The potato is the third most important global food crop in terms of consumption. Being the only vegetatively propagated species among the world’s main five staple crops creates both issues and opportunities for the potato: on the one hand, this constrains the speed of its geographic expansion and its options for international commercialization and distribution when compared with commodity crops such as maize, wheat or rice. On the other, it provides an effective insulation against speculation and unforeseen spikes in commodity prices, since the potato does not represent a good traded on global markets. These two factors highlight the underappreciated and underrated role of the potato as a dependable nutrition security crop, one that can mitigate turmoil in world food supply and demand and political instability in some developing countries. Increasingly, the global role of the potato has expanded from a profitable crop in developing countries to a crop providing income and nutrition security in developing ones. Growth was compared on T-medium, a basal mineral salts-sucrose medium; or C-medium, which is T-medium with coconut milk (CM), or naphthalenacetic acid (NAA) and calcium pantothenate; or D-medium, which is C-medium with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). In all cases D-medium induced only callus formation and failed to promote roots and stems. Basal T-medium induced plant growth without callus formation but growth of plants, was not as fast or as good as that induced by C-medium. The C-medium induced stem sections, sprouts and seeds to grow directly into plants. Seventy-five per cent of embryos on C-medium grew directly into seedling but the other 25% of embryos formed only callus. However, these callus tissues left long enought on C-medium usually developed leaves and roots. Effects of daylight and temperature were studied, probably for the first time, on growth and tuberization in potato plants that were grown in vitro. Sterile cultures of plants in vitro coming from different sources and variates of potato when incubated for eight hours of light in the 16o, 20o and 24oC greenhouses and for 16 hours in the dark at low night temperature were benefited in growth and tuberization. The low temperature of 16o C stimulated better growth and tuberization than the 20o and 24o C temperatures. The increase in temperature reduced growth and tuberization.
