Book excerpt: First Day of Class is the first book in the series "(Barely) Surviving Nursing School." This hilarious and at times emotional series looks at some of the challenges of being a nursing student. The books are intentionally-concise because nursing students don't have a lot of time, and they should be able to enjoy something other than 900-page textbooks. Meet Milan, she has just gotten accepted into the nursing program at East Conley University. She is excited to embark on this new adventure and happy that she can make her mother proud. But little did she know that this was going to be one of the hardest things she was ever going to have to do in her life. From being a self-proclaimed diva to changing bedpans, Milan must learn how to cope with the challenges of nursing school. Janelle is a carefree soul, still living at home with her parents. She was ready for the ultimate college experience, hanging out, partying, and basically having fun. She soon learns that being a nursing student means staying focused on everything nursing with very little time left for anything else. Anna is thirty-one and settled with a supportive husband and a bubbly little girl. To make it through nursing school she is going to have to learn how to juggle her home, school, and love life. Her life soon turns into one big balancing act, with herself as the puppet in the middle. And finally, meet Toya, a serious young woman with a troubled past. She doesn't make friends easily and she likes her private space. She soon realizes that in order to keep her sanity and make it through nursing school she needed friends that she can count on. Through narrative writing and first-person perspectives, Sekkori tells the story of "four unsuspecting young women" and their experiences in the nursing program. Sekkori is a registered nurse by day and a writer and blogger by night. She has over fourteen years of experience as a critical care, trauma care, and post-anesthesia care nurse. She still remembers her first day of nursing school and the anxiety and "fear of the unknown" feelings she had. Her goal is to give a realistic perspective of nursing school from someone who has been there.

Taking us from birth to death and from A&E to the mortuary, The Language of Kindness is an astounding account of a profession defined by acts of care, compassion and kindness. We watch Christie as she nurses a premature baby who has miraculously made it through the night, we stand by her side during her patient's agonising heart-lung transplant, and we hold our breath as she washes the hair of a child fatally injured in a fire, attempting to remove the toxic smell of smoke before the grieving family arrive. In our most extreme moments, when life is lived most intensely, Christie is with us. She is a guide, mentor and friend. And in these dark days of division and isolationism, she encourages us all to stretch out a hand. Book excerpt: The team of nurses that Tilda Shalof found herself working with in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a big-city hospital was known as “Laura’s Line.” They were a bit wild: smart, funny, disrespectful of authority, but also caring and incredibly committed to their jobs. Laura set the tone with her quick remarks. Frances, from Newfoundland, was famous for her improvised recipes. Justine, the union rep, wore t-shirts emblazoned with defiant slogans, like “Nurses Care But It’s Not in the Budget.” Shalof was the one who had been to university. The others accused her of being “sooo sensitive.” They depended upon one another. Working in the ICU was both emotionally grueling and physically exhausting. Many patients, quite simply, were dying, and the staff strove mightily to prolong their lives. With their skill, dedication, and the resources of modern science, they sometimes were almost too successful. Doctors and nurses alike wondered if what they did for terminally-ill patients was not, in some cases, too extreme. A number of patients were admitted when it was too late even for heroic measures. A boy struck down by a cerebral aneurysm in the middle of a little-league hockey game. A woman rescued – too late – from a burning house. It all took its toll on the staff. And yet, on good days, they thrived on what they did. Shalof describes a colleague who is managing a “crashing” patient: “I looked at her. Nicky was flushed with excitement. She was doing five different things at the same time, planning ahead for another five. She was totally focused, in her element, in control, completely at home with the chaos. There was a huge smile on her face. Nurses like to fix things. If they can.” Shalof, a veteran ICU nurse, reveals what it is really like to work behind the closed hospital curtains. The drama, the sardonic humour, the grinding workload, the cheerful camaraderie, the big issues and the small, all are brought vividly to life in this remarkable book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When John Blakeman decided to become a registered nurse, he had no idea how much he would learn about himself, about patients, and about life. A valuable lesson he learned in nursing school was that every patient tells a story. Some stories are told verbally; some stories are told non-verbally; and other stories are only recognized after critical reflection. Join Blakeman as he explores his time in nursing school, reflecting on the lessons he learned from patients and also recounting his triumphs and tragedies. From trying to convince a patient that salt is not approved by the FDA as a pain reliever to holding the hand of a patient in her last days of life, the stories are real, and the lessons are significant. Indeed, nursing students encounter unique circumstances that can be challenging on a daily basis, and this book is a glimpse into some of those situations. Whether you are a student nurse, nurse educator, or have no connection to nursing at all, you will take away valuable lessons from this book. PRAISE FOR LEARNING FROM PATIENTS: Blakeman's Learning from Patients "depicts the evolution that takes place within an aspiring nurse during his journey in nursing education through his self-assessment and reflection. He shares moments that are insightful for both nursing students and faculty." -- Dr. Gloria Brummer, DNP, RN, CNE, CEN "There is no doubt that the nursing profession is as challenging as it is rewarding. Generally, the initial realization of this fact comes in nursing school. As a former nursing student, this book touches my heart and brings back all the memories of my own challenges and triumphs in nursing school. As a nursing educator, one of the most rewarding aspects of my career is watching the personal and professional growth of nursing students throughout their education. Nurses, nurse educators, nursing students, and anyone interested in the nursing profession will be able to relate to the emotions and experiences evoked from reading John's personal accounts of his journey toward becoming a professional nurse. For anyone considering a career in nursing, this book is an open and honest account of the big challenges and even bigger rewards you are facing. For practicing nurses, let this book take you back and remind you of the accomplishments you've achieved in your own journey and reaffirm that you make a difference." -- Lizabeth Hernandez, MSN, RN
