Book Synopsis Berenike and the Ancient Maritime Spice Route by : Steven E. Sidebotham
Download or read book Berenike and the Ancient Maritime Spice Route written by Steven E. Sidebotham and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legendary overland silk road was not the only way to reach Asia for ancient travelers from the Mediterranean. During the Roman Empire’s heyday, equally important maritime routes reached from the Egyptian Red Sea across the Indian Ocean. The ancient city of Berenike, located approximately 500 miles south of today’s Suez Canal, was a significant port among these conduits. In this book, Steven E. Sidebotham, the archaeologist who excavated Berenike, uncovers the role the city played in the regional, local, and “global” economies during the eight centuries of its existence. Sidebotham analyzes many of the artifacts, botanical and faunal remains, and hundreds of the texts he and his team found in excavations, providing a profoundly intimate glimpse of the people who lived, worked, and died in this emporium between the classical Mediterranean world and Asia.

Book Synopsis A History of the Jews and Judaism in the Second Temple Period, Volume 2 by : Lester L. Grabbe
Download or read book A History of the Jews and Judaism in the Second Temple Period, Volume 2 written by Lester L. Grabbe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of the projected four-volume history of the Second Temple period. It is axiomatic that there are large gaps in the history of the Persian period, but the early Greek period is possibly even less known. This volume brings together all we know about the Jews during the period from Alexander's conquest to the eve of the Maccabaean revolt, including the Jews in Egypt as well as the situation in Judah. Based directly on the primary sources, which are surveyed, the study addresses questions such as administration, society, religion, economy, jurisprudence, Hellenism and Jewish identity. These are discussed in the context of the wider Hellenistic world and its history. A strength of the study is its extensive up-to-date secondary bibliography (approximately one thousand items).

Book Synopsis Corpus Papyrorum Judaicarum by : Noah Hacham
Download or read book Corpus Papyrorum Judaicarum written by Noah Hacham and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The edition collects and presents all papyri and ostraca from the Ptolemaic period, connected to Jews and Judaism, published since 1957. It is a follow-up to the Corpus Papyrorum Judaicarum (= CPJ) of the 1950s and 60s, edited by Victor Tcherikover, which had consisted of three volumes – I devoted to the Ptolemaic period; II to the Early Roman period (until 117 CE); and III to the Late Roman and Byzantine periods. The present book, CPJ vol. IV, is the first in a new trilogy, and is devoted to the Ptolemaic period. The present and upcoming volumes supplement the original CPJ. They present over 300 papyri that have been published since 1957. They also include papyri in languages other than Greek (Hebrew, Aramaic, Demotic), and literary papyri which had not been included in the old CPJ. Aside from quite a number of papyri in these categories, the present volume (of over 100 documents) includes 21 papyri from Herakleopolis in Middle-Egypt that record the existence of a Jewish self-ruling body – the politeuma. These papyri put an end to a long-standing dispute over whether such a Jewish institution had ever existed in Egypt.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There seems to be no brief English equivalent for the concept of a +Berichtigungsliste; . This demotic +Berichtigungsliste; collects and critically presents corrections and supplements to editions of demotic documentary texts: papyri, ostraka, inscriptions, mummy labels, graffiti - everything demotic that was not clearly written as a secular or religious literary composition. We have added all the information we have found concerning inventory numbers and photographs as well as republications of the texts in question which the scholar working with these texts might like to have. Although the +Berichtigungsliste; chiefly concerns text editions, be they published in monographs or articles, texts that have been published only in photography or facsimile are also included. The period covered for the publications that have been ransacked for the purpose of our +Berichtigungsliste; is roughly the Twentieth Century: 1900-2000. In subsequent volumes, we intend to extend this time-range into the Nineteenth Century as well as into the future.

Book Synopsis A History of the Ptolemaic Empire by : Günther Hölbl
Download or read book A History of the Ptolemaic Empire written by Günther Hölbl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling narrative provides the only comprehensive guide in English to the rise and decline of Ptolemaic rule in Egypt over three centuries - from the death of Alexander in 323 BC to the tragic deaths of Antony and Cleopatra in 30 BC. The skilful integration of material from a vast array of sources allows the reader to trace the political and religious development of one of the most powerful empires of the ancient eastern Mediterranean. It shows how the success of the Ptolemies was due in part to their adoption of many features of the Egyptian Pharaohs who preceded them - their deification and funding of cults and temples throughout Egypt.
