Book excerpt: Jules Gabriel Verne was born on 8 February 1828 on Île Feydeau, a small artificial island on the Loire River within the town of Nantes, in No. 4 Rue de Clisson, the house of his maternal grandmother Dame Sophie Allotte de la Fuÿe. His parents were Pierre Verne, an attorney originally from Provins, and Sophie Allote de la Fuÿe, a Nantes woman from a local family of navigators and shipowners, of distant Scottish descent. In 1829, the Verne family moved some hundred meters away to No. 2 Quai Jean-Bart, where Verne's brother Paul was born the same year. Three sisters, Anna, Mathilde, and Marie, would follow (in 1836, 1839, and 1842, respectively).

Book excerpt: "The First Printed Translations" by William James Harris is a bibliography that has been compiled with the view of supplementing existing textbooks on English literary history and assisting students in preparing for examinations in Bibliography and Literature. It will also be of service to those who are working for the professional examinations of the Library Association. The great foreign classics have exercised a direct and decided influence upon English literature and the object of this bibliography is to give in concise form the authors and titles, translations, and dates of the first English translations of the chief foreign authors, and incidentally to enable students to note the effect of such translations on the works of many of our great imaginative writers. Excerpt: "ACHILLES TATIUS. Fourth Century. Greek writer. CLEITOPHON AND LEUCIPPE. Tr. by Rev. R. Smith, 1855. One of the decadent Greek novelists. An erotic novel of a conventional type. ÆLFRIC. c. 1006. THE CATHOLIC HOMILIES. Ed. with tr. B. Thorpe, Ælfric Soc., 1844-46. LIVES OF SAINTS. Ed. Text and Tr. W. W. Skeat, E.E.T.S., 1881. Eminent Saxon prelate, one of the most learned of his time. His works, upwards of eighty in number, have been republished by the Ælfric Soc. (London, 1844-46)."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Secret of the Island was another of the series of Voyages Extraordinaires which ran through a famous Paris magazine for younger readers, the Magasin Illustré. It formed the third and completing part of the Mysterious Island set of tales of adven-ture. We may count it, taken separately, as next to Robinson Cru-soe and possibly Treasure Island, the best read and the best appre-ciated book in all that large group of island-tales and sea-stories to which it belongs. It gained its vogue immediately in France, Great Britain, and overseas besides being translated, with more or less despatch, into other European tongues. M. Jules Verne must indeed have gained enough by it and its two connective tales to have acquired an island of his own. The present book was translated into English by the late W.H.G. Kingston; and is printed in Everyman's Library by special exclusive arrangement with Messrs Sampson Low.. Chapter One. It was now two years and a half since the castaways from the balloon had been thrown on Lincoln Island, and during that period there had been no communication between them and their fellow-creatures. Once the reporter had attempted to communicate with the inhabited world by confiding to a bird a letter which contained the secret of their situation, but that was a chance on which it was impossible to reckon seriously. Ayrton, alone, under the circumstances which have been related, had come to join the little colony. Now, suddenly, on this day, the 17th of October, other men had unexpectedly appeared in sight of the island, on that deserted sea!
