Book Synopsis Essays on the Modern Japanese Church by : Aizan Yamaji
Download or read book Essays on the Modern Japanese Church written by Aizan Yamaji and published by U of M Center For Japanese Studies. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on the Modern Japanese Church (Gendai Nihon kyokai shiron), published in 1906, was the first Japanese-language history of Christianity in Meiji Japan. Yamaji Aizan’s firsthand account describes the reintroduction of Christianity to Japan—its development, rapid expansion, and decline—and its place in the social, political, and intellectual life of the Meiji period. Yamaji’s overall argument is that Christianity played a crucial role in shaping the growth and development of modern Japan. Yamaji was a strong opponent of the government-sponsored “emperor-system ideology,” and through his historical writing he tried to show how Japan had a tradition of tolerance and openness at a time when government-sponsored intellectuals were arguing for greater conformity and submissiveness to the state on the basis of Japanese “national character.” Essays is important not only in terms of religious history but also because it highlights broad trends in the history of Meiji Japan. Introductory chapters explore the significance of the work in terms of the life and thought of its author and its influence on subsequent interpretations of Meiji Christianity.
Book Synopsis Japan and Christianity by : John Breen
Download or read book Japan and Christianity written by John Breen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written of the 'success' of the early missions to Japan during the decades immediately following the arrival of the first Jesuits in 1549. The subsequent 'failure' of the faith to put down roots strong enough to survive this initial wave of enthusiasm is discussed with equal alacrity. The papers in this volume, born of a Conference marking the centenary of the Japan Society of London, represent an attempt to reassess the contact between Christianity and Japan in terms of a symbiotic relationship, a dialogue in which the impact of Japan on the imported religion is viewed alongside the more frequently cited influence of Christianity on Japanese society. Here is a dynamic cultural encounter, examined by the papers in this volume from a series of political, literary and historical perspectives.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of English Phrases, With Illustrative Sentences: To Which Are Added Some English Proverbs, and a Selection of Chinese Proverbs and Maxims; A Few Quotations, Words, and Phrases, From the Latin and French Languages These phrases are not the production Of a single writer, or Of a whole school of writers. They are the product of the English-speaking race, and have been coined by the genius of the people. They have been formed to express new relations or new ideas; and this has been done with the existing vocabulary and sometimes with existing phrases, by stamping a new meaning on them, to make them meet the new necessity. As new relations have arisen, and new thoughts have come into being, the necessity has led somebody, sometimes the learned man, sometimes the unlearned, to give expression to these new requirements, not by originating new words, but by taking the words at hand, and so combining them as to make them express the new idea. And as a result we have a set Of expres sions which show the imagination and the native power Of the mind, reveal the character of the people, and give the language its peculiar force and beauty. Neither are they the product of any one time or period. Naturally many date back to the early periods of the growth of the language, because these early peri ods are the creative periods in the history of a people. But the process of form ing these phrases is continually going on, in proportion to the formation of new ideas, or the occurrence of new relations. Most of these phrases are figurative. They express a thought or an act by words which, taken in their literal sense, denote some physical action. Or they sometimes express one physical action by a word or phrase which, in the primary meaning, signifies another physical action. In both of these cases, the language of the idio matic phrase is pictorial. It represents one thing by the picture or image of another. This may be illustrated by one or two phrases. The meaning of the idiomatic (xviii) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Christian Converts and Social Protests in Meiji Japan by : Irwin Scheiner
Download or read book Christian Converts and Social Protests in Meiji Japan written by Irwin Scheiner and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowhere has there been a discussion of the confusion necessarily generated by the rapidity of the change or of the agony created in the lives of many whose attitudes, expectations, and even success depended on the continuance of now abolished institutions. Historians have ignored the settled conditions of most samurai and instead concentrated on the study of the minority of activist samurai leaders who, with the backing of only a few Han (feudal domains) sought to overthrow the old order and whose success in doing so has made the study of the modernization of Japan the prime concern of historians. The history of the Meiji period may have been an overall political and industrial success story, but for a fuller understanding of the conditions of that success it is also necessary to understand "what it was really like" for the members of the old elite to be estranged from the proponents of revolution and what many members did to assure their own social and psychological position in a world they had not expected. In this book the author attempts to show that the impact of the Meiji Restoration destroyed the meaningfulness of the Confucian doctrine for these declasse samurai. Through Christianity, the samurai attempted to revive their status in society by finding a doctrine that offered a meaningful path to power. But in doing so, they had to accept a new theory of social relations. Ultimately, as the convert's understanding of society became totally informed by the Christian doctrine, they accepted a transcendent authority that brought them into conflict with society about them. Therefore, to understand the development of a Christian opposition in Meiji society we must begin with the conversion experience itself. [intro]
Book Synopsis Politics and Transcendent Wisdom by : Charles D. Orzech
Download or read book Politics and Transcendent Wisdom written by Charles D. Orzech and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics and Transcendent Wisdom presents a systematic theoretical framework for understanding the relationship between politics and religion in a variety of contexts. This book examines the formation of &"national protection&" Buddhism in China and translates the key text of this important movement. Showing that Buddhist notions of sovereignty were meant and were taken as more than mere metaphor, Orzech examines the profound link between Buddhist notions of transcendence and the deployment of political authority in East Asia. To this integration of philosophical tradition and political history is brought a new understanding of Buddhist cosmology. The contexts of Buddhism as state religion in fifth- and eighth-century China are examined in detail, through extended consideration of the Transcendent Wisdom Scripture for Humane Kings Who Wish to Protect Their States, the text that was the charter for Buddhist state cults in China, Korea, and Japan into the twentieth century. The text first appeared during the fifth century as Buddhists were struggling to understand how their &"foreign&" religion and the &"foreign&" rulers of north China might be adapted to Chinese religious and political culture. The Scripture for Humane Kings and the rites enjoined by it were one answer to these questions. Three centuries later, in the context of a fully sinified Buddhism, the T'ang dynasty Tantric master Pu-k'ung produced a new version of the text with new rites that served as the centerpiece of his vision of a Chinese Buddhist state modeled on esoteric lines. The final section of this volume presents for the first time a full, annotated translation of this important East Asian Buddhist text.
