Download or read book The Victoria and Albert Museum written by Elizabeth James and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 844 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive bibliography and exhibition chronology of the world's greatest museum of the decorative arts and design. The Victoria and Albert Museum, or South Kensington Museum as it used to be known, was founded by the British Government in 1852, out of the proceeds from the Great Exhibition of 1851. Like the Exhibition, it aimed to improve the expertise of designers, and the taste of the public, by exposing them to examples of good design from all countries and periods. 2,500 publications have to date been produced by, for, or in association with the V&A. The National Art Library, which is part of the Museum, has prepared this detailed catalogue, supplemented by a secondary list of 500 other books closely related to the V&A. The 1,500 exhibitions and displays recorded include those held in the main Museum and at its branches, the Bethnal Green Museum (now the National Museum of Childhood) and the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden, and additionally those it has organized at external venues, in Great Britain and abroad. The exhibitions and publications are fully cross-referenced, and there are name, title and subject indexes to the whole work, as well as an explanatory introduction.

Book Synopsis The Art of Carol Janeway by : Victoria Jenssen
Download or read book The Art of Carol Janeway written by Victoria Jenssen and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-08-10 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of Carol Janeway portrays the exotic life and artistic career of a woman whose commercial success as a tile decorator and ceramist in New York in the 1940s and later retirement due to lead poisoning offer a fascinating study. Victoria Jenssen presents the career of yet another previously unrecognized woman artist, Carol Janeway (1913-1989), who was an entrepreneur and a single mother. While Janeway often exhibited, twice at the MoMA for example, few museums today own Janeway ceramics. This book will appeal to those interested in the following artists and topics: Georg Jensen Inc. and Frederik Lunning, Jens Risom, Ossip Zadkine, Maya Deren, Leo Lerman and Richard Hunter, Harold Ambellan, Tusnelda Sanders, underglaze ceramic decoration both freehand and printed, Lisette Model, Catherine Yarrow, Ed Wiener, Madeleine Turner, Stalin’s Moscow of the early 1930s, syndicated woman journalists of the 1940s, Ralph Ingersoll and Charles Marsh, Josiah Wedgwood & Sons, Lou Block, Doris Lee, Walter Duranty, Eliot Janeway, Julien Levy’s The Imagery of Chess, preservation of Greenwich Village. Among several celebrity owners, Marilyn Monroe owned five Janeway doorknobs.
Book Synopsis 5000 Years of Tiles by : Hans Van Lemmen
Download or read book 5000 Years of Tiles written by Hans Van Lemmen and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, full-color exploration of tile art and production worldwide, from earliest times to the present day. The book is both an authoritative work of reference and a visual delight, ranging from ancient Greece, where the first fired roof tiles date from as early as the third millennium BC, to twentieth-century Mexico. Along the way we encounter stunning examples of the tiler's art: the enormous English medieval floor pavements from Byland Abbey and Clarendon Palace; figural tiles from China, intended to adorn roofs and ward off evil; the famous Iznik tiles from the Islamic world, with their richly decorative patterns; the highly stylised ceramic tiles of the Arts and Crafts movement; and the tiles created by some of the finest ceramic artists and potters of the twenty-first century. Placing the tiles firmly in their historical and cultural context, the book highlights both continuity and diversity, the dissemination of techniques and designs, and how tile art in one time and place has inspired and rejuvenated those in others. Tiles are also studied in terms of function as well as form, and the full range of architectural and practical purposes for which they have been used - from floors to roofs, stoves to bathrooms, cathedrals to metro stations - will be explored, along with the various techniques employed to create such versatile pieces. 5000 Years of Tiles is the essential, most comprehensive single volume for anyone interested in the ceramic, decorative, and architectural arts.
