Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Multiple Linear Regression: Applied Generalized Linear Models and Multilevel Models in R is designed for undergraduate students who have successfully completed a multiple linear regression course, helping them develop an expanded modeling toolkit that includes non-normal responses and correlated structure. Even though there is no mathematical prerequisite, the authors still introduce fairly sophisticated topics such as likelihood theory, zero-inflated Poisson, and parametric bootstrapping in an intuitive and applied manner. The case studies and exercises feature real data and real research questions; thus, most of the data in the textbook comes from collaborative research conducted by the authors and their students, or from student projects. Every chapter features a variety of conceptual exercises, guided exercises, and open-ended exercises using real data. After working through this material, students will develop an expanded toolkit and a greater appreciation for the wider world of data and statistical modeling. A solutions manual for all exercises is available to qualified instructors at the book’s website at www.routledge.com, and data sets and Rmd files for all case studies and exercises are available at the authors’ GitHub repo (https://github.com/proback/BeyondMLR)

Balakrishnan and Normal L. Johnson Discover the latest advances in discrete distributions theory The Third Edition of the critically acclaimed Univariate Discrete Distributions provides a self-contained, systematic treatment of the theory, derivation, and application of probability distributions for count data. Generalized zeta-function and q-series distributions have been added and are covered in detail. New families of distributions, including Lagrangian-type distributions, are integrated into this thoroughly revised and updated text. Additional applications of univariate discrete distributions are explored to demonstrate the flexibility of this powerful method. A thorough survey of recent statistical literature draws attention to many new distributions and results for the classical distributions. Approximately 450 new references along with several new sections are introduced to reflect the current literature and knowledge of discrete distributions. Beginning with mathematical, probability, and statistical fundamentals, the authors provide clear coverage of the key topics in the field, including: Families of discrete distributions Binomial distribution Poisson distribution Negative binomial distribution Hypergeometric distributions Logarithmic and Lagrangian distributions Mixture distributions Stopped-sum distributions Matching, occupancy, runs, and q-series distributions Parametric regression models and miscellanea Emphasis continues to be placed on the increasing relevance of Bayesian inference to discrete distribution, especially with regard to the binomial and Poisson distributions. New derivations of discrete distributions via stochastic processes and random walks are introduced without unnecessarily complex discussions of stochastic processes. Throughout the Third Edition, extensive information has been added to reflect the new role of computer-based applications. With its thorough coverage and balanced presentation of theory and application, this is an excellent and essential reference for statisticians and mathematicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years ago, Hans Blihlmann published his famous monograph Mathe matical Methods in Risk Theory in the series Grundlehren der Mathematischen Wis8enschaften and thus established nonlife actuarial mathematics as a recognized subject of probability theory and statistics with a glance towards economics. This book was my guide to the subject when I gave my first course on nonlife actuarial mathematics in Summer 1988, but at the same time I tried to incorporate into my lectures parts of the rapidly growing literature in this area which to a large extent was inspired by Blihlmann's book. The present book is entirely devoted to a single topic of risk theory: Its subject is the development in time of a fixed portfolio of risks. The book thus concentrates on the claim number process and its relatives, the claim arrival process, the aggregate claims process, the risk process, and the reserve process. Particular emphasis is laid on characterizations of various classes of claim number processes, which provide alternative criteria for model selection, and on their relation to the trinity of the binomial, Poisson, and negativebinomial distributions. Special attention is also paid to the mixed Poisson process, which is a useful model in many applications, to the problems of thinning, decomposition, and superposition of risk processe8, which are important with regard to reinsurance, and to the role of martingales, which occur in a natural way in canonical situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enumerative Combinatorics presents elaborate and systematic coverage of the theory of enumeration. The first seven chapters provide the necessary background, including basic counting principles and techniques, elementary enumerative topics, and an extended presentation of generating functions and recurrence relations. The remaining seven chapters focus on more advanced topics, including, Stirling numbers, partitions of integers, partition polynomials, Eulerian numbers and Polya's counting theorem. Extensively classroom tested, this text was designed for introductory- and intermediate-level courses in enumerative combinatorics, but the far-reaching applications of the subject also make the book useful to those in operational research, the physical and social science, and anyone who uses combinatorial methods. Remarks, discussions, tables, and numerous examples support the text, and a wealth of exercises-with hints and answers provided in an appendix--further illustrate the subject's concepts, theorems, and applications.

Book excerpt: A unique approach illustrating discrete distribution theory through combinatorial methods This book provides a unique approach by presenting combinatorial methods in tandem with discrete distribution theory. This method, particular to discreteness, allows readers to gain a deeper understanding of theory by using applications to solve problems. The author makes extensive use of the reduction approach to conditional distributions of independent random occupancy numbers, and provides excellent studies of occupancy and sequential occupancy distributions, convolutions of truncated discrete distributions, and compound and mixture distributions. Combinatorial Methods in Discrete Distributions begins with a brief presentation of set theory followed by basic counting principles. Fundamental principles of combinatorics, finite differences, and discrete probability are included to give readers the necessary foundation to the topics presented in the text. A thorough examination of the field is provided and features: Stirling numbers and generalized factorial coefficients Occupancy and sequential occupancy distributions n-fold convolutions of truncated distributions Compound and mixture distributions Thoroughly worked examples aid readers in understanding complex theory and discovering how theory can be applied to solve practical problems. An appendix with hints and answers to the exercises helps readers work through the more complex sections. Reference notes are provided at the end of each chapter, and an extensive bibliography offers readers a resource for additional information on specialized topics.

Book excerpt: Since 1980, methods for recursive evaluation of aggregate claims distributions have received extensive attention in the actuarial literature. This book gives a unified survey of the theory and is intended to be self-contained to a large extent. As the methodology is applicable also outside the actuarial field, it is presented in a general setting, but actuarial applications are used for motivation. The book is divided into two parts. Part I is devoted to univariate distributions, whereas in Part II, the methodology is extended to multivariate settings. Primarily intended as a monograph, this book can also be used as text for courses on the graduate level. Suggested outlines for such courses are given. The book is of interest for actuaries and statisticians working within the insurance and finance industry, as well as for people in other fields like operations research and reliability theory.

Estimators of parameters in these families using various procedures based on generalized minimum chi-square are obtained, and their asymptotic relative efficiencies are compared. Tests of goodness of fit and of various linear hypotheses are also obtained. Iterative maximum likelihood algorithms for obtaining estimators in some compound power series distributions are also developed. Some results for the fitting of data using classical discrete orthogonal polynomials are also presented, based on generalized minimum Chi-square.

References on the applications of statistics to these problems, or on underlying statistical theory, are found in a great variety of publications, some limited in distribution. This is a collection of such references with abstracts and should be useful in designing new studies of grassland problems. Literature of the world through 1963 was searched; some references were undoubtedly omitted, although not deliberately.

Statisticians and those working in the application areas need to know how to deal with it, and this book provides a complete source for identifying and handling overdispersion. With increasing focus on modelling in the applied sciences, this book is a welcome addition to the modelling literature for researchers and practitioners working in biometrics, medicine, and epidemiology. It is also excellent supplementary reading for a graduate or graduate-level course in statistical modelling.
