Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General View of Chinese Civilization: And of the Relations of the West With China In 1859 and 18601 delivered a course of free public lectures on the General History of Humanity. Three of the lectures in that course were devoted to Confucius and Chinese Civilization; and these I now publish. My main object in singling out this particular portion of a vast body of doctrine for separate publication is to bring to the notice of the higher minds and hearts amongst us the need. there is for setting on foot a reasonable and moral policy for regulating the relations of the West with the rest of the World. Those relations are coming more and more under the direction of a commercialism of the baser sort, or of a narrow proselytism, which is often, after all, very little better than a pretext for furthering some political or mercantile object. I am in hopes, also, that this sample of a political conception, based on a thorough philosophic study of the situation which it is desired to modify, will suffice to convince reflecting minds of the necessity of bringing to the study of social phenomena at least the same degree of attention and perseverance as is required for the study of the simpler phenomena of life and of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General View of Chinese Civilization and of the Relations of the West With China But before the group formed by the advanced populations can adopt a proper policy towards the rest of the world, a change must be brought about in its way of looking at itself. When that change does take place, it will have the further effect of producing a wholesome reaction on the internal politics of the West. Book excerpt: As a young man in the 1970s, Y. J. Choi left medical school in Seoul and took a job as a Foreign Service Officer in Paris. Immersed in a Western country for the first time, he was astounded by what he saw. Why were Easterners and Westerners so different in their outlooks? Why did Asia remain undeveloped and poor while the West was rich and developed? Why, in fact, were the civilizations so vastly different at all? If each possessed differing abilities based upon race, then no further questions were necessary-everything could be attributed to biological destiny. But his four-year study of medicine convinced him that people of all races shared the same abilities and potential. He realized then that the differences must therefore derive from the variety of our interactions with our environment, which constitutes the context of our civilization. Gradually, he began to see that in this environmental condition was the primary impetus behind Western civilization. "East and West: Understanding the Rise of China" is an attempt to explain the cultural implications of China's ascendancy-and that of Confucian East Asia in general-by means of a systematic comparison between Eastern and Western world-views.

Book Synopsis China and the West by : Jerome Chʼên
Download or read book China and the West written by Jerome Chʼên and published by Bloomington : Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1979 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This penetrating study of China’s social and cultural contacts with the West, first published in 1979, analyses the early images that China and the West had of one another, and the illusions and misconceptions that arose from these images. The book centres on the question, why did China fail to become modernised through contact with the West before the 1930s? The author examines the roles played by the agents of change – emigrants, missionaries, traders, scholars and diplomats – and the political, economic, social and cultural developments which the transmission of their ideas set in motion. The book also looks at the ways in which change was frustrated by the rulers of the country, the leaders of the imperial government and later the warlords, politicians and followers of Chiang Kai-shek. Through the author's analysis of the complex factors involved, based on extensive original research into private archive material from all over the world, and his study of the influence of centuries of Chinese cultural tradition, China’s slow path to modernisation is explained and illuminated. - Google Books.
