Book Synopsis A Grammar of Modern Breton by : Ian J. Press
Download or read book A Grammar of Modern Breton written by Ian J. Press and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-05-12 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series builds an extensive collection of high quality descriptions of languages around the world. Each volume offers a comprehensive grammatical description of a single language together with fully analyzed sample texts and, if appropriate, a word list and other relevant information which is available on the language in question. There are no restrictions as to language family or area, and although special attention is paid to hitherto undescribed languages, new and valuable treatments of better known languages are also included. No theoretical model is imposed on the authors; the only criterion is a high standard of scientific quality.

Download or read book Word-Formation written by Peter O. Müller and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 829 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook comprises an in-depth presentation of the state of the art in word-formation. The five volumes contain 207 articles written by leading international scholars. The XVI chapters of the handbook provide the reader, in both general articles and individual studies, with a wide variety of perspectives: word-formation as a linguistic discipline (history of science, theoretical concepts), units and processes in word-formation, rules and restrictions, semantics and pragmatics, foreign word-formation, language planning and purism, historical word-formation, word-formation in language acquisition and aphasia, word-formation and language use, tools in word-formation research. The final chapter comprises 74 portraits of word-formation in the individual languages of Europe and offers an innovative perspective. These portraits afford the first overview of this kind and will prove useful for future typological research. This handbook will provide an essential reference for both advanced students and researchers in word-formation and related fields within linguistics.

Book Synopsis Complex Adpositions in European Languages by : Benjamin Fagard
Download or read book Complex Adpositions in European Languages written by Benjamin Fagard and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much attention has been devoted to simple nominal relators, especially prepositions and case markers, complex nominal relators have not yet been the focus of a systematic and cross-linguistic study. The chapters of this volume provide not only a working definition of such constructions, but also a description of complex adpositions and other complex nominal relators in a variety of European languages, both Indo-European and non-Indo-European, including some languages for which this phenomenon had received little attention, such as Breton and Albanian. Building on synchronic and diachronic corpus-based investigations, the authors show commonalities and specificities of these linguistic items across languages, trying to explain why and how they emerged. The research presented in this volume confirms the wide-spread use of complex adpositions in Europe, and the data reviewed in the final discussion suggests it might be the same in other parts of the world, as well. This book thus offers not only detailed descriptions of complex nominal relators in fifteen languages, but also indications of what to look for in other languages, and how to distinguish between a syntactically free sequence and a genuine complex nominal relator.
Book Synopsis The Celtic Languages by : Martin J. Ball
Download or read book The Celtic Languages written by Martin J. Ball and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 959 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Celtic Languages describes in depth all the Celtic languages from historical, structural and sociolinguistic perspectives with individual chapters on Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Manx, Welsh, Breton and Cornish. This second edition has been thoroughly revised to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the modern Celtic languages and their current sociolinguistic status along with complete descriptions of the historical languages. This comprehensive volume is arranged in four parts. The first part offers a description of the typological aspects of the Celtic languages followed by a scene setting historical account of the emergence of these languages. Chapters devoted to Continental Celtic, Old and Middle Irish, and Old and Middle Welsh follow. Parts two and three are devoted to linguistic descriptions of the contemporary languages. Part two has chapters on Irish, Scots Gaelic and Manx, while Part three covers Welsh, Breton and Cornish. Part four is devoted to the sociolinguistic situation of the four contemporary Celtic languages and a final chapter describes the status of the two revived languages Cornish and Manx. With contributions from a variety of scholars of the highest reputation, The Celtic Languages continues to be an invaluable tool for both students and teachers of linguistics, especially those with an interest in typology, language universals and the unique sociolinguistic position which the Celtic languages occupy. Dr Martin J. Ball is Hawthorne-BoRSF Endowed Professor, and Director of the Hawthorne Research Center, at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Dr Ball has over 120 academic publications. Among his books are The Use of Welsh, Mutation in Welsh, and Welsh Phonetics. Dr Nicole Müller is Hawthorne-BoRSF Endowed Professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Among her books are Mutation in Welsh, and Agents in Early Irish and Early Welsh.
Book Synopsis Theory and Practice of Romance Etymology by : Yakov Malkiel
Download or read book Theory and Practice of Romance Etymology written by Yakov Malkiel and published by Variorum Publishing. This book was released on 1989 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume opens with two pieces, hitherto unpublished, in which Professor Malkiel sets out his views on Romance etymology and its history. He provides a detailed analysis of the principles, even prejudices, whether explicit or implicit, which have directed scholars in their enquiries, and argues that the goal should be a discipline integrated with others in related fields, and avoiding reliance on any one method of research. He insists, moreover, that linguistic variation is directly affected by social and cultural factors: the transformation of Latin into the Romance languages must be studied in relation to the break-up of the Roman world and the formation of the medieval and modern peoples of 'Latin' Europe. The following articles, now with an extensive additional commentary, reflect the author's move towards a more experimental etymology, and provide case-studies of particular words and word-complexes and their historical and cultural context. As an example, one article asks whether it is any coincidence that the Spanish word for a hog, marrano, was also used of the crypto-Jews who, though formally converted to Christianity, kept up some Jewish practices.
