Book excerpt: The second edition of Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry: A Practical Guide follows the highly successful first edition by F.G. Kitson, B.S. Larsen, and C.N. McEwen (1996), which was designed as an indispensible resource for GC/MS practitioners regardless of whether they are a novice or well experienced. The Fundamentals section has been extensively reworked from the original edition to give more depth of an understanding of the techniques and science involved with GC/MS. Even with this expansion, the original brevity and simple didactic style has been retained. Information on chromatographic peak deconvolution has been added along with a more in-depth understanding of the use of mass spectral databases in the identification of unknowns. Since the last edition, a number of advances in GC inlet systems and sample introduction techniques have occurred, and they are included in the new edition. Other updates include a discussion on fast GC and options for combining GC detectors with mass spectrometry. The section regarding GC Conditions, Derivatization, and Mass Spectral Interpretation of Specific Compound Types has the same number of compound types as the original edition, but the information in each section has been expanded to not only explain some of the spectra but to also explain why certain fragmentations take place. The number of Appendices has been increased from 12 to 17. The Appendix on Atomic Masses and Isotope Abundances has been expanded to provide tools to aid in determination of elemental composition from isotope peak intensity ratios. An appendix with examples on "Steps to follow in the determination of elemental compositions based on isotope peak intensities" has been added. Appendices on whether to use GC/MS or LC/MS, third-party software for use in data analysis, list of information required in reporting GC/MS data, X+1 and X+2 peak relative intensities based on the number of atoms of carbon in an ion, and list of available EI mass spectral databases have been added. Others such as the ones on derivatization, isotope peak patterns for ions with Cl and/or Br, terms used in GC and in mass spectrometry, and tips on setting up, maintaining and troubleshooting a GC/MS system have all been expanded and updated. - Covers the practical instruction necessary for successful operation of GC/MS equipment - Reviews the latest advances in instrumentation, ionization methods, and quantitation - Includes troubleshooting techniques and a variety of additional information useful for the GC/MS practitioner - A true benchtop reference - A guide to a basic understanding of the components of a Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) - Quick References to data interpretation - Ready source for information on new analyses

Book excerpt: Here is the first volume to examine sulfur in fossil fuels from a geochemical perspective. It begins with six introductory chapters that present an overview of the material, historical background, and summaries of the present state of knowledge. Subsequent chapters cover: case studies of specific sedimentary environments; characterization of sulfur in selected coals and petroleums by various methods and techniques; and the major advances in understanding geochemistry at the molecular level. This important volume fills a significant gap in the technical literature and updates the understanding of the chemical processes in geological environments giving rise to sulfur fossil fuels.

Book excerpt: The bibliography which follows represents an effort to provide the active or potential worker in the field of gas chromatography with references to the theory, methodology, and applications of this phase of chemistry. A review of the cited references will afford background for proposed applications, suggest possible solution of a problem, furnish an acquaintance with trends and current work being conducted, and furnish a realization of the possibilities and po tentialities of a technique for the separation, identification, and more recently-preparation of materials. To augment the numerous literature references, titles of papers presented at various scientific meetings are given. Some of these papers have not been published, but they represent a part of the literature of this technique since they indicate the progress and thinking of workers in this field, and provide the opportunity for those with mutual interests to communicate with each other for further details. To afford ready referral for additional information, references are given, when available, to Chemical Abstracts, orto the abstract in the program of the meeting. To accommodate those who may desire microfilm or photostatic copies of the published works, complete pagination is given rather than initial page references. Austin V. By understanding the use of gas cleaning processes, this book will satisfy the needs of engineers and scientists at all levels from academia to the refinery and help them understand the initial various processes. This accessible guide is written for managers, professionals, and technicians as well as graduate students transitioning into the refining industry. Key Features: Describes gas streams produced in a crude oil refinery and from non-refinery feedstocks. Covers gas condensate, gas from biomass, waste and landfill waste, and details categorization by types of contaminants and by removal method. Provides an extensive glossary. Discusses the future of gas cleaning operations and the evolution of the industry. This series of eight books is designed to present descriptions of (1) the development of technologies for a variety of feedstocks (including the viscous feedstocks which are often referred to as heavy feedstocks) utilizing advanced pre-treatment processing and hydrotreating, (2) an analysis of the catalyst deactivation mechanism for developing optimum technologies for processing feedstocks with low reactivity, (3) the development of advanced technologies applicable to the viscous feedstocks, (4) the development of advanced hydrocracking processes for heavy feedstock upgrading, (5) the development of innovative upgrading processes for the viscous feedstocks, and (6) the role of biomass in the future refinery. Furthermore, each book is a stand-alone volume that will bring the reader further up to date and adds more data as well as processing options that may be the processes of the evolving twenty-first century. As the eighth book in the series, this book will focus on the various refinery processes that are used for gas cleaning operations. The target audience includes engineers, scientists, and students who want an update on crude oil processing and the direction of the industry in the next 50 years. Such personnel include (1) professionals in the refining industry, (2) technicians in the refining industry, (3) industry management personnel who need to understand the various processes and the role of these process in producing the desired feedstocks for further processing and the use of solvents to produce saleable products, and (4) the academic staff and graduate students who are moving into the refining industry. Any non-technical readers, with help from the extensive glossary, will also benefit from the series.
