Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging the commonplace that suspends migrants between two worlds', this study turns a refreshingly curious eye to complex cultural relations and literary novelties wrought by Turkish migration to Germany. At interpretive and historic crossroads involving dialogue and storytelling, genocide and taboo, and capital and labour in the 1990s. This book illuminates far-reaching imaginative effects that literatures of migration can engender. In critical conversation with Arjun Appadurai, Seyla Benhabib, Homi Bhabha, Rey Chow, Andreas Huyssen, Dominick LaCapra, Doris Sommer, and many others, Adelson probes history and aesthetics as surprisingly twinned indices of national and global transformation at the millennial turn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of German film dealing with individual films as works of art has long been needed. Existing histories tend to treat cinema as an economic rather than an aesthetic phenomenon; earlier surveys that do engage with individual films do not include films of recent decades. This book treats representative films from the beginnings of German film to the present. Providing historical context through an introduction and interchapters preceding the treatments of each era's films, the volume is suitable for semester- or year-long survey courses and for anyone with an interest in German cinema. The films: The Student of Prague - The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - The Last Laugh - Metropolis - The Blue Angel - M - Triumph of the Will - The Great Love - The Murderers Are among Us - Sun Seekers - Trace of Stones - The Legend of Paul and Paula - Solo Sunny - The Bridge - Young T rless - Aguirre, The Wrath of God - Germany in Autumn - The Marriage of Maria Braun - The Tin Drum - Marianne and Juliane - Wings of Desire - Maybe, Maybe Not - Rossini - Run Lola Run - Good Bye Lenin - Head On - The Lives of Others Stephen Brockmann is Professor of German at Carnegie Mellon University and past President of the German Studies Assocation.

Download or read book Outlines of German Literature (Classic Reprint) written by Joseph Gostwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of German Literature It may be asked, why have we not translated one of the best of many German books on the History of German Literature The reply is, that, in some instances, they are too extensive; in others they are rather critical than narrative or descriptive, and are designed for readers who already have some considerable knowledge of the subject. The work now offered to English readers is moderately com pendions, and while many critical remarks may be found its pages, its general character is descriptive. As far as is possible, writers of various schools and of several periods are here allowed to speak for themselves. In several of the quotations given, the form of abridged translation is used, in order to gain more breadth of outline. With the exception of two or three stanzas (from hymns noticed in Chapter XL), no translations, either in prose or verse, have been borrowed. The translations from minor poets, which may seem numerous, are intended to give a fair representa tion of German poets of the second class - writers whose genius is truly poetic, though not comprehensive, and who have especially excelled in their lyrical ballads. It is not long since a notion prevailed, that a review of poetical literature, with a few brief notices of history and biography, might be accepted as the history of a national literature. But theology and philosophy are, though not immediately yet closely, united with general culture, and we have, therefore, made no attempt to evade the difficulty attending the treatment of these subjects.
