Book Synopsis A Crossbreeding Experiment with Dairy Cattle by : Milton Henry Fohrman
Download or read book A Crossbreeding Experiment with Dairy Cattle written by Milton Henry Fohrman and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1939, when the Bureau of Dairy Industry began its crossbreeding experiment at Beltsville, the published information on the crossbreeding of dairy cattle was slight, unimpressive, and very little of it was based on experimental results. The crossbreeding investigations at Beltsville were undertaken to develop knowledge on the subject which would provide a sound basis for advising the operators of milk-producing farms what to expect if they used crossbreeding in hopes of producing better replacements for their milking herds. Final results on any dairy cattle breeding research project cannot be published until the last animal on the project has died, so this report covers the breeding performance and milk and butterfat production on all individuals used on the project which have had time to complete a normal first-lactation period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents valuable information on the performance of cross-breds and indigenous cattle with respect to reproduction, production, disease susceptibility and draught utility aspects under tropical field conditions. It discusses empirical evidences of various factors that are responsible for influencing the performance of dairy cattle under different farming systems locations. It also provides an insight into the services undertaken by the cattle developmental agencies, field level constraints experienced by them and farmers with respect to dairy farming. In view of the significance attached to the cross-breeding programme in the tropical countries like India, the book provides an insightful understanding about the multivarious factors associated with dairy farming under tropical conditions involving different farming systems located under varied agro-ecological conditions.

This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genetic Research With Experimental Dairy Cattle at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center Although crossbreeding was an integral part of the project, estimating the degree of heterosis in various aspects of performance was not an objective. Hence, only a base herd of Holstein females constituted the foundation cows of the project. The herd was randomly divided into three units - one for out cross matings, one for a mild inbreeding program, and one for crossbreeding. The mild inbreeding phase was carried out by making pedigree selection of young bulls born within the mild inbreeding line itself and loaning them to AI units, State and Federal institutional herds, and private dairymen. Progeny test information thus obtained was the basis for selecting the bulls that were used to propagate the mild inbreeding line. Book Synopsis Breeding for robustness in cattle by : Marija Klopcic
Download or read book Breeding for robustness in cattle written by Marija Klopcic and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has revealed unfavourable trends in e.g. fertility, udder health and locomotion in some major dairy cattle breeds due to a large increase in production and insufficient consideration of functional traits in the breeding goals. Such unfavourable trends in some functional traits increase costs. Additionally, the enlargement of herds leads to less available labour time per individual cow. This asks for cows that are easy to handle. At the same time, society is demanding a higher welfare standard of animals. These contradicting developments have increased the desire for so called more robust animals. Robustness can be defined as 'the ability to maintain homeostasis in commonly accepted and sustainable herds of the near future'; or 'the ability of the cow to function well in the environment she lives in as well as in a wide range of climates and production systems'. This book contains a series of articles (26) dealing with the concept of robustness, including aspects like evolution, genetics, environment, animal health and welfare, and integrity. Besides the major functional traits also the links to energy balance, hot climatic conditions, and the attitude and input of stakeholders towards robustness as part of the breeding program are discussed. This book is the first attempt to summarise the available knowledge concerning this topic in cattle, making this book unique. The contributions are from authors of 16 countries from all over the world. However, the focus is presently on farm animal level, while in future robustness of the whole production system may also require additional attention.
