Download or read book A Discussion of the Geomagnetic Indices Kp and Ap, 1932 to 1971 written by Allan L. Cage and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty years (1 January 1932 to 31 December 1971) of geomagnetic data in terms of the indices Kp and ap were examined. The frequency distributions of these indices and their semiannual and diurnal variations are tabulated and discussed. Frequency tables were generated based on the present value of the index and the succeeding value of the index. These tables clearly demonstrate the persistent nature of Kp and ap. The use of these data as an aid in geomagnetic forecasting is also discussed. (Author).

Book Synopsis Conditional Probabilities of the Geomagnetic Index Ap by : Philip M. Pazich
Download or read book Conditional Probabilities of the Geomagnetic Index Ap written by Philip M. Pazich and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data of the geomagnetic index A sub p from 1932 to 1973 were used to determine the conditional probabilities for the occurrence of certain values of that index. The range of values was divided into three categories that approximately correspond to quiet, moderate, and disturbed levels of geomagnetic activity. Conditions applied were the category level of activity on the initial and subsequent day and the portion of the solar sunspot cycle. Conditional probabilities were determined for 100 successive days after the initial day, both for the quiet and active portions of the sunspot cycle. (Author).

Book Synopsis Variability of the Lower Thermosphere Determined from Satellite Accelerometer Data by : Frank A. Marcos
Download or read book Variability of the Lower Thermosphere Determined from Satellite Accelerometer Data written by Frank A. Marcos and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive atmospheric density data base has been developed using accelerometer results from four low altitude satellites. The altitude range of the data is from 250 km down to as low as 140 km, with latitude coverage from 90 N to 90 S and local time periods that cover several 24-hr cycles. The data were obtained over a wide range of geomagnetic activity conditions. Solar radiation, as indicated by the 10.7-cm flux, was generally very low. Hence the data base applies mainly to solar minimum conditions. A description of the satellites, the accelerometer experiment, and the data base is given. Density variability is statistically analyzed in relation to selected atmospheric models. Particular attention is given to deviations from a normal distribution. Frequency distribitons of the data are described in terms of the mean value and the second, third, and fourth moments about the mean. This provides a more accurate description of extreme variations. The statistical properties of atmospheric variability are analyzed as a function of geomagnetic activity, latitude, altitude, and local time to develop a quantitative knowledge of unmodeled density variations. The results show that these accelerometer data will permit significant improvement in understanding the variations in the lower thermospheric density.
Book Synopsis The Sun from Space by : Kenneth R. Lang
Download or read book The Sun from Space written by Kenneth R. Lang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-20 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Edition of The Sun from Space, completed in 1999, focused on the early accomplishments of three solar spacecraft, SOHO, Ulysses, and Yohkoh, primarily during a minimum in the Sun’s 11-year cycle of magnetic activity. The comp- hensive Second Edition includes the main ndings of these three spacecraft over an entire activity cycle, including two minima and a maximum, and discusses the signi cant results of six more solar missions. Four of these, the Hinode, RHESSI, STEREO, and TRACE missions were launched after the First Edition was either nished or nearly so, and the other two, the ACE and Wind spacecraft, extend our investigations from the Sun to its varying input to the Earth. The Second Edition does not contain simple updates or cosmetic patch ups to the material in the First Edition. It instead contains the relevant discoveries of the past decade, integrated into chapters completely rewritten for the purpose. This provides a fresh perspective to the major topics of solar enquiry, written in an enjoyable, easily understood text accessible to all readers, from the interested layperson to the student or professional.

This book was released on 1971 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ionospheric propagation of high-frequency radio waves is profoundly influenced by the variations of sunspot numbers and of geomagnetic activity. Thus, details of these variations, and of the relationship between them, has practical application. The variation of the geomagnetic activity index Ap over the 38-year interval January, 1932 through January, 1970 differs in several important characteristics from the variation of sunspot numbers over the same interval. A spectral analysis approach was used d to investigate this variation of AP, as well as its relation to the variation of sunspot numbers. The data analyzedconsisted of the 457 monthly average AP indices (AP) for the interval and the corresponding observed monthly sunspot numbers. Several large samples of the original daily Ap indices were also analyzed. Two of the latter samples covered 11-year intervals (April 1, 1944 - June 2, 1955; and June 1, 1956 - July 31, 1967) and the third covered a 23-year interval (April 1, 1944 - December, 1967).
