Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German Reader, With German Exercises Based Upon the Text for First Reading in German: Selected and Edited With Notes and Vocabulary The opinion is growing yearly that beginners in foreign languages should not be set to reading scraps, but should begin directly upon complete pieces of moderate length and of worthy literary quality. Great numbers of such stories and plays are now accessible in separate editions, but a book like the present Reader has the advantages that it saves the annoyance of several separate purchases, offers a given number of selections at less expense, and that it can present them in a wise gradation. The Exercises following and based upon the text are also carefully graded. (1) The sentences in German with the various inflections to be supplied can be taken up by the time the student has learned the declensions and the simpler verb-forms. (2) The English versions of the original to be turned back into German are more advanced, but yet comparatively easy, because the vocabulary and the constructions are all found in the original German. (3) The German questions leading to an outline of the original in the student's own words call for more ingenuity, but the material for the answers is all in the original German or in the exercises of the second kind. As a rule all these exercises should be prepared by the student at home. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Easy German Stories by : Philip Schuyler Allen
Download or read book Easy German Stories written by Philip Schuyler Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Easy German Stories: Edited With Exercises, Notes, and Vocabulary The following stories were selected and prepared with special reference to the needs of students who have completed the course of elementary German grammar and are making their first efforts in the read ing of connected texts. It is thought better to use for this purpose a few complete stories rather than the short anecdotes and poems that so often go to make up a first reader, thus giving the student from the begin ning a taste for good literature. Five short and com paratively easy tales by representative modern authors have been chosen, each of which illustrates some prominent phase of German prose writing of the nineteenth century. The short biographical Intro duction, written in easy erman, should give the student some outlook into the field of literature which he is now entering. It is hoped that this may tempt him to read further and, at the same time, give him some idea of expressing himself on the subject in German. The notes are intended not only to explain and eluci date the text, but also as a regular part of the earlier work of language teaching. Especially is it hoped that the instructor will find these notes helpful in the build ing up of the student's vocabulary by means of cognates, synonyms, and the etymological inter-relation of word groups within the language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First German Reader: With Questions and Vocabulary To make it available for use almost at the very beginning of the German course, only the present tense has been employed in the first twenty-one selections (with the exception of number eighteen) and difficult constructions have been consistently avoided. Transposed word order is not introduced until the pupil has had ample time to become acquainted with normal and inverted word order. With the exception of the poems, the text is either original, or simplified to meet the needs of the beginner. The questions are intended to aid the pupil in the preparation of his lessons. Teachers may alter or amplify these questions as they see fit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
