Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide Manual to the Mammoth Cave of Kentucky The object of the author of this little work is to place before the public, in a popular style, the Chemistry, Geology, and Zoology, of the Mammoth Cave, together with a brief description of all the rooms, avenues, domes, rivers, etc., that are worth the trouble of exploring. Anything like an accurate description of the Cave has not been attempted. In fact, such an effort, from the very nature of the subject, would be attended with failure. The beauty, sublimity and grandeur of the Mammoth Cave, to be appreciated, must be seen. The awful, overpowering silence, the deep darkness, together with a knowledge of the fact that the time which nature required to build this subterranean region is lost in the mists of infinity, produce a combination of emotions which are never experienced in the upper world. The sole object aimed at, has been to furnish to those who have never visited the Cave, some idea of its size and formation, and to those who wish to explore it, a guide-manual, which will do away with the necessity of taking notes, and from which they can select those point, which, should their time be limited, they are most desirous of visiting. Her Lakes, her Rivers, and her Mountains, may be instanced as an attestation of what we say. Greatness and sublimity characterize them all. Poets have sung their praises, tourists have described them in all the eloquence of prose, and painters have labored to illustrate them upon the canvas. They have been famed everywhere. But at the same time, an object of Nature, as sublime as beautiful, and as great as the Andes or the Mississippi, has been comparatively neglected, - we allude to the Mammoth Cave of Kentucky. Little has hitherto been said of it by authors, less done towards familiarizing it to the Million, by the painter. It is with the view of filling up this blank, though it may be imperfectly, that the present work has been undertaken. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a family story of America's most famous cave explorer who was trapped and died in Sand Cave in 1925. That story has been told many times, but never before has the complete life of Floyd Collins been presented. Floyd's younger brother Homer tells how Floyd was fascinated with caves from his childhood, of his discovery of the famous Crystal Cave on the home property, and of the rescue attempts from the viewpoint of a brother so devoted that his extraordinary efforts to save Floyd were rewarded by his being removed from the premises while others inexperienced in working in caves carried on the unsuccessful attempt. It is a warm story of a man whose love in life was exploring caves, a man who endured his grim death with dignity and pride in his vocation."--Page 4 of cover

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial Guide to the Mammoth Cave, Kentucky: A Complete Historic, Descriptive and Scientific Account of the Greatest Subterranean Wonder of the Western World The Mammoth Cave is justly considered the most wonderfully picturesque natural phenomenon; the most extensive and enchanting subterranean cavern on the American Continent, and perhaps in the whole world. The great traveler, close observer and descriptive writer, Bayard Taylor, says of the Mammoth Cave: "It is the greatest natural curiosity that I have ever visited - Niagara not excepted; and he whose expectations are not satisfied by its marvelous avenues, domes and sparry grottoes, must be either a fool or a demi-god." The different avenues, grottoes, and communicating passages, already explored and known to the guides, number 225, and the sum total of their combined length exceeds 150 miles. Many of these avenues are from 20 to 100 feet in width, and from 5 to 40 feet from floor to ceiling. Some of the largest and finest have in some places a firm, smooth and even floor, affording safe and easy passage, while in other places the floor is rough, rocky or cavernous and not altogether free from danger. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mammoth Cave, Kentucky The wonderful work of water of water in sculpturing the surface of the earth is matter of common observation and of common remark. Hill and valley, gorge, canon and waterfall, all have been seen in intimate relation; no rock so hard that it can forever resist the action of the stream; no mountain mass so great that it will not some time yield entirely to water;no valley so deep it may not be graven deeper or even filled to top by the transporting power of running streams. These changes all occur on the surface, and from our familiarity with them fail, often, to engage our close attention. Book Synopsis Twisty Little Passages by : Nick Montfort
Download or read book Twisty Little Passages written by Nick Montfort and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2005-02-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical approach to interactive fiction, as literature and game. Interactive fiction—the best-known form of which is the text game or text adventure—has not received as much critical attention as have such other forms of electronic literature as hypertext fiction and the conversational programs known as chatterbots. Twisty Little Passages (the title refers to a maze in Adventure, the first interactive fiction) is the first book-length consideration of this form, examining it from gaming and literary perspectives. Nick Montfort, an interactive fiction author himself, offers both aficionados and first-time users a way to approach interactive fiction that will lead to a more pleasurable and meaningful experience of it. Twisty Little Passages looks at interactive fiction beginning with its most important literary ancestor, the riddle. Montfort then discusses Adventure and its precursors (including the I Ching and Dungeons and Dragons), and follows this with an examination of mainframe text games developed in response, focusing on the most influential work of that era, Zork. He then considers the introduction of commercial interactive fiction for home computers, particularly that produced by Infocom. Commercial works inspired an independent reaction, and Montfort describes the emergence of independent creators and the development of an online interactive fiction community in the 1990s. Finally, he considers the influence of interactive fiction on other literary and gaming forms. With Twisty Little Passages, Nick Montfort places interactive fiction in its computational and literary contexts, opening up this still-developing form to new consideration.
