Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Geography of Africa Consequently, this Series contains no maps and little variety of type; and I have intentionally avoided mentioning, cg. Exact heights, distances or sizes, small industries, and unimportant places. Wherever any definite comparisons are made, they are intended only for reference, and not to be learnt; and comparisons between the size of African and British cities have been avoided, as the conditions of native life make them only misleading. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Africa, Vol. 1 IN the new issue of this series the single volume formerly thought sufficient for the treatment of African geography is replaced by two, each somewhat larger than that work. Yet the more than doubled space has seemed scarcely adequate to a proper exposition of the facts, both of a geographical and political order, which have accumulated with surprising rapidity since the leading Powers resolved, a few years ago, to transform this continent to a political dependency of Europe. Occurrences of far-reaching consequence have followed-in such swift succession that in the preparation of this work the chief difficulty has been to keep pace with the shifting scenes. In some instances many carefully-prepared pages have had to be greatly modified, and even re-written, owing to the un expected turn taken by events in various parts of the continent. It meets the requirements for Standard III laid down in the new Geography Syllabus of the Transvaal Education De partment; and it will also be found suitable for the work of Standard IV in the Cape Province and Natal. Naturally, there has been no attempt to make the book a complete treatise on the geography of the Union of South Africa, its neighbours and dependencies; but it is hoped that it will be found to cover the ground with sufficient fullness for beginners. I must acknowledge my indebtedness to the Publicity Department of the South African Railways for permission to reproduce some of their beautiful photographs, and especially to Mr. J. Smith, the photographer of that department, for kind advice in making a selection. To friends, 'who have generously supplied me with views for reproduction, I have to express also my warmest thanks; their names are duly mentioned with the illustrations. My thanks, too, are due to the newspapers of this country for much valuable information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In its initial stage - the conquest and development of African lands - we have to deal not so much with political as with geographical conditions. It is only after the latter are under stood that we can effectually control the former. Although not sufficiently competent myself to treat this geographical problem in a manner that might be regarded as authoritative, I have attempted to define the outlines of an inquiry into the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures of Exploration, Vol. 4: Africa The purpose of these Supplementary Readers is to quicken interest in Geography by stories of adventurous travel. They are not intended to serve as a history of exploration, but it is hoped that they will afford an idea of some Of the main steps by which knowledge has been gained, first of the World as a Whole, and then of the separate continents outside Europe. In the present volume an attempt has been made to indicate the pronunciation of difficult names. This cannot be done fully without an elaborate system of diacritical marks, and even then the task bristles with problems. It is hoped, however, that even the limited guidance that can here be given Will be helpful. In the preparation Of the present volume we have been specially indebted to Mr. F. R. Cana. The well-known authority on African history and geography, for much generous assistance. We are grateful also to the Royal Geographical Society for permission to reproduce portraits from the Society's collection; to Mr. Edward Heawood, m.a., the Society's Librarian, for reading the manuscript and placing at our disposal his un rivalled knowledge of geographical literature; and to Mr. A. A. Sainsbury, b.a Headmaster of the Council School at Northwood, for reading the manuscript and giving us the benefit of his advice as a practical teacher. Book excerpt: Survey of Subsaharan Africa: A Regional Geography provides empirical, analytical, and thought-provoking coverage of the different countries, populations, economies, and climates of Subsaharan Africa, a geographic realm that has changed dramatically over the last twenty years. It retains the successful structure of de Blij and Best's classic work, African Survey. Designed to stimulate discussion and debate, Survey of Subsaharan Africa consists of nine systematic chapters that look at central and southern Africa as a whole and twenty-one regional chapters that cover individual countries. The systematic chapters explore broad themes including the geography of human origin, lingual patterns, historical and political geography, urbanization and development, health, the diffusion of AIDS, and agriculture. Both the systematic chapters and the regional chapters weave themes of democracy, human rights, and private enterprise throughout. In addition, Survey of Subsaharan Africa offers rich visual content, with more than 190 illustrations and 160 maps. Featuring a lively writing style that embraces all the diverse theoretical interpretations of geography, Survey of Subsaharan Africa is ideal for advanced undergraduate courses in African Geography or African Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Partition of Africa There is every reason to be satisfied with the reception which the first edition of this work has met with. While one or two German and French papers have charged me with Chauvinism, others declare that my treatment of the enterprises of these countries in Africa has been quite impartial. In revising the present edition I have endeavoured to modify such passages as might be Open to a charge of unfair patriotic bias. This is the case especially with respect to Portugal, for many valuable suggestions with reference to which I am indebted to my friend Mr. J. Batalha Reis. Yet withal, I am afraid it remains evident that I am not indifferent to my country's success in the race with her rivals. Much has taken place in Africa during the two years that have elapsed since the publication of the first edition. This has necessitated extensive revision of several of the later chapters, and an addition of some seventy pages to the work. The book has been care fully revised throughout, and important additions have been made to the maps. I have again to express my indebtedness to the friends mentioned in the preface to the first edition for valuable help in preparing the new edition. My thanks are also due to Count Joachim Pfeil, Mr. F. C. Selous, Mr. H. H. Johnston, c.b., and Mr. Herbert Canning.
