Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated book offers a wide-ranging overview of the greatest archaeological sites and discoveries from ancient Greece. The contributors--a veritable who's who of the most venerable names in Greek archaeology--include both those who have excavated at the sites in question and scholars who have spent a lifetime studying the monuments about which they write. Presented here are the legendary sites of ancient Greece, including the Athenian Acropolis, Olympia, Delphi, Schliemann's Mycenae, and the Athenian Agora; the most iconic sculptures in the Greek world, such as the Aphrodite of Melos and the Nike of Samothrace; and several fascinating chapters on underwater archaeology discussing the Kyrenia and Uluburun shipwrecks and the astonishing bronze masterpieces raised from the sea. This is the first book to bring together the archaeological legacy of ancient Greece in a concise and accessible way while still preserving the excitement of discovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek Archaeology This manual is intended primarily for the use of students who expect to pursue the study of Greek Archaeology seriously, but it may also be of use to those who desire only a general knowledge of the subject. Neither the serious student at the beginning of his course of study nor the general reader should be disturbed by a discussion of conflicting theories. Matters concerning which some degree of certainty has not been attained have, therefore, been in great measure omitted. The attempt has been made to avoid a very detailed treatment of the subject matter, though in the discussion of technical processes, especially those of architecture, it was necessary to include a good many details, chiefly because a knowledge of them is needful to the student and is not easily accessible. Few entire categories of works of art have (like the carvings in ivory) been completely omitted, though some (e. g. terracotta reliefs) have been treated very briefly, since the size of the book was limited. In the chapter on Vases, footnotes have been used more freely than elsewhere, owing to the fact that the material for illustration and detailed study is scattered and not always easily found. The chapter on Architecture is the work of Mr. Gorham Phillips Stevens, formerly for two years Fellow in Architecture at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, on the grant of the Carnegie Institution. Its historical and descriptive parts are based largely on portions of Borrmann's Die Baukunst des Altertums und des Islam im Mittelalter, and the chapter has been revised by Mr. Fowler. The chapters on Vases and Painting are by Mr. Wheeler, and he has supervised the preparation of the illustrations. Richard Neer's clear chronological narrative takes readers through the artistic developments in Greek culture from the Minoans to the Roman conquest. We learn about how art was made and used, and how it can offer a window into the changing social and cultural world of ancient Greece.Still the most visually led book on the subject, the text is supported with highquality photographs, reconstructions, maps and plans that help build a vibrant picture of the ancient world. Each chapter begins with a chronology and map, situating the reader in time and place as we follow the development of an ancient visual culture that still influences us today.

Book excerpt: A Companion that examines together two pivotal periods of Greek archaeology and offers a rich analysis of early Greek culture A Companion to the Archaeology of Early Greece and the Mediterranean offers an original and inclusive review of two key periods of Greek archaeology, which are typically treated separately—the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. It presents an in-depth exploration of the society and material culture of Greece and the Mediterranean, from the 14th to the early 7th centuries BC. The two-volume companion sets Aegean developments within their broader geographic and cultural context, and presents the wide-ranging interactions with the Mediterranean. The companion bridges the gap that typically exists between Prehistoric and Classical Archaeology and examines material culture and social practice across Greece and the Mediterranean. A number of specialists examine the environment and demography, and analyze a range of textual and archaeological evidence to shed light on socio-political and cultural developments. The companion also emphasizes regionalism in the archaeology of early Greece and examines the responses of different regions to major phenomena such as state formation, literacy, migration and colonization. Comprehensive in scope, this important companion: Outlines major developments in the two key phases of early Greece, the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age Includes studies of the geography, chronology and demography of early Greece Explores the development of early Greek state and society and examines economy, religion, art and material culture Sets Aegean developments within their Mediterranean context Written for students, and scholars interested in the material culture of the era, ACompanion to the Archaeology of Early Greece and the Mediterranean offers a comprehensive and authoritative guide that bridges the gap between the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. 2020 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Winner!
