Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Life and the Rural School This volume is addressed to the men and women who have at heart the interests of rural life and the rural school. I have tried to avoid deeply speculative theories on the one hand, and distressingly practical details on the other; and have addressed myself chiefly to the intelligent individual everywhere - to the farmer and his wife, to the teachers of rural schools, to the public spirited school boards, individually and collectively, and to the leaders of rural communities and of social centers generally. I have tried to avoid the two extremes which Guizot says are always to be shunned, viz.: that of the visionary theorist and that of the libertine practician. The former is analogous to a blank cartridge, and the latter to the mire of a swamp or the entangled underbrush of a thicket. The legs of one's theories (as Lincoln said of those of a man) should be long enough to reach the earth; and yet they must be free to move upon the solid ground of fact and experience. Details must always be left to the person who is to do the work, whether it be that of the teacher, of the farmer, or of the school officer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching in Rural Schools The United States Census Bureau classifies as living under rural conditions all persons living in the Open country and in towns and villages having less that 2500 inhabitants. On this basis, according to the census of 1910, per cent Of the population of the United States was classed as rural, and the figures probably have not changed materially since that date. In the last printed report of the United States Commissioner of Education it was stated that, during the preceding year, per cent of the children enrolled in the public schools of the United States were enrolled in schools classified by the Census Bureau as rural, while of the teachers employed, 60 per cent were employed in these rural communities. Approximately eighteen million children were enrolled in these same schools, and about 95 per cent of these were in the elementary grades. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural School, Its Methods and Management Besides school management, the rural teacher needs to know better methods, especially in primary subjects. Realizing this deficiency, a few chapters in primary methods, by Miss Stone, have been added, which are adapted to the work of country schools. Out of an experience of many years as a teacher in rural, village and county high schools, and as a teacher of teachers, have the pages of this book been written; and it is offered to the public with the hope that it may add its mite to the improvement of rural schools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural School Supervision Sir: In the early history of this country, and of each of the States, when the population was sparse and communities widely separated, each school district and each school had an independent existence, with little or no relation to any other school or district or any larger unit. As population became more dense, as communities coalesced, as appropriations and expenditures for schools became larger, and as the larger units of county and State began to feel an interest in and responsibility for the education of the children of all their separate communities, the need for State and county officers for business administration was felt. Later still, the demand for efficiency in the schools and for the best possible use of money expended for schools and of the time of the children in school gave rise to a demand for expert supervision by men and women competent to give to all teachers, and especially to young and inexperienced teachers, help in those phases of their work in which they need it most. As a result, State, county, district, and township superintendents are now chosen with reference to their knowledge of teaching more than formerly; and in many States they are given the assistance of special supervisors. So valuable have been the results of the work of these expert supervisors in those places where it has been tried under favorable conditions that there is now a general desire for information on the subject. I therefore recommend for publication as a bulletin of the Bureau of Education the accompanying manuscript transmitted herewith on Rural School Supervision, prepared at my request by Katherine M. Cook and A. C. Monahan of the Rural Education Division of this bureau. Respectfully submitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Education: A Complete Course of Study for Modern Rural Schools The average reader omits the preface of a book and seldom reads the appendix. Hence, much of what might properly be placed in these divisions has been included in the regular chapters. Most books of this kind are of very general nature. Our purpose is to supplement those already available with more definite suggestions and outlines for programs and courses of study not only for the academic work, but also for the so-called industrial work, some of which is now demanded in nearly every community. During the last few years education has assumed new aspects, which are reflected from the courses of study. The answers of students and parents as to what constitutes an education and why certain courses are pursued are interest ing. Usually the laboring man wishes his children to be educated so that they will not have to work as hard as he had. The well-to-do desire education for culture and social distinction. Others see the vocational side only. Too often the teacher's idea is to cram the students' memories with facts from books. Without further discussion we might define education as preparation for life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural School Management For many years the graduates of normal schools and colleges of education have turned from the rural schools toward the more pleasant surroundings of the towns and cities. In the towns the salaries are usually better, the living conditions are more agreeable, the materials and equipment of education are more adequate, and the prestige of the teachers' positions is increased. With the unparalleled growth of city school systems demanding an increasing supply of teachers from year to year, the normal schools have been taxed to the limit of their ability in supplying the demand. As a natural outcome of these conditions the machinery of the institutions is directed primarily toward the training of students who will be able to work efficiently in graded school systems. This has left the schools of the country and the village without an adequately trained teaching corps. At first, they depended upon those residents of the country, mature and immature, who could show evidence of knowledge chiefly gained in country schools, sufficient to obtain a teachers certificate. Later, when the high schools, with the aid of the state and because of a quickening of interest among the citizens of towns and cities, grew in numbers, and became more accessible to children of the rural districts, high school graduates sought their teaching apprenticeship in country schools. That the best schools are found in our towns and cities is due largely to the fact that they have had close professional supervision. In urban' communities this has been easily supplied; but the schools of our rural districts, unlike those of our towns and cities, are widely separated: in one county moveover, they number as many as one hundred or one hundred and fifty; yet the entire burden of supervision has been placed on the should ers of the county Superintendent of education.
