Book excerpt: Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common infectious disease caused by a group of enteroviruses, including coxsackievirus A16 (CA16) and enterovirus 71 (EV71). Over the last decade, many outbreaks of HFMD have been reported in countries of the Western Pacific Region. HFMD caused by EV71 is of particular concern because of the increased number of deaths associated with infection. Until now, there has been little guidance on HFMD caused by EV71. This publication provides practical support for the treatment, prevention and control of HFMD based on the most recent scientific literature and the current understanding and experiences of international experts. It is intended as a resource for both clinicians working with HFMD cases on a regular basis and for public health personnel who are responsible for preventing and responding to outbreaks of HFMD.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a theoretical framework and related technical skills for investigating climate change and its public health consequences and responses with a focus on urban settings, and in particular Hong Kong, a subtropical metropolis in Asia. Specifically, the book examines the impact of climate change on health in terms of mortality, hospital admissions and help-seeking, as well as key response strategies of adaptation and mitigation. Many existing books tend to consider the relationship of climate change and public health as two connected issues divided into various discrete topics. Conversely, this book explicitly applies public health concepts to study the human impact of climate change, for example, by conceptualising climate change impact and its alleviation, mitigation and adaptation in a public health framework. Overall, this volume summarises what is known about climate change and health and ignites further debates in the area, especially for urban subtropical communities from within a wider global perspective. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental health, public health, climate change, urban studies and Asian studies.

Book excerpt: The seventy-second meeting of the WHO Expert Committee on Biological Standardization was held from 19 to 23 October 2020 by WebEx video conferencing due to the restrictions imposed during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The meeting was opened on behalf of the Director-General of WHO by Dr Mariângela Batista Galvão Simão, Assistant Director-General, Access to Medicines and Health Products. Dr Simão welcomed Committee members, meeting participants and observers. Dr Simão began by noting that the Committee had met as recently as August 2020, primarily to address standardization activities related to COVID-19, and that much remains to be learnt about the pandemic. The WHO Solidarity Trial was continuing to facilitate the rapid and robust comparison of potential treatments. Recently published interim results indicated that the four small molecule treatments remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir/ritonavir and interferon had little or no benefit in terms of overall mortality or speed of recovery of hospitalized patients – to date only dexamethasone had proved to be effective against severe COVID-19.
