Book excerpt: We consider the solution of nonlinear programs in the case where derivatives of the objective function and nonlinear constraints are unavailable. To solve such problems, we propose an adaptation of a method due to Conn, Gould, Sartenaer, and Toint that proceeds by approximately minimizing a succession of linearly constrained augmented Lagrangians. Our modification is to use a derivative-free generating set direct search algorithm to solve the linearly constrained subproblems. The stopping criterion proposed by Conn, Gould, Sartenaer and Toint for the approximate solution of the subproblems requires explicit knowledge of derivatives. Such information is presumed absent in the generating set search method we employ. Instead, we show that stationarity results for linearly constrained generating set search methods provide a derivative-free stopping criterion, based on a step-length control parameter, that is sufficient to preserve the convergence properties of the original augmented Lagrangian algorithm.

Book excerpt: This authored monograph supplies empirical evidence for the Bayesian brain hypothesis by modeling event-related potentials (ERP) of the human electroencephalogram (EEG) during successive trials in cognitive tasks. The employed observer models are useful to compute probability distributions over observable events and hidden states, depending on which are present in the respective tasks. Bayesian model selection is then used to choose the model which best explains the ERP amplitude fluctuations. Thus, this book constitutes a decisive step towards a better understanding of the neural coding and computing of probabilities following Bayesian rules. The target audience primarily comprises research experts in the field of computational neurosciences, but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students who want to specialize in this field.

Book excerpt: This book includes the best studies on the results of the International Scientific and Practical Conference “New behaviors of market players in the digital economy,” which was held by the Institute of Scientific Communications on July 8, 2021, online, in YouTube format. This book is devoted to the study of digital economy markets from the standpoint of various market players—society (consumers), entrepreneurship, and the state—from the standpoint of various sciences—economic, managerial, social, and legal—which ensures the multidisciplinarity of the book. The uniqueness of the book lies in the application of a new scientific and methodological approach to the study of digital economy markets—simulation modeling. The advantages of a game-based scientific and methodological approach to reducing the uncertainty of economic processes and systems—a combination of quantitative and qualitative analytical methods, a systematic consideration of economic processes and systems from a socio-economic point of view—make it especially suitable for studying digital economy markets. The book identifies the impact of globalization and digitalization on the modern economy and industry markets. The trends and features of the use of advanced technologies in the digital economy markets are studied. The modern practices of business management and business integration in the digital economy are considered. The foundations of economic security and sustainable development of markets and enterprises in the digital economy are revealed. The book is suitable for scientists studying the markets of the digital economy, who will find in it scientific and methodological recommendations and developments on the application of game theory, as well as ready simulation models of the digital economy markets.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An algorithm is described for solving large-scale nonlinear programs whose objective and constraint functions are smooth and continuously differentiable. The algorithm is of the augmented Lagrangian type, involving a sequence of sparse, linearly constrained subproblems whose objective functions include a modified Lagrangian term and a modified penalty function. The algorithm has been implemented in a general purpose Fortran code called MINOS/AUGMENTED. The system is intended for use on problems whose Jacobian matrix is sparse. (Such problems usually include a large set of purely linear constraints.) The bulk of the data may be assembled using a standard linear-programming matrix generator. Function and gradient values for all nonlinear terms are supplied by two user-written subroutines. Some aspects of the implementation are described in detail, and computational results are given for some nontrivial test problems. Assuming convergence occurs, the work involved is comparable to the solution of a moderate number of linear programs of similar size. (Author).
