Unfortunately there has been so much cholera lately at the Mauritius, that the authorities at Bourbon take the precaution of giving twenty-one days' quarantine to every vessel from that port, no matter how clean its "bill of health;" this, of course, precludes our anchoring. Having a mail for the island, we dash the contents of a bottle of vinegar over the parcel, throw it to the quarantine boat, and steam a-head. The island of Bourbon seems to consist largely of a range of rather high hills, the north-eastern slope of which is so beautifully gradual, that almost to the summit the plough is used to advantage. Apparently there is scarcely an acre of ground uncultivated, it is all of the richest green, and seems to have an advantage over Mauritius. The situation of the cultivated land, the healthiness of the climate, and the freedom from "ticks" and other noxious insects, so hurtful to cattle and horses, are all in favour of Bourbon; but it can never be made a great commercial place. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how slave traders interacted with and resisted the British suppression campaign in the nineteenth-century western Indian Ocean. By focusing on the transporters, buyers, sellers, and users of slaves in the region, the book traces the many links between slave trafficking and other types of trade. Drawing upon first-person slave accounts, travelogues, and archival sources, it documents the impact of abolition on Zanzibar politics, Indian merchants, East African coastal urban societies, and the entirety of maritime trade in the region. Ultimately, this ground-breaking work uncovers how western Indian Ocean societies experienced the slave trade suppression campaign as a political intervention, with important implications for Indian Ocean history and the history of the slave trade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1986. Slavery in Islamic Africa has been a fascinating subject to which many scholars have referred, but of which no detailed monograph has emerged. The better part of the essays in these volumes has its ancestry in a conference held at Princeton University during the Summer of 1977 under the title: “Islamic Africa: Slavery and Related Institutions”. At that international gathering, four principal themes dominated discussion: the servile estate, its genesis and composition; the master-slave connection and the post-servile condition; patterns and perspectives of slave trading; the legacy of Islamic slavery in Africa to contemporary societies.
