Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Graded List of Common Words Difficult to Spell Many thoughtful educators agree on the following points with regard to spelling: - 1. That numerous difficult words are so unusual that one may be pardoned reference to a dictionary on the rare occasions when he needs to use them. It is a waste of a child's mental energy to make him learn to spell words like chameleon and adipocere, as long as he spells which with at and together with an a. 2. That many words are so easy that they may be learned from general reading by the process of unconscious absorption. 3. That words should be arranged "so as not to bring together a number of words of the same combination, and thereby," as W. T. Harris, United States Commissioner of Education, well says, "paralyze the memory, as is too frequently the case in the lists given in spelling-books, which, for example, collect in one lesson the words ending in tion or tain, or ture, or cious, etc., thus giving to the pupil by the first word that is spelled a key to all that follow." Words of the same combination of letters can be learned, no doubt, in a short time, but school examinations show that by this arrangement no lasting impression is made on the mind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quincy Word List: Over Six Thousand of the Commonest English Words Carefully Graded for Elementary Schools Some years ago the author of this Word List, being convinced that spelling learned incidentally, by absorption, was a failure, prepared a list of words for use in the schools under his supervision without any intention of making a spelling book, but repeated calls for the list have induced him to make it available by publishing it. When used according to the author's plan it is not merely a speller but an elementary word study, although not expected to take the place of a dictionary in the upper grades. The list contains over six thousand of the commonest words of our language, graded according to their con tent rather than according to their length, and arranged in groups adapted to a definite plan outlined under Sug gestions to the Teacher. For convenience in finding any desired word of a grade, the words are given in alphabetical order, except, where homonyms and words easily confused have been separated. The list of words for the eighth grade, together with the supplementary list, furnish twice as many words as are given in other grades, for the convenience of schools hav ing nine grades, and also for those teachers who may wish to give longer lessons in this grade. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Era Word Book In preparing a new Speller for the schools, the author has had in mind a collection of words suited to every grade in school. In making this collection, he has had teachers in each grade make lists of words which are likely to be in the pupil's vocabulary, or such as he would be apt to meet in any well graded Reader adapted to his grade, as well as such words as he frequently misspells. Download or read book Six Thousand Common English Words written by R. C. Eldridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-08 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Thousand Common English Words: Their Comparative Frequency and What Can Be Done With Them In placing this book in your hands I ask for it a careful reading and serious consid cration. The ultimate aim of the work is the introduction of a limited vocabulary for universal use. It points out certain facts that show this to be possible and feasible. For such a vocabulary it proposes the selection of words now already in frequent use in some one or more of the principal languages and nations of the world including the Eng lish, this vocabulary so far as it goes to be learned and used throughout the world to the exclusion, in printed matter, and as much as possible in speech, of all other words having the same meanings. It shows that a moderate number of words, wisely selected, would enable any two people understanding them, though they had no other words in common, to converse intelligently on many subjects. The book gives lists of words compiled from current literature, indicating approximately what English words would need to be represented by words of this universal eclectic or polyglot vocabulary, and explains how the results aimed at may be attained. It shows how these necessary words are to be selected from various languages, how they may be universally introduced and how all other words having the same meanings may be excluded from use in all printed matter and in all languages. No difficulties are skipped, and an effort has been made to point out the hard spots. The undertaking is large only because there are immense numbers of people to reach and teach, and because they are scattered over immense territories. It requires no Herculean effort by any individual or any nation. It will take you less than an hour and a half to read this plan, and when you have read it all you will know that the plan is feasible, that it can be carried out and the vocab ulary gradually introduced into the literature of the world without confusion, and that the world will not be turned upside down in the process. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Word Book Let every student have a book. It takes too much time to copy lists from the board; besides, students often copy words as they com mouly misspell them. Do not burden yourself with the daily correction of spelling papers. The following is a satisfactory method of handling the work in Part One. Let the words be pronounced to the class and written in ink in a spelling blank (costing five cents), no word to be erased or written twice. Let the students exchange books and check the errors as the teacher spells. Let each mark the standing and write his name above the work he has checked. Collect these books and look them over carefully the first two or three days of the term and at irregular times thereafter, perhaps once a month, to get the stand ing. An unchecked error counts against the student who has failed to check it. Once a month each student should make a list of all the words he has misspelled and write them in his spelling blank for special study. Book Synopsis The Merrill Speller (Classic Reprint) by : J. Ormond Wilson
Download or read book The Merrill Speller (Classic Reprint) written by J. Ormond Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Merrill Speller That the child should focus his attention on a very few words at one time; that these words should have a definite meaning and utility to him; and that they should reappear in his writing and in his spelling lessons so that he cannot forget them - these are the main principles on which the merrill speller is built. In the Third Year two words are selected for special study in each lesson, supplemented by four easier words. The number of words in a lesson is increased in the succeeding grades, but the same distinction is kept between the words presenting spelling difficulties and the secondary list of review words or relatively easy words. It is primarily the teacher who must see that the children know the meaning of the word they study and that they use it correctly. In the text-book we can show the meaning of a word by its context in sentences, by grouping it with synonyms or words related in sense, and by directing the pupil to the dictionary. Reviewing, not only throughout the grade but in the spelling lessons of later years, is essential to permanent mastery of diffi cult words. In this Speller the fifth lesson of each week is de voted to a review of the week's work, and a general review is provided four times a year. For further review, the more difficult words are carried from grade to grade for study in the secondary lists. In selecting the vocabulary we have drawn chiefly from lists of words frequently misspelled and words that teachers in many different localities have selected for special drill. Webster's New International Dictionary, revision of 1910, has been used as the spelling authority. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
