Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Straightforward answers about Roman Catholicism for a Protestant audience The Roman Catholic faith is one of the world's most widespread religious traditions, yet the unique aspects of Roman Catholicism elicit perennial questions from adherents and outsiders alike. Such questions tend to fall into three major categories: historical backgrounds, theological matters, and personal relationships. Using Catholic Church documents and the writings of Catholic scholars, Baptist systematic theologian Gregg R. Allison distills the teachings of Catholicism around forty common questions about Catholic foundations, beliefs, and practices. The accessible question-and-answer format guides readers to the areas of interest, including: Where do Roman Catholic and Protestant beliefs differ? What happens during a Roman Catholic Mass? How does Roman Catholicism understand the biblical teaching about Mary? Who are the saints and what is their role? How can my Roman Catholic loved ones and I talk about the gospel? 40 Questions About Roman Catholicism explores theology and practice, doctrine and liturgy, sacraments and Mariology, contributions and scandals, and many other things, clarifying both real and perceived differences and similarities with other Christian traditions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discussion of the Question, Is the Roman Catholic Religion, in Any or in All Its Principles or Doctrines, Inimical to Civil or Religious Liberty?: And of the Question, Is the Presbyterian Religion in Any or in All Its Principles or Doctrines, Inimical to Civil or Religious Liberty? These delays, though attended with some inconvenience to the Society, have, at least, given the disputants an Opportunity of doing justice to themselves, respectively, in giving their own report of their speeches. The only disagreement be tween them now, is, as to the amount of matter - the one contending, that only one-third of the number of speeches de livered in the oral discussion are produced in their written report - and the other maintaining, that each of the written speeches contains the matter of three, as they were spoken. It is not for us to decide, but to leave, as we do, the gentle men themselves, and the public, to form their own Opinion on this point. This misunderstanding, however, between the disputants, required the action of the Society, which was had in the annexed resolutions. In accordance with instructions from the Society, the Committee have disposed of the work to the present publishers, and we trust that the importance of the questions discussed, will cause it to meet with an exten sive circulation. Book excerpt: Pastoral Care, or The Book of the Pastoral Rule, is a treatise on the responsibilities of the clergy written by Pope Gregory I in which he contrasted the role of bishops as pastors of their flock with their position as nobles of the church: the definitive statement of the nature of the episcopal office. Gregory enjoined parish priests to possess strict personal, intellectual and moral standards which were considered, in certain quarters, to be unrealistic and beyond ordinary capacities. The influence of the book, however, was vast and became one of the most influential works on the topic ever written. It was translated and distributed to every bishop within the Byzantine Empire.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roman Catholic Church Challenged in the Discussion of Thirty-Two Questions With the Catholic Laymen's Association of Georgia To master any subject - whether art, science, music, language, or profession - requires several years' study and close application, and the expenditure of considerable money; for these reasons, few people undertake the task of becoming proficient in more than one. Any one, though, with the time and means, may master several branches, and some do; but it is usually only those who purpose teaching, writing, etc. The average person can, however, by a little application and at a nominal expense secure a sufficient knowledge of the arts and sciences as to understand their main principles, and have the satisfaction of knowing their value to society in general. This is true in regard to the subject of Roman Catholicism; a knowlege of it cannot be acquired in a day, week, month. It has so many phases which affect the spiritual, physical and intellectual world that it is necessary to devote considerable time and money to it to secure even an insight into the system. That this is true is evidenced by the fact that to become a priest twelve years or more must be spent studying the various subjects necessary to qualify one for the priesthood. Many good people have never given this question an hour's consideration, and if their attention is called to any abstract proposition relative thereto, they are apt to say they do not believe it. To inform them that aqua pura in Latin means "pure water" in English, and then hear them say, "I don't believe it!" represents the attitude of those to the papal system who have never given it any attention. It would be a waste of energy and foolish to try to go far enough in the discussion of the Latin tongue to prove to their satisfaction that aqua pura means "pure water" - they would have to devote months to the study of that language before they would believe. I have spent many months in the assiduous study of Romanism; have closely read thousands of pages of literature, from non-Catholic and approved Catholic sources, yet I must confess there is more to learn. But what I have gleaned, I have endeavored to so present it in these pages as will give a clear and concise understanding of its main features, treating of certain fundamental principles of the system that should be considered seriously by every one who enjoys the blessings of Liberty provided by the Constitution of the United States, and is a compendium of reliable information that every person should possess, which cannot be secured otherwise than by following the course pursued by me. I believe the reader will be convinced that the Roman Catholic Church is a deadly foe to the Constitution of this country, and every human right and liberty guaranteed by it. Here it is - the first new Catechism of the Catholic Church in more than 400 years, a complete summary of what Catholics around the world commonly believe. The Catechism draws on the Bible, the Mass, the Sacraments, Church tradition and teaching, and the lives of saints. It comes with a complete index, footnotes and cross-references for a fuller understanding of every subject. The word catechism means "instruction" - this book will serve as the standard for all future catechisms. Using the tradition of explaining what the Church believes (the Creed), what she celebrates (the Sacraments), what she lives (the Commandments), and what she prays (the Lord's Prayer), the Catechism of the Catholic Church offers challenges for believers and answers for all those interested in learning about the mystery of the Catholic faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a positive, coherent and contemporary map for our spiritual journey toward transformation.

Romero to share some of the scriptural and historical "evidence" that the contemporary Roman Catholic Church and the Apostolic Church founded by Jesus Christ circa 30 A. D. are one and the same. Using some of the commonly-heard misconceptions about the Catholic Faith as points of departure, Fr. Romero examines various key passages from Scripture, looks at historical documentation found in secular sources and, at the end of each chapter, presents quotes from the writings of the first generations of Christians to show that modern-day Catholic beliefs and practices have solid precedence in the beliefs and practices of the early Church.
