Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General and Critical Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture The works on Scriptural Introduction that we have in English are chiefly of protestant authors, and are inaccurate, filled with partisan hatred of Catholicity, and they have not kept pace with the progress of thought of this last half century. Thereupon, I conceived the design of writing my book, and it is the result of four years' unremitting toil. In this work, my aspirations have been very high. How far the achievement has come short of the aspirations, I leave to be decided by the judgment of the public. I have tried to write justly, not having in mind to advance any cause save the cause of truth. A chief feature of the present work is the arrangement of the traditional data favoring the deuterocanonical books in parallel columns with the scriptural passages therein quoted. This is the result of great labor, but I believe that the enhance ment of the evidential value of such data thus arranged repays such labor. Another feature of the work, which, I hope, will be grate ful to students, is the wide margins of the pages, which render it possible to write thereon things of special importance heard from the teacher. It would fill all my hopes of this present work to know that, in some degree, I had made the message of God more known and more loved. In the preface it was said: "This work is the product of the author's experience as a student of the Bible, and a teacher of theological students in Biblical Study. From time to time, during the past fourteen years, he has been called upon to give special attention to particular themes in public addresses and Review articles. In this way the ground of Biblical Study has been quite well covered. This scattered material has been gathered, and worked over into an organic system." The volume has been issued from the press nine times since that date, and there still seems to be a demand for it on the part of the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Critical Study and Knowledge of the Holy Scriptures Criticism, in the more extensive sense of the term, is the art of forming a correct judgment concerning any object proposed to our consideration. In a more restricted sense, particularly with reference to the works of antient authors, it was fashionable, for a considerable time, among the literati on the continent of Europe, to employ this term as indicating merely that kind of labour and judgment, which was employed in settling the genuineness of the whole or part of the text of any author. But the term is now generally used in a much more enlarged sense, viz. to indicate any kind of labour or judgment, which is occupied either in the literary history of the text itself, or is settling or explaining it. To the former the German philosophers have given the appellation of lower criticism; while the latter has been termed higher criticism, because its objects and results are of a much more important nature. In this latter sense, the term is taken in the present volume, which is devoted to the consideration of the Criticism and Interpretation of the Holy Scriptures. The First Part, which treats on Scripture Criticism, will be found to comprise a concise account of the languages in which the Sacred Volume is written; a sketch of its. literary history, and of the several divisions and subdivisions of it, which have obtained at different times, The nature of various readings, and the means of determining genuine readings, will next be considered, together with the quotations from the Old Testament in the New, and the nature and different kinds of Harmonies of the Old and New Testament. In the Second Part the principles and subsidiary means of Scripture Interpretation are discussed, together with the application of them to the exposition of the Sacred Volume, both exegetical and practical.
