The bestselling first edition ignited a conversation about how to harness the power of movements for the future growth of the church. In this major update, Hirsch shares significant insights gained along the way, provides fresh new examples of growing churches, and reflects on the last ten years of the missional movement. The new edition has been thoroughly updated and revised throughout and includes charts, diagrams, an expanded glossary of terms, new appendices, an index, a new foreword by Ed Stetzer, and a new afterword by Jeff Vanderstelt. Book Synopsis Ministry with the Forgotten by : Bishop Kenneth L. Carder
Download or read book Ministry with the Forgotten written by Bishop Kenneth L. Carder and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dementia diseases represent a crisis of faith for many family members and congregations. Magnifying this crisis is the way people with dementia tend to be objectified by both medical and religious communities. They are recipients of treatment and projects for mission. Ministry is done to and for them rather than with them. While acknowledging the devastation of dementia diseases, Ken Carder draws on his own experience as a caregiver, hospice chaplain, and pastoral practitioner to portray the gifts as well as the challenges accompanying dementia diseases. He confronts the deep personal and theological questions created by loving people with dementia diseases, demonstrating how living with dementia can be a means of growing in faith, wholeness, and ministry for the entire community of faith. He also reveals that authentic faith transcends intellectual beliefs, verbal affirmations, and prescribed practices. Carder asserts that the Judeo-Christian tradition offers a broader lens, defining personhood in relationship to God’s story and humanity’s participation in God’s mighty acts of creation and new creation; thereby contributing to hope, community, and self-worth. Pastors and congregations will be better equipped to minister with people affected by dementia, receiving their gifts and responding to their unique needs. They will learn how people with dementia contribute to the community and the church’s life and mission, discovering practical ways those contributions can be identified, nurtured, and incorporated into the church’s life and ministry.

Book excerpt: The Economy of Human Life was written and published in the 18th century. Supposedly an ancient text of wisdom and religion from India, found in China and translated for an English Earl. The book was quite popular in the late 18th century and early 19th century, selling through two hundred editions in multiple languages. This work is now one of the most obscure gems of English literature, brilliant, insightful and masterful in delivery. Dr. Trevor Green has updated the original text into modern English, while retaining the meaning and style. He also explores the history of the book, identifies the original author, along with the sources from which the original author used in compiling the wisdom of his day. Those interested in Mysticism, Kabbalah, Religion, Philosophy and Freemasonry will find many curious correlations to the ancient schools profusely intertwined in this curious manuscript. This short work exists as a mine, in which the reader can explore its depths and search for inner treasures hidden along the way. Written so that no matter who approaches the work, everyone may take freely the treasure of his own understanding.

Book Synopsis The Forgotten Men by : Margaret E. Leigey
Download or read book The Forgotten Men written by Margaret E. Leigey and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today there are approximately fifty thousand prisoners in American prisons serving life without parole, having been found guilty of crimes ranging from murder and rape to burglary, carjacking, and drug offences. In The Forgotten Men, criminologist Margaret E. Leigey provides an insightful account of a group of aging inmates imprisoned for at least twenty years, with virtually no chance of release. These men make up one of the most marginalized segments of the contemporary U.S. prison population. Considered too dangerous for rehabilitation, ignored by prison administrators, and overlooked by courts disinclined to review such sentences, these prisoners grow increasingly cut off from family and the outside world. Drawing on in-depth interviews with twenty-five such prisoners, Leigey gives voice to these extremely marginalized inmates and offers a look at how they struggle to cope. She reveals, for instance, that the men believe that permanent incarceration is as inhumane as capital punishment, calling life without parole “the hard death penalty.” Indeed, after serving two decades in prison, some wished that they had received the death penalty instead. Leigey also recounts the ways in which the prisoners attempt to construct meaningful lives inside the bleak environment where they will almost certainly live out their lives. Every state in the union (except Alaska) has the life-without-parole sentencing option, despite its controversial nature and its staggering cost to the taxpayer. The Forgotten Men provides a much-needed analysis of the policies behind life-without-parole sentencing, arguing that such sentences are overused and lead to serious financial and ethical dilemmas.
