Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook for Travellers in Japan: Including the Whole Empire From Saghalien to Formosa This edition of the Handbook has been revised through out with diligent care, - a revision amounting to the rewriting of several routes, notably those describing portions of the West and North-West Coast of the Main Island, various mountain ascents, and the interior of Yezo. Even such favourite summer resorts as Karuizawa and Yumoto, and such classic ground as the old capital Kyoto, have been practically redone, and numberless minor changes all over the country, arising from the extension of railways and electric trams, incorporated in the new text. Special attention has been devoted to the maps, and to a verification of the merits of the inns recommended. At the same time, it has been borne in mind that picturesque "Old Japan," so far as it still survives, is what the majority of intelligent persons come out to see. The total result, it is hoped, will supply travellers with a vade-mecum which, while retaining all needful information concerning temples, art treasures, legends, flower festivals, and the other charming peculiarities of this fascinating land, is at the same time thoroughly practical and up to date. The compilers' thanks are due to various correspondents for information courteously supplied, more especially to Rev. Walter Weston, Dr. E. Papellier, J. Stürcke, Esq., J. Orange, Esq., and A. E. Wileman, Esq. To Edward Beart, Esq., they are indebted for valuable assistance in the correction of the proof-sheets. Suggestions or corrections will be welcome at any time. The expense is such as a man and wife desiring to see Japan under the most comfortable conditions must necessarily meet, when stop ping at the best hotels or inns, travelling first class upon railways and steamships, and in other ways not attempting the close economy sometimes practised by travellers. The writer, with his wife, having devoted exactly four months to the trip, finds that - including cost of through tickets from Boston to Yokohama and return each), sleeping-cars, dining-cars, living expenses at hotels and inns, wines and cigars, entertainment of friends, railroad, steamship, and Jinrikisha expenses, wages and transportation of Japanese attendant, donations to servants, and, in short, everything but articles purchased the entire cost is under gold; or, to be exact, It should however be borne in mind that practically as much may be seen, and at less expense, by those who are content to accept more humble accommodations.
