Book Synopsis Immigrants against the State by : Kenyon Zimmer
Download or read book Immigrants against the State written by Kenyon Zimmer and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1880s through the 1940s, tens of thousands of first- and second-generation immigrants embraced the anarchist cause after arriving on American shores. Kenyon Zimmer explores why these migrants turned to anarchism, and how their adoption of its ideology shaped their identities, experiences, and actions. Zimmer focuses on Italians and Eastern European Jews in San Francisco, New York City, and Paterson, New Jersey. Tracing the movement's changing fortunes from the pre–World War I era through the Spanish Civil War, Zimmer argues that anarchists, opposed to both American and Old World nationalism, severed all attachments to their nations of origin but also resisted assimilation into their host society. Their radical cosmopolitan outlook and identity instead embraced diversity and extended solidarity across national, ethnic, and racial divides. Though ultimately unable to withstand the onslaught of Americanism and other nationalisms, the anarchist movement nonetheless provided a shining example of a transnational collective identity delinked from the nation-state and racial hierarchies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive study of the Modern School movement, Paul Avrich narrates its history, analyzes its successes and failures, and assesses its place in American life. In doing so, he shows how the radical experimentation in art and communal living as well as in education during this period set the precedent for much of the artistic, social, and educational ferment of the 1960's and I970's. Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of American Humorists by : Steven H. Gale
Download or read book Encyclopedia of American Humorists written by Steven H. Gale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 1324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, this book contains entries on famous American Humorists. Humor has been present in American literature, from the beginning, and has developed characteristics that reflect the American character, both regional and national. Although American literature was, in the past, treated as inferior to British literature, there has always been a large popular audience for the genre, which this book shows. The figures with entries in this encyclopedia not only amuse in their writing, but also aim to enlighten- setting out to expose the foibles and foolishness of society and the individuals who compose it. It is the manner in which these authors try to accomplish this end that determines whether they appear in the volume. Indeed, the book will demonstrate that the best humor has at its base, a ready understanding of human nature.

Book Synopsis Standard Of Conduct and Three Autobiographical Sketches by : Frank Hazard
Download or read book Standard Of Conduct and Three Autobiographical Sketches written by Frank Hazard and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Hazard relentlessly disregards political correctness in Standard of Conduct, a trenchant satire and hilarious comedy that depicts a day in the life of what the author calls an Ivy League dunce. The brisk narrative follows an Ivy League dunce and businessman named Walsh as he proceeds from his New York City apartment in the morning to his office downtown in the financial district to a meeting hours later with another businessman for lunch at a private club and, ultimately, to a prestigious clothing store, where he intends to buy an expensive red silk robe that raffishly allures him. There are shrewd, perceptive vignettes comprising an irresistible panoply of unique characters that include Walsh and his intellectually fastidious secretary, a former ballerina, and her fiancé, a forlorn artist whose career has perilously stalled; a young woman who toils in a real estate office as she indefatigably dreams of becoming a novelist; supercilious diplomats and diffident poets, indignant critics and deceitful lawyers; plutocrats and pedagogues and publishers, and two vainglorious groups called SOMPs and VOBs—delineated with acute, wry humor and keenly incisive wit. Deftly enhanced by vigorous, eloquent, and inventive language as lyrical as music, Standard of Conduct is a hilarious literary satire and superior entertainment as topical as it is timeless.
Download or read book Stephen A. Douglas written by Reg Ankrom and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When newly elected Illinois State Representative Abraham Lincoln first saw 5’4” Stephen A. Douglas, he sized him up as “the least man I ever saw.” With the introduction of Douglas’s first bill in 1834, Lincoln soon thought differently. The General Assembly not only passed the bill, it appointed the 21-year-old Douglas State’s Attorney of Illinois’ largest judicial district, replacing John J. Hardin, one of Lincoln’s most powerful political allies. It was the first of many Douglas-Lincoln contests in the decade ahead. Struggles over banking, internal improvements, party organizations, the seat of government and slavery—even romantic rivalry—put them on opposing sides long before the 1860 presidential election. These battles were Douglas’s political apprenticeship and he would use what he learned to obstruct Lincoln—his friend and nemesis—while becoming the most powerful Democrat in the nation.
