relations at home, the growth of indigenous political power, and current debates within the Otavalo community over preserving cultural identity in the face of globalization and transnational migration.
